This paper investigates linear soft combination schemes for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. We propose two weight-setting strategies under different basic optimality criteria to improve the overall sensing performance in the network. The corresponding optimal weights are derived, which are determined by the noise power levels and the received primary user signal energies of multiple cooperative secondary users in the network. However, to obtain the instantaneous measurement of these noise power levels and primary user signal energies with high accuracy is extremely challenging. It can even be infeasible in practical implementations under a low signal-to-noise ratio regime. We therefore propose reference data matrices to scavenge the indispensable information of primary user signal energies and noise power levels for setting the proposed combining weights adaptively by keeping records of the most recent spectrum observations. Analyses and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed linear soft combination schemes outperform the conventional maximal ratio combination and equal gain combination schemes and yield significant performance improvements in spectrum sensing.
The oligo(methylsilene) (1) was treated with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalysts and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, W) catalysts, producing the modified, cross-linked polymers. The average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yields of modified polymers increase as the catalyst goes down from Ti to Hf and similarly as the catalyst goes down from Cr to W. An interrelationship between average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yield is found within the respective group of catalysts, but is not observed as the catalyst goes down from Ti to W. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weights and similar percent ceramic residue yields as compared to the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts. The catalytic activities of group 4 metallocene combinations appear to be higher -100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls.
Manual lifting, as a part of manual materials handling activities, is recognized by authorities in the fields of occupational health and safety as a major hazards to industrial workers. In order to minimize the injuries caused by manual material handling activities as well as maximize job productivity, it is important to determine the maximum weights. This paper presents the optimal combination of membership functions according to the high lifting frequency and determines the safe maximum acceptable weights in manual lifting activities through the actual experiment.
Objectives : Anti-obesity drugs that have been developed so far have limited efficacies and considerable adverse effects affecting tolerability and safety. Therefore, most anti-obesity durgs have been withdrawn. We tried to develop anti-obesity agent by combinations from herbs that are used in food ingredients as well as in traditional medicines. Methods : The 80% (v/v) ethanol extracts from Bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescence) leaf (BL) and Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) and their 1:1 combination (BLSB) was evaluated on high fat diet induced obese mice compared to Omega-3 as a positive control. The mice were divided into six groups (n=5), one group fed a normal diet (ND), and the others fed a high fat diets for eight weeks. Two weeks after starting feeding the diets, the high fat diet groups were orally administered vehicle and Omega-3, BL, SB, and BLSB at dosage of 200 mg/kg/day for six weeks. All groups were assayed for body weights, food efficiency ratio, blood biochemistry parameters, and organic tissue weights. Results : BLSB group showed significant reductions in body weight gain and fat weights of liver and epididymal adipose tissue compared to BL or SB alone as well as control. Total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels significantly decreased, and HDL-cholesterol level increased. In liver tissue, macrovesicular steaotisis was remarkably improved and its fat cell size was also significantly decreased. Conclusions : These results suggested that a combination preparation of bamboo leaf and S. baicalensis has anti-obesity effect and have synergistic effect compared to bamboo leaf or S. baicalesis.

In industry, multihead automatic combination weighers are used to provide accurate weights at high speed. To minimize giveaway, greater accuracy is desired, especially for valuable products. This paper describes a combination algorithm based on bit operation. The combination method is simple and saves time, since only the elements to be considered for combination are generated. The total number of combinations from which the desired output weight is chosen can be increased by extending the combination from memory hoppers to include some weighing hoppers. For an eight-channel weigher, three or four combination elements are best. In addition to targeting approximately equal amounts of products in each channel, this study investigated other schemes. Simulation results show that schemes targeting combination elements with an unequal distribution of the output weight are more accurate. The most accurate scheme involves supplying products to all memory and weighing hoppers before commencing the combination operation. However, this scheme takes more time.
A conventional adaptive noise canceller (ANC) using LMS algorithm suffers from the misadjustment of adaptive filter weights due to the gradient-estimate noise by input speech signal at steady state. In this paper, an ANC is proposed which uses the combination of VSLMS (variable step size LMS) and SA (sign algorithm) to improve steady state performance and convergence rate. SA algorithm is applied in speech region to prevent the weights from perturbing by output speech of ANC and VSLMS algorithm is applied to improve convergence rate and channel tracking ability in silence region and adaptive transient region. In compute rsimulation, the performance of the proposed VSLMS-SA combination algorithm is much better than LMS algorithm and the algorithm, recently proposed by greenberg, with adaptation step-size parameter determine dby sum method in convergence rate, channel tracking and steady state performance.
In this paper, we propose a new convex combination weight rule for the cross decomposition method which is known to be one of the most reliable and promising strategies for the large scale optimization problems. It is called generalized cross decomposition, a modification of linear mean value cross decomposition for specially structured linear programming problems. This scheme puts more weights on the recent subproblem solutions other than the average. With this strategy, we are having more room for selecting convex combination weights depending on the problem structure and the convergence behavior, and then, we may choose a rule for either faster convergence for getting quick bounds or more accurate solution. Also, we can improve the slow end-tail behavior by using some combined rules. Also, we provide some computational test results that show the superiority of this strategy to the mean value cross decomposition in computational time and the quality of bounds.
Collaborative filtering has been most popular approach to recommend items in online recommender systems. However, collaborative filtering is known to suffer from data sparsity problem. As a simple way to overcome this problem in literature, Jaccard index has been adopted to combine with the existing similarity measures. We analyze performance of such combination in various data environments. We also find optimal weights of factors in the combination using a genetic algorithm to formulate a similarity measure. Furthermore, optimal weights are searched for each user independently, in order to reflect each user's different rating behavior. Performance of the resulting personalized similarity measure is examined using two datasets with different data characteristics. It presents overall superiority to previous measures in terms of recommendation and prediction qualities regardless of the characteristics of the data environment.
Human emotion recognition is one of the promising applications in the era of artificial super intelligence. Thus far, facial expression traits are considered to be the most widely used information cues for realizing automated emotion recognition. This paper proposes a novel facial expression recognition (FER) method that works well for recognizing emotion from image sequences. To this end, we develop the so-called weighted soft voting classification (WSVC) algorithm. In the proposed WSVC, a number of classifiers are first constructed using different and multiple feature representations. In next, multiple classifiers are used for generating the recognition result (namely, soft voting) of each face image within a face sequence, yielding multiple soft voting outputs. Finally, these soft voting outputs are combined through using a weighted combination to decide the emotion class (e.g., anger) of a given face sequence. The weights for combination are effectively determined by measuring the quality of each face image, namely "peak expression intensity" and "frontal-pose degree". To test the proposed WSVC, CK+ FER database was used to perform extensive and comparative experimentations. The feasibility of our WSVC algorithm has been successfully demonstrated by comparing recently developed FER algorithms.
Acetaminophen (APAP) and gentamicin are widely used for many patients, but little in-formation is available regarding the combined effects of APAP and gentamicin. This study was aimed to investigate the potent nephrotoxicity following combined-treatment with APAP and gentamicin. Serum biochemical parameters and histopathological changes in the kidney were observed in female SD rats after continuous daily treatment with either 600 mg/kg/day APAP, and/or 300 mg/kg/day gentamicin for 3 days, and compared with saline sham-treated control animals. APAP and gentamicin combination-treated rats exhibited inconsistent increasing tendency in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) by 96 hours after the last treatment, compared to control or the animals treated with each drug. The relative kidney weights were also increased. Histopathological findings of kidneys revealed that necrosis of proximal convoluted tubules were higher in rats treated with APAP and gentamicin combination than the rats treated with each drug alone. These results suggest that combination use of both drugs have more severe nephrotoxicity than treating each drug alone.
