  • In proportion to the increase of industrial development, emission troubles were concerned as global issue. For these reasons, so many researchers and associated institutes effort to reduce pollution with new technology and various devices. As a kind of these methods, we used catalysts as a after-treatment system. At first, we made equipment of model furnace. And various catalysts were equipped at exhaust duct of combustion system, and excess air ratio( ), change cell numbers, catalyst materials(Pt, Pd) were changed as experimental conditions. With these various condition, temperature, NOx, CO, HC, $CO_2$ and $O_2$ concentration were measured. As a result, NOx conversion were increased with increasing of cell number in Pd catalyst. And Pt catalyst were became 100% conversion at 200 and 300 cell. Also, Pt catalyst was better than Pd catalyst ${\alpha}$=1.5 in this condition. In addition, CO and HC concentrations were decreased${\alpha}$=1.5 with Pd catalyst.

  • The aim of this study is to numerically investigate a compact reformer system currently under development and to design a better reforming system with more efficient heat transfer and reforming reactions. Numerical models were established separately for both the combustion part and the reforming reaction part. A comparison between the calculation results and experimental data showed that the concentration of the reformate at the exit of the reforming system was in good agreement with the measured data, but for the temperature at the exit little difference between them was found. After checking the validity of the numerical models, the heat transfer between the combustion gas and reforming catalysts was estimated and the behavior of the catalyst bed was investigated as a function of the operation parameters.

  • A two-step fuel-rich/fuel-lean catalytic combustion seems to be one of the most effective methods to control simultaneously the NO generation and the hydrocarbon (HC) conversion from fuel-bound nitrogen. By controlling equivalent air ratio for maintaining fuel-rich and fuel-lean condition over each catalytic layer, space velocity, inlet temperature, and catalyst component, the HCand ammonia conversion efficiency higher than 95% could be achieved, with ammonia conversion to NO remaining below 5%. The experimental results wouldbe applied to the combustion of land fill gas and to gasified refuse-derived fuels as a method of minimizing NO generation.

  • Catalytic combustion is the environmental-friendly technology, which has been applied to a variety of areas for industrial and domestic use in recent years. Accordingly, this study performed the development of the catalytic manufacturing technology for the high temperature and of the catalytic combustor in priority, which were aimed to be applied to a commercialized boiler. Paliadium(Pd) of a noble metal was used as a catalyst for the high temperature and supported on alumina($Al_[2}O_{3}$) and zirconia($ZrO_{2}$) in constant weight ratio. Activity of Pd catalysts is compared and analyzed in the catalytic combustion of natural gas. The ratio of $Pd/Al_{2}O_{3}=4$ was found to be better than any other weight ratios in activity and durability. The performance examination of catalysts and of combustion through the plate-type combustor made it possible to be developed the cylindrical-type combustor which has increased combustion area. Catalytic combustion boiler of 25,000 kcal/hr class was also developed, which had the optimum combustion condition at the nozzle of 5.95mm and the orifice of 21mm. This condition was determined through the performance experiments of catalytic combustion boiler to which the cylindrical-type catalytic combustor was applied.

  • Catalytic steam reforming of tar produced from biomass gasification was conducted using several Ni-based catalysts. K and Mn were used as a promoter over $Ni/Ru/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The pellet and monolith type catalysts were prepared and applied to lab and bench-scale biomass gasification system. The $Ni/Ru-K/Al_2O_3$ catalyst shown higher performance than $Ni/Ru-Mn/Al_2O_3$ catalyst at low temperature range.

  • Two catalyst systems with different content of precious metal coated on DOC are carefully tested in a diesel engine to investigate the emission characteristics of $NO_2$. Three types of experiment methods ($NO_2$ conversion test, ETC mode test, and BPT test) are applied to compare the performance of the two catalyst systems. All the experimental results consistently indicate that it is possible to satisfy $NO_x$ regulation by properly lowering the content of precious metal without the loss of PM removal performance.

  • Pd catalyst have been used in hydrogenation, oxidation, and low temperature combustion reaction. Recently, it has been candidated as a possible reagents in the partial oxidation of methanol reformers of the fuel cell. Pd catalysts, even though it is very precious and expensive, catalytic functioning is good, but it still need to be improved in the matter of durability and low catalytic activity after calcination. In this study, we synthesize the improved Pd catalyst and study their chemical functioning.

  • The improvement of combustion stability is very important because it is closely related to the exhaust emission concentrations as well as the fuel consumption during the cold start of SI engine. In our previous studies, the spark and exhaust valve timings were retarded individually from the baseline case to increase the exhaust gas temperature far fast warmup of a close-coupled catalyst. In the study, it was found that combustion stability during cold start becomes worse when the valve timing is retarded from the baseline conditions. The spark and valve timings were simultaneously changed from the baseline conditions to find out the variation of combustion stability during cold start of an Sl engine. Through the study. retarded spark timing by $5^{\circ}$ CA helps improvement of $COV_{imep}$ by $2\%$ and $15^{\circ}C$ increase of exhaust temperature. Retarded exhaust valve timing makes the exhaust gas temperature increase by $30^{\circ}C$, but it also deteriorates the $COV_{imep}$ by $1\%$.

  • Catalytic combustion of benzene over CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxides prepared by co-precipitation method were investigated. The CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxides were also prepared using different precipitant and CuO precursor. They were characterized by XRD, BET, XPS and $H_2-TPR$. In the CuO-$CeO_2$ catalysts, characteristic copper oxide peaks were shown at $2{\Theta}=35.5^{\circ}$ and $38.5^{\circ}$ regardless of the precipitant. The Cu0.35 catalyst prepared using $NH_4OH$ as a precipitant revealed the highest activity on the combustion of benzene. In addition, the pretreatment with hydrogen enhanced the catalytic activity and the catalyst reduced at $400^{\circ}C$ showed the highest activity on the combustion of benzene.
