  • The combustion instability of a rocket motor can be predicted by the linear stability analysis. The most important input data in this analysis is the combustion response function of the solid propellant. In many cases, it is very difficult to measure the function. But, in that case, the combustion response function can be theoretically evaluated by properties of the propellant. In this study, the theoretical values were compared with measured values by T-burner. Data are relatively so well agreed that theoretical values are enough to be used in linear stability analysis of the rocket motor using a newly developed propellant.

  • Hybrid rocket combustion has a manifestation of stable response to the perturbations compared to solid propellant combustion. Recently, it has revealed that the low frequency combustion instability about 10 Hz was occurred mainly due to thermal inertia of solid fuel. In this paper, the combustion response function was theoretically derived by use of ZN (Zeldovich-Novozhilov) method. The result with HTPB/LOX combination showed a quite good agreement in response function with previous works and could predict the low frequency oscillations with a peak around 10 Hz which was observed experimentally. Also, it was found that the amplification region in the frequency domain is independent of the regression rate exponent n but showed the dependence of activation energy. Moreover, the response function has shown that the hybrid combustion system was stable due to negative heat release of solid fuel for vaporization, even though the addition of energetic ingredients such as AP and Al could lead to increase heat release at the fuel surface.

  • Theoretical-numerical approach of combustion instability in a specific rocket engine is conducted with parametric response functions. Fluctuating instantaneous burning rate is assumed to be functionally coupled with acoustic pressures and have a finite or time-varying amplitudes and phase lags. Only when the amplitudes and phases of combustion response function are sufficiently large and small respectively, the triggered unstable waves are amplified.

  • A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

  • This paper describes the forced flame response in a turbulent premixed gas turbine combustor. The fuel was premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. To impose the inlet flow velocity, a siren type modulation device was developed using an AC motor, rotating and static plates. Measurements were made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The test results showed that flame length as well as geometry was strongly dependent upon modulation frequency in addition to operating conditions such as inlet velocity. Convection delay time between the velocity perturbation and heat release fluctuations was calculated using phase information of the transfer function, which agreed well with the results of flame length measurements. Also, basic characteristics of the flame nonlinear response shown in the current test conditions were introduced.

  • An experimental study of the flame response in a turbulent premixed combustor has been conducted with room temperature, atmospheric pressure inlet conditions using premixed natural gas. The fuel is premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. Therefore the observed flame response is only the result of the imposed velocity fluctuations, which are produced using a variable speed siren. Measurements are made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The results are analyzed to determine the phase and gain of the flame transfer function as a function of the modulation frequency. Of particular interest is the effect of flame structure on the flame response predictions and measurements. The results show that both the gain and the phase of flame transfer function are closely associated with the flame length and structure, which is dependent upon the upstream flow perturbation as well as equivalence ratio in the current study.

  • The unsteady heat release characteristics play a significant role in combustion instabilities observed in low emissions gas turbine combustors. Such combustion instabilities are often caused by coupling mechanisms between unsteady heat release rates and acoustic perturbations. A generalized model of the turbulent flame response to acoustic perturbations is analytically formulated by considering a distributed heat release along a curved mean flame front and using the flame's kinematic model that incorporates the turbulent flame development. The effects of the development of flame speed on the flame transfer functions are examined by calculating the transfer functions with a constant or developing flame speed. The flame transfer function due to velocity fluctuation shows that, when a developing flame speed is used, the transfer function magnitude decreases faster with Strouhal number than the results with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. The flame transfer function due to mixture ratio fluctuation, however, exhibits the opposite results: the transfer function magnitude with a developing flame speed increases faster than that with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. Oscillatory behaviors of both transfer function magnitudes are shown to be damped when a developing flame speed is used. Both transfer functions also show similar behaviors in the phase characteristics: The phases of both transfer functions with a developing flame speed increase more rapidly than those with a constant flame speed.

  • This paper presents a method for estimating the noise source contribution of a pulse combustion burner in a multiple input system where the input sources may be coherent each other. By coherence function method, it is found that the biggest part of the noise source in the pulse combustion burner is generated by the part of the combustion chamber. This analysis is modeled as three input / single output system because the noise generating mechanism of the pulse combustion burner is very complicated. The coherence function method is proved to be useful tool for the identification of noise source. The overall levels of the radiated source pressure by coherence function method are compared with those measured and calculated by the frequency response function approach. The experimental results have shown a good agreement with the results calculated by the coherence function method when the input sources are coherent strongly each other. The estimation of shield effect by FRF method indicates that significant reduction can be achieved in sound radiation if only transmission path generated by the part of combustion chamber is acoustically shield.
