  • Synthesis gas such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide was produced from $CH_4/oxygen$ mixture using insulated pressurized porous media combustor. Experimentally, two cylindrical SiC foams with the different pore density were piled up in a quartz tube and fully premixed mixture was supplied in the axial direction. After stabilizing fuel-rich flame at the interface of the two foams at several pressure conditions, mole fractions of synthesis gases were measured by gas chromatography. Heat recirculation through the inner foam structure could extend the flow velocity of stable region over the laminar burning velocity. As the pressure increased, the rich flammability limit, $H_2/CO$ ratio, and module M increased.

  • Combustor development requires high fidelity simulation capable of predicting recirculation zone (RZ), temperature field, and pollutant emission. Swirling flow is widely used in combustor for its benefits in efficient mixing and flame stabilization by RZ. Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to calculate swirling flow in an expanding pipe [1], and shows higher accuracy than RANS. Reactive flow modeling using LES and flamelet model is validated with experiments by Barlow et al. [4] and Masri et al. [3]. Finally, heat transfer simulation of Samsung Techwin's combustor liner is presented.

  • The aim of this study was to find the initial design value of turbine blade for electrical type turbocompound system generating 10 kW. Turbocompound is one of the waste heat recovery system applying to internal combustion engine to recover exhaust gas energy that was about 30 % of total input energy. To design the turbine blade, 1-D mean line flow model was used. Exhaust gas temperature, pressure, flow rate and turbine rotating speed was fixed as primary boundary conditions. The velocity triangles was defined and used to determine the rotor inlet radius and width, the rotor outlet radius at shroud and radius at hub, the rotor flow angles and the number of blades.

  • One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.

  • This paper describes on the flame stability and combustion instability of coal derived synthetic gas especially for gases of Buggenum IGCC in Netherlands and Taean IGCC in Korea. These combustion characteristics were observed by conducting ambient-pressure elevated-temperature combustion tests in GE7EA model combustor when varying heat input and nitrogen dilution ratio. Flame stability map is plotted according to the flame structure by dividing all regimes into six, and only regime I and II are identified to be stable. Both syngases of Taean and Buggenum with nitrogen integration corresponds to regime II in which syngas burnt stably and flame coupled with outer recirculation flow. Stable regime of Buggenum is larger than that of Taean when considering only $H_2$/CO ratio due to higher content of hydrogen. However, when considering nitrogen dilution, syngas of Taean is burnt more stably than that of Buggenum since more nitrogen in Buggenum has negative effect on the stability of flame.

  • In this research, the problem of combustion and its system in Hyundai Heavy Industries and Sachuan Unison will be analyzed in order to provide some methods of thermal efficiency improvement and help to make a positive influence on fuel savings and their productivity. In forging industries, in order to improve the material properties of the industrial heating elements which are being used, depending on different operation conditions of system equipment and combustion systems, fuel consumption and material properties can get a profound influence. Thus, analyzing about combustion system characteristics of 100 tons heating furnace and heat treatment furnace which are in operation in Hyundai Heavy Industry will be done. In usual, air-fuel ratio is proper for capacity of burner installed in each heating device, otherwise burner gets an automatic turn down ratio. It has a profound influence on heating performance and precision of temperature because it is the fixed characteristics of every industrial furnace. Even if there are some methods to improve the heating performance of a furnace installed with a large capacity burner, it is very difficult to obtain the precision of temperature in maintenance interval. Based on this, performance of burner can be drove to best by improving combustion system. Proper Combustion characteristic for each heating interval was analyzed in heating furnace in Hyundai Heavy Industry. A project plan for improving fuel savings and increasing precision of temperature was presented in this research.

  • An experimental investigation of the flame appearance and heat transfer characteristics in both unexcited and excited impinging inverse diffusion flames with a loud speaker has been performed. The flame is found to become broader and shorter (in length) with acoustic excitation. The heat flux at the stagnation point is increased with the acoustic excitation. The acoustic excitation is more effective in lean conditions than in rich conditions. The reasons for these behaviors are that acoustic excitation improves the entrainment of surrounding air into the jet. From this study, it is found that the maximum increase of 57% in the total heat flux is obtained at the stagnation point of $\Phi$=0.8. Therefore, it is ascertained that the excitation combustion can be adopted with effective instruments as a method for improving heat transfer in impinging jet flames.

  • For a cooling performance research of the combustor operated in a extreme environment of a high temperature and high pressure, we accomplished a cooling performance analysis. Generally a heat transfer characteristic in cooling passage is known well experimentally and theoretically, however heat flux in the combustion chamber isn't. In this study, fluid flow combined with heat transfer and thermal structural analysis is accomplished about a combustor nozzle. We tried to analyze the cooling performance with a heat transfer characteristic of a gas and coolant side in the view point of quantity on the mass flow rate to be supplied to the cooling channel. And finally, evaluation on the thermal and structural safety of nozzle wall material was accomplished.

  • KEPRI has studied anode-supported planar SOFCs and kW class stacks operated at intermediate temperature for development of a combined heat and power unit. A single cell composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/ScSZ/LSCF showed the maximum power density of 0.55 W/$cm^2$ at $650^{\circ}C$ and 1.8 W/$cm^2$ at $750^{\circ}C$. With 37 cells of 10${\times}10cm^2$ and stainless steel interconnects, a 1kW class SOFC stack was manufactured. When a 1kW class SOFC system was operated at $750^{\circ}C$ with city gas, it showed the power output of 1.3 kWe at 50 A. It also recuperated heat of 0.57-1.2 kWth according to the loaded current through combustion of unreacted anode off-gas. Recently, KEPRI is developing a new kW class SOFC stack and system to increase efficiency and durability at intermediate temperature.
