Callus culture initiation of strawberry (Fragaria${\times}$ananassa Duch.) was investigated at different Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium strengths, types and concentrations of plant growth regulators, and incorporating a cold pretreatment period to determine the optimal nutritional and environmental conditions. No high quality callus was induced on MS media without auxin regardless of medium strength. When 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) was combined with indole acetic acid (IAA), naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), high quality callus were highly induced compared to medium supplemented with auxin alone. When $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA was combined with IAA, NAA, and 2,4-D, high quality callus induction was more effective than the medium supplemented with the other BA concentrations. The best combination of auxin and cytokinin for high quality callus induction was $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA. Although the differences in callus induction were not significant, high quality callus induction at half strength MS medium was more effective than at full strength medium. When $30g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sucrose was added to the half strength MS medium, the rate of high quality callus induction increased. The optimum cold pretreatment temperature and period for high quality callus induction were $4^{\circ}C$ and 72 h, respectively. Regeneration rate of high quality callus increased in MS medium supplemented with thidiazuron.

The algal bloom, resulting from eutrophication, has caused serious water quality problems in river and lake. Therefore, it has to be removed by any means including physicochemical or biological treatment for preserving water quality. This study was conducted to investigate the microalgae removal and energy production using combined electro-flotation and anaerobic hydrogen fermentation processes. The result showed that algae removal efficiency based on chlorophyll a removal increased with the current. At a current of 0.6A, the maximum microalgae removal efficiency of 95.9% was achieved. The treatability of anaerobic hydrogen fermentation was investigated to recover energy from microalgae removed by electro-flotation. The ultimate hydrogen yields of algae before and after ultrasonic pretreatment were 17.3 and 61.1 ml $H_2/g$ dcw(dry cell weight), respectively. The ultrasonic pretreatment of algae led to 3.4-fold higher $H_2$ production due to the increase of hydrolysis rate.

Lignocellulose represents a key sustainable source of biomass for transformation into biofuels and bio-based products. Unfortunately, lignocellulosic biomass is highly recalcitrant to biotransformation, both microbial and enzymatic, which limits its use and prevents. As a result, effective pretreatment strategies are necessary. The vast majority of pretreatment strategies have focused on achieving a reduction of lignin content. In this work, an ethanosolv pretreatment has been evaluated for extracting lignin from barley straw. 75% ethanol was used as a pretreatment solvent to extract lignin from barley straw. The influence on delignification of three independent variables are temperature, time, catalyst (1 M $H_2SO_4$) dose. The best pretreatment condition observed was $180^{\circ}C$, 120 min, 0.2% $H_2SO_4$ and delignification was 38%. A combined roasting and ethanosolv, 2-step pretreatment, was developed in order to improve the delignification. Roasting didn't increase the delignification but reduced the pretreatment time. X-ray diffraction results indicated that these physical changes enhance the enzymatic digestibility in the ethanosolv treated barley straw. The cellulose in the pretreated barley straw becomes more crystalline without undergoing ethanosolv.
Crude protein (CP) content of mechanically ground rice straw into small particles by an electric grinder and reducing value (RV) and soluble protein (SP) in the culture filtrate were lower than that of the chopped straw into $5{\sim}6\;cm$ lengths when both ground and chopped straws were fermented with Aspergillus ochraceus, A. terreus or Trichoderma koningii, at steady conditions. The reduction rate of RV, SP and CP was 22.2, 2.4, 7.3%; 9.1, 4.9, 8.5% or 0.0, 0.0, 3.6% for the three fungi, respectively. Chemical pretreatment of straw by soaking in $NH_{4}OH$ for a day caused significant increase in CP of the fermented straw than the other alkali and acidic pretreatments. Gamma irradiation pretreatment of dry and wet straw with water, specially at higher doses, 100, 200 or 500 kGy, caused significant increase in RV and SP as CP in the fermented straw by any of these fungi. Chemical-physical combination pretreatment of rice straw reduced the applied dose of gamma irradiation required for increasing fermentable ability of fungi from 500 kGy to 10 kGy with approximately the same results. Significant increases in RV and SP of fermented straw generally occurred as the dose of gamma irradiation for pretreated straw, which combined with $NH_{4}OH$, gradually rose. Whereas, the increase percentage in CP of fermented straw that was pretreated by $NH_{4}OH-10\;kGy$ was 12.4%, 15.4% or 8.6% for A. ochraceus, A. terreus or T. koningii, respectively.
The objective of this study was to understand the conversion characteristics of glucose and xylose using the major monosaccharide standards for lignocellulosic biomass. The acid-catalyzed organosolv pretreatment conducted using ethanol was significantly different from the acid-catalyzed process conducted in an aqueous medium. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), levulinic acid and furfural were produced from glucose conversion. The maximum yield of 5-HMF was 5.5%, at 200℃, when 0.5% sulfuric acid was used. The maximum yield of levulinic acid was 21.5%, at 220℃, when 1.0% sulfuric acid was used. Furfural was produced from xylose conversion and under 0.5% sulfuric acid, furfural reached the maximum yield 48.5% at 210℃. Ethyl levulinate and methyl levulinate were also formed from the glucose standard following the esterification reaction conducted under conditions of the combined conversion method, which proceeded under both ethanol-rich and water-rich conditions.
Background: Recent studies have revealed a prognostic impact of the MPV (mean platelet volume)/platelet count ratio in terms of survival in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. However, there has been no direct analysis of the survival impact of MPV in patients with mCRC. The aim of the study is to evaluate the pretreatment MPV of patients with metastatic and non-metastatic colorectal cancer (non-mCRC) and also the prognostic significance of pretreatment MPV to progression in mCRC patients treated with bevacizumab-combined chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: Fifty-three metastatic and ninety-five non-metastatic colorectal cancer patients were included into the study. Data on sex, age, lymph node status, MPV, platelet and platecrit (PCT) levels were obtained retrospectively from the patient medical records. Results: The MPV was significantly higher in the patients with mCRC compared to those with non-mCRC ($7.895{\pm}1.060$ versus $7.322{\pm}1.136$, p=0.013). The benefit of bevacizumab on PFS was significantly greater among the patients with low MPV than those with high MPV. The hazard ratio (HR) of disease progression was 0.41 (95%CI, 0.174-0.986; p=0.04). In conclusion, despite the retrospective design and small sample size, MPV can be considered a prognostic factor for mCRC patients treated with bevacizumab-combined chemotherapy.
In this study, the combined forces of electro-osmosis and compression were applied to cabbage dewatering and their effects were discussed. Nine treatments of combined forces consisting of three levels of voltage and compression were applied to chopped and macerated chinese cabbage placed in the experimental set-up consisted of cylinder-piston. The results showed that as both voltage and pressure increased the dewatering rates increased and the combined force of voltage and compression was a very effective means in the dewatering of chinese cabbage in which the largest dewatering rate difference, 72%, was found between the combined force of 30V with 68.2kPa and no voltage(0V) with 68.2kPa. However, no significant difference was found between the voltage of 0 and 10volts in 9.75kPa and the pressure of 68.2kP and 126.7kPa in 30volts. The maximum and minimum dewatering rate were 82% in the combined force of 30 volts of 126.7kPa and 8% in 0 volt of 9.75kPa, respectively. Within the experimental trials, it appeared that the best treatment combination would be pressure of 68.2kPa and voltage of 30V producing dewatering rate of 80ft in which the produced liquid contained about 1% solid. Employing this dewatering method as a pretreatment before drying process can contribute in considerable energy saving in agricultural wastes treatment.
In an attempt to investigate the effect of Beekeumsan on the hemostatic action and isolated uterine muscle, Beekeumsan was administered orally and the bleeding time in mouse tail, prothrombin time in vitro were estimated. Its activity on the isolated uterine muscle in rats were investigated. The following results were obtained; The bleeding time was not shortened, but the plasma prothrombin time in vitro was significantly shortened. The uterotonic action produced by the Beekeumsan was not inhibited by pretreatment of atropine, but was slightly inhibited by cyproheptadine and completely inhibited by pretreatment of diltiazem.

This study analyzed the basic characteristics of mortar using CGS modified by pretreatment. As a result of the analysis, it was found that CGS after reforming can be partially replaced with fine aggregates to solve the existing air volume reduction problem when used, and can contribute positively in terms of securing fluidity and improving strength. Therefore, it is considered necessary to verify as a functional material of CGS through concrete durability experiments as a future task.

This study was conducted to investigate the mechanism of protective effect by sodium selenite in methylmercuric chloride neurotoxicity, increasing intracellular $Ca^{2+}$concentration of the neuron. Methylmercuric chloride of 3mg/kg of body weight was administered simultaneously with sodium selenite of 5mg/kg and pretreatment of sodium selenite via intraperitoneal injection to rats. Also, effect of methylmercuric chloride($25{\mu}M,\;50{\mu}M,\;100{\mu}M$) and sodium selenite($200{\mu}M$) on free intrasynaptosomal $Ca^{2+}$ concentration were studied using the fluorescent $Ca^{2+}$ indicator fura -2 in vitro. After the treatment, at 6, 24, and 48 hours later, mercury in the cerebral cortex, liver and kidney tissues, succlnic dehydrogenase activities, adenosin-5'-triphosphate concentration, acetylcholinesterase activities, and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the cerebral cortex were determined in vivo. Cerebral synaptosomes of rats were incubated with methylmercuric chloride and sodium selenite in Hepes buffer for 10 minutes and free intrasynaptosomal $Ca^{2+}$ concentration were measured with fura-2 in vitro. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The combined administration of $CH_3HgCl$ and $Na_2SeO_3$ and pretreatment of $Na_2SeO_3$ according to time significantly more increased in the cerebral cortex and decreased in the liver, kidney mercury concentrations compared to the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. 2. The combined administration of $CH_3HgCl$ and $Na_2SeO_3$ and pretreatment of $Na_2SeO_3$ increased more succinic dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase activities compared to the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. Particularly pretreatment of $Na_2SeO_3$ significantly more compared to the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. The concentration of adenosine-5'-triphosphate in $Na_2SeO_3$ treatment groups revealed a favourable effect compared to the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. 3. Intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only was increased significantly more than control group in all test hours but was increased significantly more at 48 hours only after treatment in combined administration of $CH_3HgCl$ and $Na_2SeO_3$ and pretreatment of $Na_2SeO_3$ according to time interval more decreased significantly intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration compared to the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. 4. Free intrasynaptosomal $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the combined administration of $CH_3HgCl$ and $Na_2SeO_3$ was decreased ($24%{\sim}40%$) significantly more than the administration of $CH_3HgCl$ only. From the above results, the specific dosage of $Na_2SeO_3$ decreased increment of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration induced by administration of $CH_3HgCl$. These findings suggest the protective mechanism of $Na_2SeO_3$ on the neurotoxicity of $CH_3HgCl$.
