The objective of the present study is to conduct model combustion tests for various injectors to identify their combustion stability characteristics. Three different double swirl coaxial injectors with variation of a recess length have been tested for the comparative study of CH flame structure and dynamic characteristics. Gaseous oxygen and mixture of gaseous methane and propane have been employed for simulating actual propellants used for a full-scale thrust chamber. Upon test results, the direct comparison between various types of injectors can be realized for the selection of the best design among prospective injectors.

The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) combustion is currently under intensive investigation because of its potential to increase thermal efficiency while greatly decreasing NOx and p.M. In order to account for the thermal boundary layer effects, the two-zone model has been developed to analyze the combustion characteristics of HCCI engine. The detailed chemistry are represented by the GRI mechanism 3.0 involving 53 species and 325reactions. The present combustion model has been validated against the experimental results. Computations are also made for the wide-range operating conditions of HCCI engine.

In this paper, a zero-dimensional two zone model is developed to investigate the effects of variable valve timing on combustion process in SI engine. The simulation results show that the predicted data has good agreement with experimental ones. The useful information of combustion process such like residual gas fraction cylinder pressure, cylinder temperature and NO concentration can be obtained and the effects of engine variables on combustion processes and performances can be evaluated.
A steady dilute premixed combustion at transonic speeds in a diverging channel is investigated. The model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow can be described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differencial equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. The asymptotic analysis results in the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The model is used to study transonic combustion at various amounts of incoming, reactant mass, reaction rates, and channel geometries.
Combustion of turbulent sprays in a direct injection diesel engine is modeled by the conditional moment closure (CMC) model. The CMC routines are combined with the KIVA code to provide conditional flame structures to determine mean state variables, instead of mean reaction rates. An independent transport equation is solved for each flame group with equal mass of sequentially evaporating fuel vapor. CMC calculation begins as the fuel mass for each flame group begins to evaporate with corresponding initialization conditions. Comparison is made with measured pressure traces for four operating conditions at different rpm's and injection conditions. Results show that the CMC model with multiple flame histories can successfully be applied to ignition and mixing-controlled combustion phases of a diesel engine.
A numerical study was carried out to investigate combustion phenomena in a model Scramjet engine, which had been experimentally studied at the University of Tokyo using a high-enthalpy supersonic wind tunnel. The main airflow was Mach number 2.0 and the total temperature of hot flow was 1800K. Equivalence ratio was set to be 0.26 which is higher than that of experiment to investigate the effect of strong precombustion shock. The results showed that self-ignition occurred at the rear bottom wall of the combustor and combined with the shear layer flame between fuel jet and main airflow. Then, precombustion shock was generated at the step location and reversely enhanced the mixing and combustion process behind the shock. Due to the high equivalence ratio, the precombustion shock moved upstream of the step compared with that of experiment.

The engine speed fluctuation at idle operation mainly comes from cyclic variation of combustion in SI engine. In the present study, engineering model that is representing the cyclic variation of combustion was proposed for the sub-model of the engine cycle simulation. From the observed behaviors of the mass burn rates, probability density functions for the parameters of Wiebe function were defined. The mass burn rate of each cycle is obtained by Monte Cralo perturbation method with the probability function. The simulation results shows that trends of cylinder pressure variation and imep distribution follow up with those of experimental results at idle condition.
A review of probability density function(PDF) methodology and direct numerical simulation for the purpose of modeling turbulent combustion are presented in this study where particular attention is focused on the modeling problem of turbulent molecular mixing term appearing in PDF transport equation. Existing mixing models results were compared to those evaluated by direct numerical simulation in a turbulent premixed medium with finite rate chemistry in which the initial scalar field is composed of pockets of partially burnt gases to simulate autoignition. Two traditional mixing models, the least mean square estimations(LMSE) and Curl#s model are examined to see their prediction capability as well as their modeling approach. Test calculations report that the stochastically based Curl#s approach, though qualitatively demonstrates some unphysical behaviors, predicts scalar evolutions which are found to be in good agreement with statistical data of direct numerical simulation.
In this study, the coupled simulation of fuel injection model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code was tried to develop an algorism for predicting the effects of varying fuel injection parameter on the characteristics of fuel injection and emissions. The numerical simulations were performed using STAR-CD code in order to calculate the intake air flow, and the combustion characteristics is examined by KIVA-3V code linked with the conditional moment closure(CMC) model to predict mean turbulent reaction rate. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters shows that appropriate modification of control chamber orifice diameter, needle valve spring constant and nozzle chamber orifice diameter can significantly reduce NOx and soot emissions. Consequently, it is needed to optimize the fuel injection system to reduce the specific emissions such as NOx and soot.
Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. Accordingly, the recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of engine efficiency and regression rate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the flamelet model and Low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model is employed to reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions have been made for the effects of oxygen injection methods and oxygen injection flow rate on flame structure and regression rate in the vortex hybrid rocket engines
