Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Juglandis Semen Herbal Acupuncture Therapy on Chronic Shoulder Pain. Methods : Clinical studies on shoulder pain were carried out on 34 patients who were treated at Department of Acupuncture & Moxibusition, Samse Oriental Hospital from June 1, 2009 to October 15, 2009. Subjects were divided into two groups: Experimental group(Group A, n=17) and Control group(Group B, n=17). Group A were treated by common acupuncture therapy, cupping therapy and Juglandis Semen Pharmacopuncture Therapy and Group B were treated by common acupuncture therapy & cupping therapy. All patients in both groups were treated three times a week over 3 weeks. For evaluating change of pain, we used Shoulder Pain and Disability Index(SPADI), Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Degree of feeling inconvenient in everyday life and Degree of subjective symptoms of shoulder pain. Evaluations were made at baseline and after one week, two weeks and three weeks of treatment. Results : Both group showed chronic shoulder pain decrease after 3 weeks of treatment. But Group A showed better effect on decreasing SPADI, VAS, Degree of feeling inconvenient in everyday life and Degree of subjective symptoms of chronic shoulder pain than Group B. Conclusions : According to the above-mentioned results, it seems that Juglandis Semen Pharmacopuncture Therapy could be applied as the effective method for reducing shoulder pain.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the effectiveness of fire needling treatment for knee osteoarthritis in comparison with manual acupuncture treatment. Methods : Through four foreign online databases (PubMed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, and CNKI) and five domestic online databases (NDSL, RISS, KISS, OASIS, and KTKP), we searched for clinical studies that performed fire needling treatment for knee osteoarthritis until May 10, 2019. Only randomized controlled trials were selected and we assessed the risk of bias according to the Cochrane RoB criteria. This review examined the selected studies into first author, publication year, sample size, outcome measurements, results, acupoints, treatment time & period and so on. Results : A total of 7 RCTs were selected in this review and all were conducted in China. Treatment period of more than 4 weeks and treatment visits of 10 to 20 times were the most common. EX-LE4 and ST35 (=EX-LE5) acupoints were most frequently selected in treatment. Among the evaluation indexes, a total efficacy rate was used the most. Most of fire needling groups showed more significant results compared with the manual acupuncture groups statistically. Conclusions : All studies showed that fire needling treatments for knee osteoarthritis were more effective than manual acupuncture treatments statistically. Therefore, the results of this study could be utilized as a preliminary data for another clinical research on fire needling treatment for knee osteoarthritis. However, further well-designed randomized controlled trials will be needed to develop sufficient evidence about the effectiveness and safety of fire needling treatment for knee osteoarthritis in the future.
Chronic prostatitis/Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common disorder to men that involved urinary symptoms and sexual activity-related discomfort. As a pathophysiology of the diseases has not been established, CP/CPPS is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms, principally pain or discomfort in the pelvic region. The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of Korean medicine, Sibimijihwang-tang(十二味地黃湯), bee venom pharmacopuncture, and acupuncture treatment on 6 cases of CP/CPPS. 6 patients were treated with Korean medicine, Sibimijihwang-tang and acupuncture and bee venom pharmacopuncture was given into Hoeeum(CV1) et al. National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) was used to assess treatment effect. After treatment, NIH-CPSI decreased significantly all the patients. Sibimijihwang-tang, bee venom pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment was shown fairly effective to CP/CPPS.
Objective : In 1983 Autosomal dominent spinocerebellar ataxia(ADCA) has been classified to four types by a useful clinical features according to Harding. Since 1993 ADCA referred to as SCA by molecular genetic characteristics. We focused on the improvement of clinical symptoms in SCA patient through oriental medical treatment. Methods & Results : The assessment included neurophysiological examination and clinical symptoms. For example slow saccade, gaze limitation, upward and lateral, nystagmus, truncal and gait ataxia. The patient(M/30) was clinically charaterized by ocular abnormalities, trunkal and gait ataxia and the MRI showed atrophy of cerebellar vermis. The patient was taken both common acupuncture and Dong-Si venepuncture on Hwasan with herbal medicine. Before the treatment Rt. ocular movement were slowed and a significant eye fixation was observed always in abduction and intermittently presented trunkal and gait ataxia. During the treatment trunkal and gait ataxia has not been presented and ocular obnomalities changed to normal state. This case suggests the possibility of oriental medical treatment on SCA but further observation is needed on this patient.
Objective : There are little report on treatment of Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis(DISH) in Traditional Korean Medicine. We suggest to treat DISH with a Korean Bee-Vonom Therapy and would like to suggest treatment plan for the further treatments. Methods : Under the assumption that Korean Bee-Venom Therapy may be affective for treatment DISH, the following points were administreted :Hua-Tuo-Jia-Ji-Xue Results : After 14 weeks of treatment-especailly Korean Bee-Venom Therapy, a remarkable improvement was made for DISH. Conclusion : Significant improvement in DISH was obtained with through Korean Bee-venom Therapy, Four needle technique, Common Acupucture Treatment and Herbal medication. Although this case yielded favorable result, more study should be made to prove the effectiveness of Korean Bee-Venom Therapy for treating DISH.

Trigger finger is a common cause of hand disability that results in finger catching, clicking, or locking. Conventional treatment options such as medication, injection, and surgery have limitations. Studies have indicated that acupuncture and acupotomy can be effective in treating trigger finger. However, no review regarding these treatment modalities has been published yet. This review included randomized controlled trials published until January 2023, investigating acupuncture-related interventions. The primary outcomes of interest included the effectiveness rate (ER) and pain intensity, measured using a visual analog scale (VAS) and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and secondary outcomes were the Quinnell grade (QG) and recurrence rate (RR). Adverse events (AEs) have also been reported wherever available. Overall, 19 studies were included, and results demonstrated that arcedge acupuncture improved the ER and QG and reduced NRS, and acupuncture was effective in reducing VAS. Compared with conventional surgery, acupotomy alone improved the ER and QG and lowered VAS and RR, with relatively fewer AEs. Acupotomy add-on treatment was more effective than conventional treatment; however, careful interpretation is needed for VAS. Acupotomy add-on treatment was more effective than acupotomy alone. However, the overall results must be interpreted with caution because of study quality, small sample size, and heterogeneity of the results.
Objectives : The aim of this study is comparing the improvement of Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt syndrome according to treatment duration. Methods : The 11cases diagnosed as Ramsay hunt syndrome and 30cases of Bell's palsy who visited Cheong-ju Oriental Medical hospital from February 2006 to June 2008 were evaluated. We used Yanagihara's unweighted Grading System to confirm the improvement. Results : In the analysis of cause, except the "none", the most common cause was "Overwork" in both two group. After 5-day treatment the score was getting worse but after 10-day treatment score was improved in both group. The improvement of Bell's palsy group was better than that of Ramsay hunt syndrome group after 5-day and 10-day treatment, but there was no significance. Conclusions : In comparison of Yanagihara's unweighted grading score checked before treatment, after 5-day, 10-day and 15-day treatment between Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt sundrome, there was no statistical significant difference.
Objectives : Dyspnea is one of the most common symptoms that we meet, but so far there has been no research about the effects of acupuncture therapy on it. This study was performed in order to evaluate the effect of acupuncture therapy on dyspnea by means of using objective indexes. Methods : The effect of acupuncture therapy was assessed by analyzing the pulmonary function test (PFT) in 10 patients, who had suffered from dyspnea and had pain at the acupuncture point Tian-zong (SI11) when it was compressed by a finger, at our outpatient department. Each patient was treated with acupuncture therapy at both sides of Tian-zong. We compared the results of pre-treatment and post-treatment PFTs, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1.0), and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Results : FVCs of pre-treatment and post-treatment PFTs were $2.23{\pm}0.34(L)$ and $2.40{\pm}0.36(L)$ respectively (P<0.01). FEV1.0s of pre-treatment and post-treatment PFTs were $1.54{\pm}0.37(L)$ and $1.65{\pm}0.41(L)$ respectively (p<0.05). PEFRs of pre-treatment and post-treatment PFTs were $3.41{\pm}1.26(L)$ and $3.93{\pm}1.42(L)$ respectively (p<0.05). Conclusions From the above data, we conclude that FVC, FEV1.0, and PEFR in dyspneic patients have been improved after acupuncture therapy of Tian-zong, so acupuncture therapy of Tian-zong may relieve the dyspnea symptom.
Objective: The number of patients with chronic pain has increased over the past several decades. Seventy-eight percent of people over 60 in Korea suffer from many kinds of pain. This study was aimed to understand the current state of Oriental medicine for pain treatment. Method: We surveyed 415 Oriental medical doctors with items including rate of patients with pain, methods of diagnosis and of treatment. We also reviewed previous studies evaluating the effect of Oriental medicine for pain treatment. Results: About 85% doctors said that more than half of their patients have pain symptoms. The most common pain types were sprain and lower back pain. Diagnosis method depended on the pain type, but in all pain types, acupuncture treatment was the most used. In the result of review of previous studies, acupuncture treatment seemed to be effective for several pain symptoms, such as sprain and knee pain. However, the effect of Oriental medicine was controversial in most pain treatments. Conclusion: Oriental medicine is used a lot for pain treatment. However, many more mechanism studies and clinical trials should be conducted to establish the evidence.
Objectives : Fatigue is a common and distressing symptom that is a concern for cancer patients. It has a decisive effect on quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of clinical trial to evaluate of efficacy and safety of acupuncture on cancer related fatigue of lung cancer patients. Methods : Total lung cancer 9 patients complained of fatigue were treated by acupuncture twice a week for four weeks(8 times in total). Evaluation of the severity of fatigue was measured by FSS(Fatigue Severity Score). In visit 1, 10, we checked FSS. For check safety of acupuncture treatment, we did blood test. Results : After 4 weeks of acupuncture treatment, the FSS was significantly decreased from $4.92{\pm}1.06$ to $3.74{\pm}1.37$(p=0.008). And the level of hemoglobin was significantly increased from 10.87 g/dl to 12.01 g/dl(p=0.014). No other lab measures indicated any significant differences between before and after acupuncture treatment. Conclusions : This study suggests that acupuncture treatment will be beneficial for lung cancer patients to improve the fatigue severity. And acupuncture treatment is safe method for lung cancer patients. A large-scale study to confirm efficacy and safety of acupuncture is needed.
