(Background) Recent biotechnological breakthroughs are shedding new lights on various ethical and legal issues about human biological material. Since Rudolph Virchow, a German pathologist, had founded the medical discipline of cellular pathology, issues centering around human biological materials began to draw attention. The issues involving human biological materials were revisited with more attention along with series concerns when the human genome map was finally completed. Recently, with researches on human genes and bioengineering reaping enormous commercial values in the form of material patent, such changes require a society to reassess the present and future status of human tissue within the legal system. This in turn gave rise to a heated debate over how to protect the rights of material donors: property rule vs. no property rule. (Debate and Cases) Property rule recognizes the donors' property rights on human biological materials. Thus, donors can claim real action if there were any bleach of informed consent or a donation contract. Donors can also claim damages to the responsible party when there is an infringement of property rights. Some even uphold the concept of material patents overtaking. From the viewpoint of no property rule, human biological materials are objects separated from donors. Thus, a recipient or a third party will be held liable if there were any infringement of donor's human rights. Human biological materials should not be commercially traded and a patent based on a human biological materials research does not belong to the donor of the tissues used during the course of research. In the US, two courts, Moore v. Regents of the University of California, and Greenberg v. Miami Children's Hospital Research Institute, Inc., have already decided that research participants retain no ownership of the biological specimens they contribute to medical research. Significantly, both Moore and Greenberg cases found that the researcher had parted with all ownership rights in the tissue samples when they donated them to the institutions, even though there was no provision in the informed consent forms stating either that the participants donated their tissue or waived their rights to ownership of the tissue. These rulings were led to huge controversy over property rights on human tissues. This research supports no property rule on the ground that it can protect the human dignity and prevent humans from objectification and commercialization. Human biological materials are already parted from human bodies and should be treated differently from the engineering and researches of those materials. Donors do not retain any ownership. (Suggestions) No property rule requires a legal breakthrough in the US in terms of donors' rights protection due to the absence of punitive damages provisions. The Donor rights issue on human biological material can be addressed through prospective legislation or tax policies, price control over patent products, and wider coverage of medical insurance. (Conclusions) Amid growing awareness over commercial values of human biological materials, no property rule should be adopted in order to protect human dignity but not without revamping legal provisions. The donors' rights issue in material patents requires prospective legislation based on current uncertainties. Also should be sought are solutions in the social context and all these discussions should be based on sound medical ethics of both medical staffs and researchers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from a Korean traditional food kimchi. Gram staining was performed by Macrogen (Macrogen, Inc.) for identification of the LAB. Five strains of LAB were identified, including DKGF9 (Lactobacillus plantarum), DKGF1 (L. paracasei ), DKGF8 (L. casei ), DK207 (L. casei ), and DK211 (L. casei ). The biological activities of the isolated strains were assessed. The results showed that heat resistance of the strains was similar to or higher than the commercial strain L. acidophilus LA-5. Indirect testing of the ability of the strains to attach to the mucin layer revealed that DKGF9, DKGF1, and DKGF8 have high binding affinities for the mucous layer. All strains showed antimicrobial activity similar to or higher than the commercial strain LA-5. In proteolysis experiments, the diameters of proteolysis zones of the five strains increased in the period of 24-72 h, with DKGF1 exhibiting the largest zone diameter. Three strains were selected based on their antioxidant activities. Among the five isolated strains, L. paracasei DKGF1 showed potential probiotic activity, and thus, it may be useful for the development of health-promoting products.

Very little information is available in the literature on storage of fish sauce. Therefore, microbiological and chemical chracteristics during storage and quality of fish sauce were investigated and discussed to present data about the optimum storage condition. The chopped sardine meat was mixed with equal amount of water and $9\%$(w/w) of $75\%$ vital wheat gluten and then hydrolyzed by addition of commercial proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain, papaya protease, ficin and a enzyme mixture (Pacific Chem. Co.) for 4 hours at $52.5^{\circ}C$. The reaction mixture was heated for 30 min at $100^{\circ}C$ for enzyme inactivation, pasteurization and color development and then centrifuged for 20 min at 4,000 rpm. Table salt and benzoic acid were added for bacteriostatic effect and stored for 80 days at $15{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The amount of amino-nitrogen and pH of fish sauce were almost unchanged during storage. 2. Mininum concentration of salt for bacteriostatic activity was $9\%$(w/w) regardless of addition of benzoic acid. 3. the yields of amino-nitrogen were $63.1\%$ for the hydrolysate prepared without enzyme, $79.7\%$ for that with bromelain, $69.9\%$ with ficin, $74.3\%$ with papaya pretense, and $78.1\%$ with enzyme mixture, respectively. 4. The contents of amino-nitrogen were $4510.0mg\%$ on the dry basis for the product prepared by autolysis, $5483.2mg\%$ for that prepared with bromelain, $5305.7mg\%$ with ficin, $4994.1mg\%$ with papaya protease and $5582.3mg\%$ with the enzyme mixture, respectively. 5. The contents of crude protein were $51.35\%$ on the dry basis for the product prepared by autolysis and 55 to $59\%$ for prepared with commercial enzymes. 6. The hydrolysate prepared with the enzyme mixture revealed a little stronger meaty taste than any other products. 7. The level of crude protein in residues was still high ($69.5{\sim}77.2\%$ on the dry basis) and might be originated from the added vital wheat gluten.

Independent short animation was the expression method for young animation creators through creative and progressive representation. Since the birth of animation, independent short animation has become a driving force for qualitative development and diversification of animation. This has brought many works to the world that emphasize experimentation and challenges in the history of animation and in countries that have the rich animation resources such as France, Japan, and Canada, they recognize its importance and supports young creators in order to maintain the value of it. However, Korean animations are evaluated the quality of works by the popularity of the children, moreover, companies that focus on developing and selling products, including toys, rather than animation works themselves and public awareness that accepts them are formed throughout the Korean animation industry. Because of these points, Korean animation creators can not express the creative vision for the future and philosophical awareness of the problem and they are trapped in commercial animation markets. In order to re-leap and expand the Korean animation industry, which has reached the saturation level with infant animation, it is necessary to reestablish the value of independent short animations with challenging and experimental characteristics and requires the creative environment and support system for the diversity of Korean animation industries, including the achieving commercial goals through good planning, story development and technological innovation. For this purpose, this paper analyzes the current state of production, screening, distribution, and government support of independent short animation in Korea, and explores the structural problems and solutions.
Isopropylthioxanthone(ITX) is used as a photoinitiator In UV-cured inks, triggering the radical polymerization of the acrylic component of such inks and thus causing the liquid ink film to cure. Recently ITX was detected in carton packed food in Italy. In order to cope with risk issues of overseas and acquire monitoring data on ITX, we have established the method using HPLC/FLD for ITX analysis after reviewing parameters of the analytical methods. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.02 ppb and 0.1 ppb, and linearity and RSD (%) were 0.9991 and 1.09, respectively. We have investigated ITX levels migrated to food on 87 commercial products packed in carton and ITX was not detected any food. Therefore it is supposed that UV-cured ink containing ITX as photoinitiator is not currently used in printing of carton pack in Korea.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) markers allow rapid screening of crop varieties in early growth stages. We developed a modified SNP PCR procedure for assaying SNPs in maize. For SNP marker development, we chosen 200 SNP sites from MaizeGDB database, and designed two base pair mismatch primers based on putative SNP site of B73 genome sequence. PCR products size was from 200 to 500 bp or was not shown in the case of SNP site existing in Korean silage corns. Using previously discovered 16 primer sets, we investigated distinctness of 50 silage F1 hybrid corns including 10 Korean silage corns developed by RDA such as Gangdaok, Kwangpyeongok, Dapyeongok, Andaok, Yanganok, Singwangok, Jangdaok, Cheongdaok, Pyeonggangok, and Pyeonganok as well as 40 foreign commercial silage corns. From cluster analysis, we confirmed that 10 Korean silage F1 hybrid corns were clearly distinguished except for Singwangok, P1395, and several foreign commercial corns, and selected minimum SNP primer combination for Gangdaok, Jangdaok, Pyeonggangok, and Pyeonganok. Therefore, development of SNP marker sets might be faster, cheaper, and feasible breed discrimination method through simple PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis.

Due to the rapid urbanization and increased population, there is an increase in airtight nature of buildings which causes serious indoor air pollution. Among several indoor air pollutants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from paint are of major concern. Therefore, there is an urge for the development of environmental friendly paint products. In this wok, a natural wall paint (NWP) was prepared by utilizing a natural clay material "sericite" as a main component. A small chamber test was carried out to identify the toxic substances release from NWP and the results were compared with two eco-friendly commercial paints. The total VOCs were detected in trace level inside the test chamber and their concentrations were below the recommended indoor air quality standards. Toluene was not detected for NWP, whereas formaldehyde was observed in trace level. The toxicity index results were compared with two commercial paints and found that NWP exhibited less harmful gas emission. Based on certification rating of building materials, NWP can be classified as the first grade of building materials. Due to the above advantages, the use of sericite as a major component in NWP will be a useful technique to maintain the indoor air quality.

The present study was carried out to examine the antioxidative actions between the products of amino-carbonyl reaction and commercial antioxidants, and investigate their synergistic effects. Nondialyzable melanoidins exhibited more significantly in the antioxidative action than unfractionated meanoidins did. Also, in the case of unfractionated melanoidins, both glycine and histidine were more effective than aspartic acid for the antioxidative action. There was no significant difference among amino acids in the action of nondialyzable melanoidins. The unfractionated melanoidin was not as good as antioxidative action of the synthetic antioxidants, butylated hydroxytoluene, tert-butyl hydroquinone and ascorbic acid ; however, the one was superior to that of natural antioxidants, ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and lecithin. Otherwise, the action of nondialyzable melanoidin was similar to that of synthetic antioxidant. The synergistic effects were increased in using melanoidin with ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and lecithin except for the systems of fructose-aspartic acid and fructose-glycine in unfractionated melanoidins.
This study was conducted to evaluate the quality of the commercial boiled-dried anchovies (Engraulis japonicus) caught from different sea (southern, eastern and western sea) by determining chemical components and sensory evaluation. Product S was from the southern sea. product W was from the western sea and product E was from the eastern. The moisture content of product S was $22.9\%$ which was low compared with those of the product I ($27.4\%$%) and the product W ($27.8\%$). There are no difference in the acid-insoluble ash total amino acid (dry basis), mineral (dry basis) contents and fatty acid composition among products caught from different sea. On the other hand, The product S was superior in the lipid properties (peroxide value and (20:5n-3+22:6n-3)/16:0) and sensory Properties (appearance and color) to those of product I and product W. Judging from the above results of chemical analyses and sensory evaluation, the product S was the best quality among commercial boiled-dried anchovy, followed by product W, and then product E.
