The combustion characteristics using forced pulsating flow were experimentally investigated with confined premixed flames stabilized by a reward-facing step. The intermittent combustion has many merits, for instance, such as high load combustion, high heat transfer, low emission gas, compared with those of continuous combustion. For these purposes, data processing of binary image was conducted to reveal the differences between intermittent and continuous combustion. As the results, it was possible to calculate the reaction zone using OH-emission band and, therefore, showed that forced pulsating flow was useful in combustion technology.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of low-temperature combustion (LTC) on the correlations of combustion characteristics and reduction of exhaust emissions in a small DI diesel engine with biodiesel fuel. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emission characteristics and distribution of nano size particles for biodiesel were investigated. In addition, to evaluate the effect of LTC on the combustion and emission characteristics, 30 and 50% of cooled-EGR rates were investigated. From these results, it revealed that the influence of LTC on the combustion characteristics showed that the ignition delay significantly increased and reduces peak heat release rate of premixed combustion by lowering reaction rate. With 50% EGR and advanced injection timing, soot and $NO_x$ emissions were simultaneously reduced.
Meso-scale combustion is defined as combustion phenomena within limited characteristic length scales that are comparable with the laminar flame length scales. In the laminar flame theory, four representative length scales have been involved; i.e., a reaction layer thickness, a thermal layer thickness, a quenching distance, and a Markstein length. When the effects of these length scales on the flame characteristics are understood, the laminar flame theories can be clarified. Therefore, a study on the meso-scale combustion phenomena should not be thought as just a specific phenomena occurring in an exceptional combustion condition. Instead, all combustion phenomena within meso-scale spaces need to be explained by our knowledge. During this challenge, our understanding on laminar flame structures can be extended. Considering that most turbulent combustion phenomena in engineering application are still have local laminar flame structures, studies on laminar flame structures need to be re-visited especially in academic aspects.
Combustion of coke grains in a pellet used to be modeled using the shrinking core model in the previous indurator simulations. This leads to the discussions about its propriety due to the fundamental assumptions of the model inconsistent with the particle characteristics. The current study presents the grain model as an improvemen, and the differently used reaction models are compared. In addition, the simulations assuming changed particle conditions are conducted to display the effects of using the grain model.
Reaction characteristics and kinetics of a oxygen carrier (OCN717-R1SU) for chemical looping combustion (CLC) have been investigated using TGA by changing gas concentration (10-30 vol.% $CH_4$) and reaction temperature ($825-900^{\circ}C$). Reaction rate of OCN717-R1SU increased as temperature increased and it was found that reaction is delayed at the initial reaction regime. Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) model was adopted to explain the reaction phenomenon. The activation energy (E) determined by JMA model in reduction reaction of OCN717-R1SU is $151.7{\pm}2.03kJ/mol$ and pre-exponential factor and JMA exponent were also obtained. The parameters calculated in this study will be applied in design of the reactor and operation conditions for CLC process.
In this study, the waste of landfill was treated using advanced enriched oxygen combustion system. The oxygen concentration of this study was 21%, 25%, 30% and 40% and the operating capacity was 200 g/min and the residence time was 10 minutes. As increased the oxygen concentration of combustion air. temperature of the incinerator was increased and the temperature was increased rapidly when the oxygen concentration was 30%. As increased the oxygen concentration, the NOx (ppm) of flue gas increase d for thermal NOx, however the CO (ppm) of flue gas decreased according to the increase of combustion efficiency . The optimum operation condition of incineration was obtained when the oxygen concentration is 30%${\sim}$40%. The unburned carbon of ash decreased from 10% to 4% when the oxygen concentration was increased from 21% to 30%, therefore the high combustion efficiency can be obtained if used the oxygen enriched combustion system.
The conventional regenerative system has a high thermal efficiency as well as energy saving using the high preheated combustion air. in spite of these advantages, it can not avoid high nitric oxide emissions. Recently, flameless combustion has received much attention to solve these problems. In this research, numerical analysis is performed for flow-combustion phenomena in the self regenerative burner. In this analysis we used Fluent 6.0 code. the that is developed for commercial use, Methane gas is used as a fuel and two-step reaction model for methane and Zeldovich mechanism for NO generation are used. the velocity of the preheated combustion air is used as a parameter and we analyze the characteristics of flow-field, temperature distributions and NO emissions. Due to the increased recirculation rate, the maximum temperature of flame is significantly increased and NOx emissions is reduced.
The present study investigates the combustion phenomena in a sludge incinerator using experimental and numerical method. The temperature and gas concentration were measured at 33 points during operation of the incinerator in order to assess the mixing and combustion characteristics. Numerical simulation was also carried out using a commercial CFD code. Simplified inlet conditions were introduced in oder to predict the bulk solid combustion and the diffusion of the volatile matter released by pyrolysis of sludge. The experimental results showed that the combustion process is extremely inhomogeneous. Large variations were observed in the temperature and gas concentrations in the freeboard of the incinerator due to poor mixing performance between the air and the combustibles, which is caused by massive and bulk generation of volatile matter by fast pyrolysis of sludge particles. The boundary condition of the CFD simulation was found effective in predicting the poor mixing and combustion performance of the reactor.
Catalytic combustion known as one of the traditional oxidation methods of VOC gas is restricted to its applicable fields because of its reaction characteristics. But recently innovative improvement of catalytic endurance makes its applicable range broader from MEMs to industrial power generation. Therefore, control technologies based on the catalytic combustion characteristics are researched and developed dynamically. Especially, the stable control of catalytic combustion is an essential factor in a view of maximizing its efficiency. In this research, the fuel equivalence ratio and the preheating temperature of mixture gas is controlled by catalytic combustion system enhanced in heat transfer with high temperature heat exchanger. As a result, the combustion characteristics of system was investigated, and both passive and active control type were compared and analyzed.
Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is the best concept able to provide low NOx and PM in diesel engine emissions. This new alternative combustion process is mainly controlled by chemical kinetics in comparison with the conventional combustion in internal combustion engine. However, HCCI engine's operation have an excessive rate of pressure rising during the combustion process. In this study, stratification condition of EGR exhaust gases was used to reduce the pressure rising during the combustion process in HCCI engine. Also, combustion characteristics and emissions characteristics were investigated using the detailed diesel surrogate reaction mechanism.
