  • The finite element stress analysis of large sized rectangular water tank structures made of stainless steel materials is carried out for various combined load cases. The combined load cases for a large size of 5,000ton are further determined using the specification(KS B6283) established from the Korean Standards Association. The changed water capacity due to the size of reservoirs could be heavily dependent for evaluating seismic effects, especially for large reservoirs. For the better numerical efficiency, the rectangular panels are modelled using the ANSYS ADPL module. The numerical results obtained for different load cases mainly show the effect of the interactions between the different load combination and other various parameters, for example, the water capacity, and different stainless steel materials. The structural performance for various load combinations is also evaluated.

In order to resist the snow load, it takes the influence of the gap than the size of the column. Also, in order to resist the water pressure, it shall increase the thickness of the wall. But, increasing the thickness of the wall is considerably less economical. Therefore, the angle with big thickness should be placed right next to the wall.

  • Highly curved steel-box bridges are usually constructed as ramp structures for the highway interchange and metropolitan elevated highway junction, but a number of these bridges are deteriorated and damaged to a significant degree due to heavy traffic. The main objective of the study is to develop a practical reliability-based assessment of safety and residual load carrying-capacity of existing curved steel-box ramp bridges. In the paper, for the realistic assessment of safety and residual load carrying-capacity of deteriorated and/or damaged curved steel-box bridges, an interactive non-linear limit state model is formulated based on the von Mises's combined stress yield criterion. It is demonstrated that the proposed model is effective for the assessment of reliability-based safety and the evaluation of residual load carrying-capacity of curved steel-box bridges. In addition, this study comparatively shows the applicability of various reliability analysis methods, and suggests a practical and effective one to be used in practice.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the load carrying capacity and consolidation behavior of suction piles. Three dimensional numerical models which reflect realistic ground conditions and installation procedures including the ground-suction pile interface were adopted to conduct a parametric study on variables such as the length-diameter ratio and the loading configurations, i.e, vertical, horizontal, and combined loads. The results indicated that the load carrying capacity of a suction pile can only be realistically obtained when the interface behavior between the suction pile and the ground is correctly modeled. Also carried out was the stress-pore pressure coupled analysis to investigate the consolidation behavior of the suction pile after the application of a vertical loading. Based on the results, failure envelops and associated equations were developed, which can be used to estimate load carrying capacity of suction piles installed in similar conditions considered in this study. The results of consolidation analysis based on the stress-pore pressure coupled analysis indicate that no significant excess pore pressure and associated consolidation settlement occur for the loading configuration considered in part due to the load transfer mechanism of the suction pile.

  • This study examined the effects of the minimum horizontal load on the structural behaviors and safety of system supports. The minimum horizontal load was frequently ignored in the design of system supports even though the level of that load was specified in the code and guide in Korea such as 'Standard Specification in Temporary Construction' and 'Guide to Installation of Shores for a Concrete Bridge'. To examine the effects of considering the minimum horizontal load, the finite element analysis were performed for various system supports. By varying installing parameters of system supports such as the vertical member spacing, the installation height, and the thickness of slab, the maximum combined stress ratios were estimated to investigate the structural safety of system supports. The results showed similar axial stress in vertical members but an increase in bending stress with a consideration of the horizontal load. The combines stress ratios are remarkably increased due to the consideration of the horizontal load. Consequently, the system supports, which were initially estimated to be safe when only the vertical loads were considered, were changed to be unsafe in most cases by the effects of the both the vertical and horizontal stresses. Therefore, the minimum horizontal load following the code and the guide is an essential load that could control the structural safety of system supports.

  • The strength of aluminum 7075 and carbon composite hybrid joints was studied for adhesive, bolt, and the adhesive-bolt combined joints. Several hybrid joint specimens were tested to get the failure load and modes for three types of the joints. Adhesive Cytec EA9394S was used for aluminum and carbon bonding. Failure load of the adhesive-bolt combined joint was 94 % of the sum of the failure load of the separately bonded and bolted joints. Hybrid joint also showed more stable failure behavior than the simple adhesive or bolted joint.

  • The mechanical stress due to the wheel-rail contact and thermal stress due to the drag braking increase the incidence of wheel failure. So, firstly, stress analyses(mechanical, thermal and combined stress) of wheel plate are performed using 3-dimensional finite element method(FEM). Secondly, the optimum design of wheel plate ;s investigated in order to reduce weight of the wheel based on results of stress analysis. The optimum design is peformed using 2-dimensional axisymmetric F.E. model and its results are verified by 3-dimensional F. E. model.

  • The effect of initial combined load on the lateral free vibration of arches is investigated. For the analysis, P-M interaction curves for the arches are obtained. The arches are circular arches which have constant cross-section and simply supported. Also, the arches are subjected both radial uniform distributed load which results in an axial compression on the cross-section and end moments that cause uniform bending action at the same time. All analysis are performed by finite element method based on Kang and Yoo's curved beam theory.

  • In this paper, the structural integrity and fatigue strength for the bogie frame of Monorail being developed in domestic was evaluated. Presently, the standard of evaluation for the bogie frame of monorail was not regulated. Therefore, the evaluation of the structural integrity and fatigue strength for the bogie frame was performed on the basis of the UIC 615-4 standard. The structural integrity of the designed bogie frame was evaluated by displacement and Von-Mises stress under each load conditions. And the fatigue strength was evaluated by combined main in-service load conditions specified at UIC 615-4 standard and it was compared with result of fatigue analysis using winLIFE v3.1 with the function of batch processing. The results shows that the structural integrity and fatigue strength of the designed bogie frame was satisfied, and the fatigue analysis using batch processing was more effective than conventional fatigue analysis using combined load conditions.
