  • Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely applied in various field, since it is nondestructive and no sample preparation is required. In this paper, NIR spectroscopy was used for the determination of naproxen in a commercial pharmaceutical preparation. NIR spectroscopy was used to determine the content of naproxen in intact naproxen tablets containing 250 mg ($65.8\%$ nominal concentration) by collecting NIR spectra in the range of $1100{\sim}1750nm$. The laboratory-made samples had $46.1{\sim}85.5\%$ nominal naproxen concentration. The measurements were made by reflection using a fiber-optic probe and calibration was carried out by partial least square regression (PLSR). Model validation was performed by randomly splitting the data set into calibration and validation data set (63 samples as a calibration data set and 42 samples as a validation data set). The developed NIR calibration gave results comparable to the known values of tablets in a laboratorial manufacturing process with standard error of calibration (SEC) and standard error of prediction (SEP) of $1.06\%\;and\;1.04\%$, respectively. The NIR method showed good accuracy and repeatability. NIR spectroscopic determination in intact tablets allowed the potential use of real time monitoring for a running production process.

  • In order to search new phosphors for plasma display panel(PDP), phosphate hosts which has a host excitation band at around 150nm were prepared and their luminescent properties were investigated. In the preparation of $YPO_4: Eu\; and\; (Y,Gd)PO_4: Eu$ phosphors, the effect of oxide and oxalate starting materials on prepared phosphors were compared in terms of relative emission intensities and particle characteristics. The results showed that oxalate starting materials gave better performance in emission intensities and smaller size and more round shape phosphors which would be more applicable for high resolution display. Additionally, Gd, V, Nb and Ta ions were doped to $YPO_4:Eu$ and the luminescent properties of the resulant solid solutions were investigated to find efficient sensitizer. Among these ions, Gd, V and Nb ions increased the emission intensities of parent phosphor to around 10%. While Nb ion gave the best result in emission intensities, CIE color coordinate were improved by doping V ion into $YPO_4:Eu$ phosphor to give x=0.6523, y=0.3406 compared to commercial sample.

  • Glass-ceramics were developed many years ago and have been applied in many fields such as electronics, chemistry, optics, etc. Much is already known about glass-ceramic technology, but many challenges in glass-ceramic research are still unresolved. Recently, large amounts of slag have steadily increased in the steel industry as by-products. To promote recycling of industrial waste, including steel industry slags, many studies have been performed on the fabrication of basalt-based high-strength glass-ceramics. In this study, we have fabricated such ceramics using various slags to replace high performance cast-basalt, which is currently imported. Glass-ceramic material was prepared in similar chemical compositions with commercial cast-basalt through a pyro process using slags and power plant by-product (Fe-Ni slag, converter slag, dephosphorization slag, Fly ash). The properties of the glass-ceramic material were characterized using DTA, XRD, and FE-SEM; measurements of compressive strength, Vicker's hardness, and abrasion were carefully performed. It is found that the prepared glass-ceramic material showed better performance than that of commercial cast-basalt.

  • The microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was prepared from oil palm biomass, empty fruit bunch (EFB) for increasing the usability of EFB. The morphological, physical and chemical properties of MCC made from EFB were evaluated by comparing with those of the commercial MCC obtained from AVICEL. The EFB-MCC had the wider distribution in particle size and there were many small particles around $10{\mu}m$. There were no significant differences in the cellulose crytallinity and the chemical composition between EFB-MCC and AVICEL-MCC. The properties of tablet samples made by the common direct compression process were evaluated depending on the types of MCC and the compression pressure during tablet making process. The tablet made of EFB MCC showed the higher compressed structure, which resulted in the less disintegration by the water soaking treatment than those made of Avicel-MCC. The results of this study showed that the EFB-MCC could be utilized as one of the commercial MCC.

  • Sweet potato starch noodles prepared without freezing exhibited higher cooking loss and water uptake during cooking and usually resulted in noodles with a softer and stickier texture compared to commercial sweet potato starch noodles manufactured using a freezing process. By utilizing the starches of different plant sources (potato, cowpea, and sago in an equivalent mixture with sweet potato starch), however, the cooking properties and texture of the starch noodles could be improved. Among the starches tested, cowpea starch was most effective in providing cooking and textural properties similar to those of commercial noodles. As an alternative approach, the addition of a minor amount (0.1 % based on total solid weight) of various gums (xanthan, gellan, locust bean gum, curdlan, and carboxymethyl cellulose) was also examined. The addition of curdlan to noodles was effective in increasing the gumminess and hardness, and reducing the stickiness of noodles. Utilizing different starches and gums can improve the overall texture and quality of sweet potato starch noodles produced without freezing.

  • Seaweed extracts, namely carrageenan obtained from Grateloupia elliptica and algin obtained from Laminaria, were employed as adhesive agents to synthesize solid adhesives for paper. Carrageenan from Grateloupia elliptica with the highest adhesive strength and lgin from Laminaria with the highest compressive strength was selected. The selected carrageenan and algin were mixed in a ratio of 7:3, and the mixture was employed as an adhesive agent. At a high temperature, sodium stearate(used as a solidifying material) oxidized the seaweed extracts. Consequently, carrageenan and algin were added to the final manufacturing process. The adhesive strength of the final synthesized solid adhesive is found to be 3.02 MPa and the compressive strength is found to be 30.5 N. Compared to the adhesive strength (2.95 MPa) and compressive strength (30.11 N) of commercial solid adhesives, the obtained results indicate superior adhesion characteristics. Furthermore, the proposed adhesive is environment-friendly because the presence of volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and heavy metals(such as chromium, lead, and cadmium) were not detected. Moreover, when used, the flatness of paper was twice that of commercial solid paper adhesives. Hence, the proposed adhesive can provide excellent adhesion, stability, and usability.

  • On the study, The activated carbon assemblies(ACA) were prepared by activation of the coated glass mate(woven type) with phenolic resin at $700^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ after drying and curing processes. Surface of the ACA was continuously modified with $N_2$, $CO_2$ or $NH_3$ at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour for comparison of adsorptive characteristics between the ACA and commercial activated carbon cloth. The ACA showed high surface areas up to $2440\;m^2/g$ when converted into the coated carbon base, and the surface was investigated by FT-IR and XPS. The basic ACA modified with $NH_3$ displayed the efficient removal capability of $SO_2$, which is 75% of that in commercial activated carbon cloth. Therefore, it has proved the applicability of ACA as an inexpensive materials for Dry de-SOX system.

  • Divalent europium-activated $Ca_2PO_4Cl$ phosphor powders were prepared by a chemical synthetic method followed by heat treatment in reduced atmosphere, and the crystal structures, morphologies and photoluminescence properties of the powders were investigated by x-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope and spectrometer. The effect of Ca/P mole ratio at the starting materials on the final products was evaluated. The optimized synthesis condition obtained in this study was Ca/P mole ratio of 2.0. The present phosphor materials had higher photoluminescence intensity and better color purity than the commercial blue phosphor powders, $(Ca,Ba,Sr)_{10}(PO_4)_6Cl_2:Eu^{2+}$. The result of excitation spectrum measurement indicated that the excitation efficiency of the synthesized powders was higher for the long-wavelength UV region than that of the commercial phosphor. It was thus concluded that the samples prepared in this study can be successfully applied for the light-emitting devices such as LED excited with long-wavelength UV light sources.
