  • Pretreatment of cellulosic biomass is necessary before enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. Extrusion is a well established process in food industries and it can be used as a physicochemical treatment method for cellulosic biomass. Aqueous ammonia soaking treatment at mild temperatures ranging from 60 to $80^{\circ}C$ for longer reaction times has been used to preserve most of the cellulose and hemicellulose in the biomass. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of extrusion treatment on aqueous ammonia soaking method. Extrusion was performed with miscanthus sample conditioned to 2mm of particle size and 20% of moisture content at $200^{\circ}C$ of barrel temperature and 175rpm of screw speed. And then aqueous ammonia soaking was performed with 15%(w/w) ammonia solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 hours on the extruded and raw miscanthus samples respectively. In the combined extrusion-soaking treatment, most compositions removal occurred within 1~2 hours and on a basis of 1 hour soaking treatment values, cellulose was recovered about 85% and other compositions, including hemicellulose, are removed about 50% from extruded miscanthus sample. The combined extrusion-soaking treated and soaking only treated samples were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis using cellulase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase. The enzymatic digestibility value of combined extrusion-2 hours soaking treated sample was comparable to 12 hours soaking only treated sample. It means that extrusion treatment can shorten the conventional long reaction time of aqueous ammonia soaking. The findings suggest that the combination of extrusion and soaking is a promising pretreatment method to solve both problems for no lignin removal of extrusion and long reaction time of aqueous ammonia soaking.

  • The paper deals with an analysis of an extrusion process with a divided material flow in a combined radial - backward extrusion. The paper discusses the influences of tool geometry such as punch nose angle, relative gap height, die comer radius on material flow and surface expansion into can and flange region. To analyze the process, numerical simulations by the FEM and experiment, an Al alloy as a model material have been performed. Based on the results, the influence of design parameters on the distribution of divided material flow and surface expansion are obtained.

  • Effect of some process variables including area reduction, stroke advance, materials on the extrusion load, plastic flow and height ratio of upper to lower extruded parts in the cup-cup axisymmetric extrusion were experimentally investigated and analyzed. Deformed pattern is visualized by grid-marking technique using half-cut billets splitted. The influence of using split specimen and original specimen on the extrusion load and height ratio is examined by experiment.

  • Deformation characteristics and damage evolution during warm backward extrusion of bulk AZ31 Mg alloy were investigated using finite element analyses. AZ31 Mg alloy was assumed as a hardening viscoplastic material. The tensile tests of AZ31 Mg alloy in previous experimental works showed the ductile fracture even at the warm temperature of $175^{\circ}C$. In this study, damage evolution model proposed by Lee and Dawson, which was developed based on the growth of micro voids in hardening viscoplastic materials, was combined into DEFORM 2D. Effects of forming temperature, punch speed, extrusion ratio and size of work piece on formability in warm backward extrusion as well as on mechanical properties of extruded products were examined. In general, finite element predictions matched the experimental observations and supported the analyses based on experiments. Distributions of accumulated damage predicted by the finite element simulations were effective to identify the locations of possible fracture. Finally, it was concluded that the process model, DEFORM2D combined with Lee & Dawson#s damage evolution model, was effective for the analysis of warm backward extrusion of AZ31 Mg alloys.

  • This paper presents a study of cold combined forward-backward extrusion product. The case of product with thin wall in piercing process occur defects of deformation and breakdown during piercing process and the center web of product with thin thickness cause flow defect. Such defect is made by the difference of material flow. Methods of the material flow control in the two directions and forming process to remove this flow defect is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is examined by comparison experiment and finite element simulation.

  • It is important to predict forming procedure for minimizing trial-and-error in the application of cold forging of gears. In this study, 3-dimensional simulations of cold forging processes of spur and bevel gear were carried out using finite element method to investigate the characteristics of the processes. From the simulation result it was found that incomplete teeth forming of spur gear was occurred with increase of teeth number in forging by forward extrusion. It can be reduced through division of material flows at the initial forming state using forward/backward combined extrusion.

  • In this paper, the tube forming by radial-forward extrusion is analyzed by numerical simulation and experiments. The paper discusses the effect of process variables such as gap height, relative gap width and die comer radius on tube forming. The influence of deformation patterns of flange in radial extrusion on forward extrusion for tube forming is investigated and summarized in terms of the maximum forming force and hardness variations along the extrusion path. Furthermore the external defects are shown experimentally during the forming operation. Based on finite element analysis in conjunction with experimental test in Al alloy, analysis is performed for important parameter combination in order to reduce forming defects. Eventually, the process parameters for safe forming are suggested in order to reduce the forming defects.

  • In this study a new simplified three-dimensional numerical method and the associated computer program have been developed to simulate the non-axisymmetric extrusion processes. The two-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method under the generalized plane-strain condition is combined with the slab method. To define the die geometry for a non-axisymmetric extrusion. area mapping technique was used. Streamlined die surface was used to minimize the total extrusion pressure. Extrusion of square, hexagonal and 'T' section from round billet have been simulated and experimented with a model material. The computed results were in good agreement with the experiments in cross-sectional grid distortion. Computational results will be valuable for designing tool geometries and corresponding processes.
