Anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cell still contains combustible components such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon. In this study, a catalytic combustor has been applied to the high temperature fuel cell so that the combustion of anode-off gas can be boosted up. Since the performance of catalytic combustor directly depends on the combustion catalyst, this study is designed to perform the experimental investigation on the combustion characteristics of the three commercial catalysts with a different composition. Screening tests with three catalysts are preceded before the performance examination since it is necessary to determine the most suitable catalyst for design configuration of the catalytic combustor. The performance analysis shows that methane conversion rate strongly depends on gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) as well as inlet gas temperature. Additionally, the GSHV optimization results show that the optimum GHSV will be in the range between 18,000 $hr^{-1}$ and 36,000 $hr^{-1}$. It is also shown that the minimum inlet temperature of catalytic reaction of methane is from $100^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$.
An axially staged combustor equipped with an LPP combustion system and CMC liner walls has been investigated for stable combustion and low NOx emissions for the ESPR project. Several fuel injectors were designed and manufactured for the LPP burner, and single sector combustor tests were conducted to evaluate fundamental combustion characteristics such as emissions, instabilities, auto-ignition, and flash back at typical operating conditions from idle to Mn 2.2 cruise. The latest test results showed that the LPP burner had a good potential for the low NOx target. It was also found that the NOx emission level was greatly affected by a distortion in the air flow velocity field upstream of the LPP burner due to the diffuser and fuel feed arm. The CMC material was investigated to apply for the high temperature and low NOx combustor. Annular combustor liner walls were manufactured with the CMC material, and they have been tested at low pressure conditions to evaluate the soundness of the material and the mounting and seal system. This paper reports the latest research activities on the LPP combustion system and CMC liner walls for the ESPR project.
Using lobed burner, flame visualization and measurements of NOx and CO concentration in the combustor exit were carried out to evaluate the relation between the lobed structure in a burner and pollutant emission characteristics. The flame stability is enhanced by the lobed burner compared to conventional circular one. The correlation on fuel discharge velocity for flame blowout should be included on a variable related to the wall effect of the burner, because the flame blowout is observed at the burner having large perimeter. The burner having lobed structure in fuel discharge side compared to conventional burner reduces by 5% NOx emission due to lower flame intensity through flame elongation. Meanwhile the burner having lobed structure in air discharge side and both fuel and air discharge side increase the NOx emission.
Flame structure of diffusion flame interacting with a single vortex was investigated with direct numerical simulation (DNS). A well-known counterflow diffusion flame was used as an initial flat flame and single vortices were made by issuing a high-velocity jet abruptly in fuel- and air-side. The variations in the maximum concentration of major species (CO and $CO_2$) and NOx (NO and $NO_2$) with the stoichiometric scalar dissipation rate were investigated. Unsteady effects in the species concentration variation of the flame interacting with a vortex were identified by comparing with that of steady flame. $NO_2$ formation characteristics of the flame interacting with a vortex were well understood by investigating the $HO_2$ formation. To enhance the prediction performance in the fire simulation, current turbulent combustion modelings are needed to be modified by adopting the unsteady effects in the species concentrations of diffusion flame interacting with a vortex.
This paper presents the experimental results of a study undertaken to develop an electrostatic spray system for a combustion application. The characteristics of the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion in the electrostatic spray of twin fluids were investigated by the optical measurement techniques. The processes associated with the break-up of charged jets were also observed using the laser sheet visualization. The diameter and velocity of droplets were simultaneously measured using the phase Doppler measurement technique. The electrostatic atomization of the liquid fuel depended primarily on the charging voltage and the flow rate, but the dispersion of droplets depended significantly on the aerodynamic flow. Aerodynamic influences on the liquid atomization decreased with an increase of the charging voltage. Consequently, the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion could be independently controlled using the electrostatic and aerodynamic mechanisms.
A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the formation characteristics of a single vortex interacting with $CH_4/N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector scheme for a low Mach number flow. The detailed transport properties and a 16-step augmented reduced mechanism are adopted in this calculation. The budgets of the vorticity transport equation arc examined to reveal the mechanisms leading to the formation, evolution and dissipation of a single vortex interacting with counterflow nonpremixed flame. It is found that the stretching term, which depends on the azimuthal component of vorticity, and radial velocity, mainly generates vortieitv in non-reacting and reacting flows. The viscous and baroclinic torque term destroy the vorticity in non-reacting flow. In addition, the baroclinic torque term due to density and pressure gradient generates vorticity, while viscous and the volumetric expansion terms due to density gradient destroy vorticity in reacting flow.
A premixed flame propagating in a tube suffers strong variation in its shape and structure depending on boundary conditions. The effects of thermal boundary conditions and flow fields on flame propagation are numerically investigated. Navier-Stokes equations and species equations are solved with a one-step irreversible global reaction model of methane-air mixture. Finite volume method using an adaptive grid method is applied to investigate the flame structure. In the case of an adiabatic wall, friction force on the wall significantly affected the flame structure while in the case of an isothermal wall, local quenching near the wall dominated flame shapes and propagation. In both cases, variations of flow fields occurred not only in the near field of the flame but also within the flame itself, which affected propagation velocities. This study provides an overview of the characteristics of flames in small tubes at a steady state.
Tumble or swirl flow is used adequately to promote mixing of air and fuel in the cylinder and to enlarge turbulent intensity in the late time of compression stroke. However, since in-cylinder flow is a kind of transient state with rapid flow variation, that is, non-steady state flow, swirl or tumble flow has not been analyzed sufficiently and not been recognized whether they are available for combustion theoretically yet. In the investigation of intake turbulent characteristics using PIV method, different flow characteristics were showed according to SCV figures. SCV installed engine had higher vorticity, turbulent strength by fluctuation and turbulent kinetic energy than a baseline engine, especially around the wall and lower part of the cylinder. Consequently, as swirl flow was added to existing tumble flow, it was found that fluctuation component increased and flow energy was conserved effectively through the experiment.
An experimental study was performed to develop the rotational fuel injection system of the micro turbojet engine. In this system, fuel is sprayed by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. The test rig was designed and manufactured to get droplet information on combustion space. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational device(Air-Spindle), fuel feeder, rotational fuel injector and acrylic case. To understand spray characteristics, spray droplet size, velocity and distribution were measured by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the length of liquid column from injection orifice is controlled by the rotational speeds and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) is decreased with rotational speed. Also, Sauter Mean Diameter is increased as increasing mass flow rate at same rotational speeds.
