  • With the experiment observation of single particle combustion, this model is built for the numerical analysis of the process. It's about the single coal particle combustion process under different conditions with reasonable assumptions. The model can express the mass, radius, density, temperature changing with different particle sizes, oxygen concentration and gas temperature. It also includes the flame sizes change in different condition and the diffusion of each species. The result shows the characters of the combustion.

  • A skeletal mechanism of coal combustion was derived from a detailed coal combustion kinetic mechanism through an importance analysis of chemical pathways. The reduction process consists of roughly two parts. The first process is performed based on a connectivity analysis between species. In this process, DRGEPSA is chosen for reduction process. Strongly connected species and related reactions from the important species set as start species by the operator are sorted into the reduced mechanism. About 70% of species and reactions can be removed with a limited accuracy loss. Subsequently the second reduction process, CSP, is performed. This method focuses on an importance of each reaction and can reduce a volume of mechanism appropriately. Through these analyses, a skeletal mechanism is generated that is including 65 species and 150 reactions. The generated skeletal mechanism is verified through a comparison with the detailed mechanism in the homogeneous reactor model of CHEMKIN-PRO under wide range of conditions. The generated mechanism can give an advantage in the analysis of coal combustion characteristics in detail in large scale simulations such as LES and DNS.

  • To evaluate the combustion mechanism of each droplet cluster downstream of the premixed spray flame, the simultaneous time-series measurements were conducted by using optical measurement system consisting of laser tomography, multi-color integrated Cassegrain receiving optics (MICRO) and phase Doppler anemometer (PDA). Furthermore, the group combustion number of droplet cluster was estimated experimentally, and the combustion mechanism of droplet cluster was examined applying the theoretical analysis. The group combustion number, $G_c$, was experimentally estimated about all droplet cluster verified by planar images, and it was classified into the internal group combustion mode and the external group combustion mode according to the theoretical analysis. It is found that there are cases in which the group combustion number estimated experimentally for droplet cluster agree or disagree with the classification by theoretical analysis. The reason of disagreement is considered due to that the group combustion number was only estimated by the geometrical arrangement of droplets in cluster, and that the actual phenomenon is three-dimensional but the measurement system is two-dimensional.

  • A multi-step quasi-global mechanism is developed for the kerosene/oxygen combustion analysis including dissociation products. Reaction constants of the global reaction are determined to have agreement with experimental data. The mechanism is used for the numerical analysis of the combustion flow field of the kerosene/oxygen shear coaxial injector. The results from high-resolution numerical analysis confirmed qualitatively that the recess enhance the fuel/air mixing and combustion efficiency by the increased flow instabilities.

  • In order to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel engine under wide operating range, an experimental study based on a new concept of combustion called HCDC(Homogeneous Charge Diesel Combustion) was conducted. In this concept, most of the fuel is supplied as premixed homogeneous charge and the rest is directly injected into a cylinder to ignite. In this study we compared combustion characteristics of an HCDC engine with those of conventional diesel engines. At high premixed fuel ratio and high load range, it was observed that premixed combustion heat release rate was low and diffusion combustion duration was shorten. from this experiment, it was found that NOx is reduced by the lower maximum temperature and soot is reduced by rapid combustion during diffusion combustion phase.

  • Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis of the thermal flow in a municipal solid waste(MSW) incinerator combustion chamber provides crucial insight on the incinerator performance. However, the combustion of the waste bed is typically treated as an arbitrarily selected profile of combustion gas. A strategy for simultaneous simulation of the waste bed combustion and the thermal flow fields in the furnace chamber was introduced to substitute the simple inlet condition. A waste bed combustion model was constructed to predict the progress of combustion in the bed and corresponding generation of the gas phase species, which assumes the moving bed as a packed bed of homogeneous fuel particles. When coupled with CFD, it provides boundary conditions such as gas temperature and species distribution over the grate, and receives radiative heat flux from CFD. The combined simulation successfully predicted the physical processes of the waste bed combustion and its interaction with the flow fields for various design and operating parameters, which was limited in the previous CFD simulations.

  • Combustion behavior of pulverized coal particles in a post-combustion gas reactor was investigated. Radiation emission from coal particles were analyzed by direct photograph and $CH^*$ radical chemiluminescence intensity. Coal particles were sampled during the combustion and were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cross section micrograpy technique. Two coal types(one bituminous and one subbituminous coals typically used in the Korean power plants) were tested at typical combustion environment. Gas flow conditions were controlled to represent temperature and oxygen concentration. Experimental data were discussed along with conceptual descriptions of pulverized coal combustion, where particle heat-up, release and combustion of volatiles, and char combustion were sequentially progressed.

  • It is necessary to understand the combustion process and cycle-by-cycle variation in combustion to improve the engine stability and consequently to improve the fuel economy and exhaust emissions. The pressure related parameters instead of mass fraction burned were compared for the effect of initial combustion pressures on the following combustion and the analysis of cycle-by-cycle variation in combustion for two pen injected SI engines. The correlation between IMEP and pressures at referenced crank angles showed almost the same trends for equivalence ratios, but the different mixture preparations indicated different tendency. The dependency of IMEP on pressure at the referenced crank angles increases as the mixture becomes leaner for both engines. The mixture distribution in the combustion chamber was varied with the coolant temperature and intake valve deactivation due to the evaporation of fuel and air motion. The correlation between pressure related parameters were also compared for the coolant temperatures and air motion.

  • The paper discusses a combustion instability phenomena encountered in recent solid rocket motor development efforts at ADD(Agency for Defense Development). It has happened to occur as an irregular burning in development of smokeless propellant rocket motor. Through investigating the spectral analysis of accelerometer and strain gage signals which are recorded in static firing tests and acoustic modal analysis of motor inside cavity with ANSYS, the instability is found to be the second tangential mode.

  • Diesel engines exhaust much more NOx(Nitrogen Oxides) and PM(Particulate Matter) than gasoline engines, and it is not easy to reduce both NOx and PM simultaneously because of the trade-off relation between two components. This study investigated flame characteristics of the partial premixed compression ignition known as new combustion method which can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. The investigation was performed through the analysis of the flame images taken by a high speed camera from the visible engine which is the modified single cylinder diesel engine. The results obtained through this investigation are summarized as follows; (1) The area of the luminous yellow flame was reduced due to the decrease of flame temperature and even distribution of temperature. (2) The darkish yellow flame zone caused by the shortage of the remaining oxygen after the middle stage of combustion was considerably reduced. (3) Since the ignition delay was shortened, the violent combustion did not occur and the combustion duration became shortened.
