In this study, compared two distinct estimation methods (stress charts and regression equations) proposed by the Indian road congress design guideline (IRC:58-2015) to determine flexural stress in Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP). The occurrence of critical flexural stresses in pavement slabs is due to the combined effects of wheel loads and temperature. These stresses depend on various factors such as material properties of concrete, soil-subgrade strength, loading, and geometric properties of the slab. In order to account for the practical variability of these factors, critical edge stresses are determined using both methods and compared considering tied concrete shoulder. IRC:58 (2015) suggests, the stresses calculated by both the procedures should provide the same results. However, when these stresses are compared for the same configurations and same loading conditions, large variations are observed. The effect of tied concrete shoulder on reduction in critical edge stress is observed. Based on the study, certain important conclusions and recommendations are presented.
Two different MFC designs were evaluated in batch mode: single compartment combined membrane-electrodes (SCME) design and twin-compartment brush-type anode electrodes (TBE) design (single chamber with two air cathodes and brush anodes at each side of the reactor). In SCME MFC, carbon anode and cathode electrodes were assembled with a proton exchange membrane (PEM). TBE MFC was consisted of brush-type anode and carbon cloth cathode electrodes without the PEM. A brush-type anode was fabricated with carbon fibers and was placed close to the cathode electrode to reduce the internal resistance. Substrates used in this study were glucose, leachate from cattle manure, or sucrose at different concentrations with phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of 200 mM to increase the conductivity thereby reduce the internal resistance. Hydrogen generating bacteria (HGB) were only inoculated in TBE MFC. The peak power densities ($P_{peak}$) produced from the SCME systems fed with glucose and leachate were 18.8 and $28.7mW/m^2$ at external loads of 1000 ohms, respectively. And the $P_{peak}$ produced from TBE MFC were 40.1 and $18.3mW/m^2$ at sucrose concentration of 5 g/L and external loads of 470 ohms, with a mediator (2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone) and without the mediator, respectively. The maximum power density ($P_{max}$) produced from mediator present TBE MFC was $115.3mW/m^2$ at 47 ohms of an external resistor.
In high capacity and long haul optical communication systems, signal distortion is induced by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects of optical fibers. Dispersion management (DM) combining with mid-spans spectral inversion (MSSI) is one of the various techniques for overcoming this drawback. The most simple configuration of DM link is obtained by uniformly distributing the lengths of single mode fiber (SMF) and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) over whole fiber spans consisted of optical link. In this paper, the system performances in the uniformly distributed DM link combined with MSSI are assessed as a function of the number of fiber spans, because the system performances in this configuration are used as the significant performance criterion in other link configurations, such as the artificial distribution or the random distribution of SMF lengths and RDPS.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is one of the field-responsive fluids that is of interest to many researchers due to its high yield stress value, which depends on the magnetic field strength. Similar to electrorheological (ER) fluid, the combination of working modes is one of the techniques to increase the performance of the fluids with limited focus on MR fluids. In this paper, a novel MR testing cell incorporated with valve, shear and squeeze operational modes is designed and constructed in order to investigate the behaviour of MR fluid in combined mode. The magnetic field distribution in the design concept was analyzed using finite element method in order to verify the effective areas of each mode have the acceptable range of flux density. The annular gap of valve and shear were fixed at 1 mm, while the squeeze gap between the parallel circular surfaces was varied up to 20 mm. Three different coil configurations, which were made up from 23 SWG copper wires were set up in the MR cell. The simulation results indicated that the magnetic field distributed in the squeeze gap was the highest among the other gaps with all coils were subjected to a constant applied current of 1 A. Moreover, the magnetic flux densities in all gaps were in a good range of magnitude based on the simulations that validated the proposed design concept. Hence, the 3D model of the MR testing cell was designed using Solidworks for manufacturing processes.

Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are widely used as surge protectors for communication applications due to their small internal capacitance. In these days, however, they are mostly used in combined configurations, because the sparkover voltage required to initiate the discharge process in the GDTs and the time taken for arc formation process can be large enough to damage to sensitive circuits. For GDTs with a considerably high initial residual voltage, we should limit the peak voltage using a TVS or filter. We made a hybrid SPD circuits of common-mode type and differential-mode type with the filter using common-mode choke. Also, we applied lightning impulse voltage and ring wave voltage which frequency bandwidth are different each other and verified the characteristics of hybrid SPD circuits according to waveshapes. We describe how the applied SPDs operate in protection process steps with the actual data obtained from the residual voltage measurement at each step. The experiment results show that the surge voltage reduction with the choke coil is more effective in differential-mode circuit than in common-mode circuit.

Course correction munition is a smart projectile which improves its accuracy by the control mechanism equipped in the fuze section with canard. In this paper, various aerodynamic configurations of the fuze section were analysed by utilizing a semi-empirical method and a CFD method. A final canard configuration showing the least drag was then determined. During the CFD simulation, it was found that the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model combined with O-type grid base is suitable for the prediction of the base drag. Finally, the aerodynamic characteristics of the smart munition and the change of drag due to the canard installation were analysed.

A simple Crocco's $n-{\tau}$ time delay model and linear analysis of fluid flow coupled with acoustics are combined to investigate the high frequency combustion instability in the combustion chamber of LOX/hydrocarbon engines. The partial differential equation of the velocity potential is separated into ordinary differential equations, and eigenvalues that correspond to tangential resonance modes in the cylindrical chamber are determined. A general solution is obtained by solving the differential equation in the axial direction, and boundary conditions at the injector face and nozzle entrance are applied in order to calculate the chamber admittance. Frequency analysis of the transfer function is used to evaluate the stability of system. Stability margin is determined from the system gain and phase angle for the desired frequency range of 1T mode. The chamber model with variable baffle length and configurations are also considered in order to enhance the 1T mode stability of the combustion chamber.
A 16-views 3 dimensional imaging system is designed by spatially combinding two 8-views time multiplexed image channels. Each 8-views channel composed of 3 primary color CRTs and a dichroic beam splitter which combining the three CRTs as one channel. Each CRT displays 8-view images time sequentially. These images are projected to a holographic screen of a size 1$\times$0.8 $m^2$ through a projection optics. Characteristics of the three different configurations of projection optics are examined with the optics designing program "DEMOS" to select an optimized projection optics for the system. The configulation of the optimized projection optics is found like following; images from each channel combined by two-fold mirror are projected by a projection objective through a 16-strips LCD shutter. In this configuration, the shutter should be located at the entrance pupil of the objective, and the folded edge of the two-fold mirror should contact symmetrically to the center line of the shutter.e shutter.
In this paper, we described the aeroelastic full-bridge model tests that were conducted to investigate the effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures for thecable-stayed bridge during construction to ensure aerodynamic stability in the event of a typhoon or similar disasters. The effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures was investigated through various configurations on two cable-stayed bridges with a main span of 475 m and 230 m, respectively. To investigate the bridge's aerodynamic behaviour and dynamic wind force during construction, the deflections at the end of the cantilever, the accelerations atthe top of the pylon and the moments at the lower part of the pylon were measured. As the result, the system with two sets of vertical cables per cantilever seemed to be the overall most effective solution, but the system with single vertical cable may also work. The combined system using the caisson support and vertical cables and the system with two sets of inclined cables per cantilever on the same anchor block may also be a solution. The inclined cables from the caisson to the girder were effective for some early stages of erecting the deck.

A vacuum freeze drying experiment of skim milk solution in a cylindrical container is conducted to investigate the multi-dimensional drying characteristics of the process during the primary drying stage. Temperature histories at several positions are measured under the same process condition that is carefully controlled. Then the measured temperature histories at different positions are combined to produce instantaneous temperature distribution fields inside the cylindrical container. Along with the temperature measurement, the mass reduction history of the skim milk solution is also measured. From the measured temperature distribution curved configurations of sublimation interfaces and 2-dimensional heat transfer is inferred. The freeze drying under the present experimental setup is simulated with a calculation program that is based on a finite volume method with a moving grid system. Good agreements between the numerical and experimental results are observed. The present experimental results and the numerical approaches can be useful information in developing the analysis tools for practical vacuum freeze drying processes.
