  • Microstructure and electrical properties of $In_2O_3$ transparent thin films are analyzed on the basis of Structure Zone Model (SZM) proposed by Thornton. Thin films are deposited on glass substrate by RF magnetron sputtering with variation of substrate temperature $(T_s)$ and argon gas pressure $(P_{Ar})$. Microstructure of Zone I of SZM is observed with lowering of substrate temperature or increasing of argon pressure. The higher electrical resistivity of those specimens is due to micro-pores or voids between columnar grains. At the conditions of $T_s=450^{\circ}C$ and $P_{Ar}$=4.2mTorr, the Zone II structure of SZM and the lowest electrical resistivity $(2.1{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}cm)$ are observed. The dense structure of columnar grains with faceting on growing surface and preferred orientation of (100) plane are observed in those specimens.

  • A lava dome and sheet lava flow can be observed at the seashore of Aewol, Jeju island. The cylindrical lobes are characterized by a concentric structure consisting of a massive core and radial joints. Columnar joints with different thickness between the upper and lower parts are developed in the sheet lava flow around the rock salt field in Goeomri. The upper part of the columnar joints is uneven in shape, and has a diameter of 120-150 cm. The lower part of the columnar joints is hexagonal and pentagonal in shape, and has a diameter of about 60 cm. The cylindrical lobes can be divided into two groups based on size and shape. One is a megalobe, with a semicircular outline and a maximum diameter of 30 m. The other is a circular lobe with a diameter of less than 10 m. The columns in the radial joints have hexagonal and pentagonal cross sections and gradually increasing diameter, outward from the core, to a size of 80-120 cm at the rim. The concentric structure observed in the cylindrical lavas is attributable to a combination of four factors. The first is a circular crack caused by the decrease of the temperature and density difference between the inside and outside of the cylindrical lava flow. The second is a concentric chisel mark of the radial joints, which formed at the same time as the radial joints. The third is a flow band, which is a trace left in a round passage when lava flows through. The fourth is a vesicular band formed in a cave by gas bubbles escaping from the lava flow.

  • Cr-N films were deposited on low-carbon steel sheets by the reactive arc-induced ion plating (AIIP). The influence of the deposition conditions (nitrogen pressure and substrate bias voltage) on the crystal orientation, morphology and microhardness of the Cr-N films has been investigated using x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The impurities and contaminations on the surface and at the interface, and the layer-by-layer compositions of the film have been analyzed using scanning Auger multiprobe (SAM) and glow discharge spectroscope (GDS). The mixed state of Cr and Cr2N turned out to have a fine fibrous structure. The Cr2N films were deposited at a wide range of nitrogen flow rates. The orientations of Cr2N films were mainly (110) and (111), and the intensity of the (111) peak increased as the substrate bias voltage increased. The micorstructure of the Cr2N film was dense and no columnar structure was observed. The films in the mixed state of Cr2N and CrN were also dense without columnar structure. The maximum microhardness of the Cr-N films was 2400 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ at 10gf load.

  • Unidirectionally solidified TiAl alloys were prepared by optically-heated floating zone method at growth rates of 10 to 70 mm/h in flowing argon. The microstructures and tensile properties of these crystal bars were found to depend strongly on the growth rate and alloy composition. TiAl alloys with composition of 47 and 50 at.%Al grown under the condition of 10 mm/h showed $Ti_3Al({\alpha}_2)/TiAl({\gamma})$ layer structures similar to single crystals. As the growth rate increased, the alloys with 47 and 50 at.%Al compositions showed columnar-grain structures. However, the alloys fabricated under the condition of 10 mm/h had a layered structure, but the alloy with increased growth rate consisted of ${\gamma}$ single phase grains. The alloy with a 53 at.%Al composition showed a ${\gamma}$ single phase regardless of the growth rate. Room-temperature tensile tests of these alloys revealed that the columnar-grained material consisting of the layered structure showed a tensile ductility of larger than 4 % and relatively high strength. The high strength is caused by stress concentration at the grain boundaries; this enhances the secondary slip or deformation twinning across the layered structure in the vicinity of the grain boundaries, resulting in the appreciable ductility.

  • Dielectric thin films of PLT(28) ($(Pb_{0.72}La_{0.28})Ti_{0.93}O_3$) have been deposited on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrates in situ by a laser ablation. We have systematically changed the laser fluence from 0.4 J/$cm^2$ to 3 J/$cm^2$, and deposition temperature from $450^{\circ}C\; to\; 700^{\circ}C$. The surface morphology was changed from planar grain structure to columnar structure as the nucleation energy was increased. The PLT thin film with columnar structure showed good dielectric properties. The deposition temperature influenced on nucleation energy much stronger than the laser energy density did.

  • In this paper, we report the changes of morphology, transmittance and photoluminescence (PL) in hydrogenated amorphous $As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin films, thermally deposited at the vapor incidence angles (${\theta}$) of $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;80^{\circ}$. The hydrogenation was carried out under the condition of a $H_2$ pressure ($P_H$) of 20 atm and an annealing temperature range, $T_{Anneal}$ of $150^{\circ}C{\sim}210^{\circ}C$. A columnar structures with an inclination angle of approximately $65{\sim}70^{\circ}$ was formed in $80^{\circ}$-deposited films and then the columnar was broken after hydrogenation. Transmittance increases with an increase of deposition angle and by the hydrogenation. In particular, a broad PL band on the extended region is observed in obliquely deposited films and it increases during the hydrogenation.

  • In fast reactors, restructuring of the fuel micro-structure driven by high temperature and high temperature gradient can cause the formation of columnar grains. The non-spheroidal shape and the non-uniform temperature field in such columnar grains implies that standard models for fission gas diffusion can not be applied. To tackle this issue, we present a reduced order model for the fission gas diffusion process which is applicable in different geometries and with non-uniform temperature fields, maintaining a computational requirement in line with its application in fuel performance codes. This innovative application of reduced order models as meso-scale tools within fuel performance codes represents a first-of-a-kind achievement that can be extended beyond fission gas behaviour.

  • In an effort to protect a RBSC(reaction -bonded SiC) tube SiC films from methyltrichlorosilane(MTS) by low pressure chemical vapor deposition were deposited in hydrogen atmosphere on the RBSC(reaction-bonded SiC) substrates over a range of input gas ratio(${\alpha}=P_{H2}/P_{MTS}=Q_{H2}/Q_{MTS}$=1 to 10) and deposition temperatures(T=1050~1300$^{\circ}C$). At the temper-ature of 1250$^{\circ}C$ the growth rate of SiC films increased and then decreased with decreasing the input gas ratio. The microstructure of SiC films was changed from granular type structure exhibiting (111) preferred orientation in the high input gas ratios to faceted columnar grain structure showing (220) in the low input gas ratios. The similar microstructure change was obtained by increasing the deposition temperature. These results were closely related to a change of deposition mechanism. Double layer structure having granular type and faceted ciolumnar grain structure from the manipulation of mechanism. Double layer structure having granular type and faceted columnar grain structure from the manipulation of the input gas ratio without changing the deposition temperatue was successfully fabricated through in -site process.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the damage patterns and metal structure of 3 phase mold transformers collected from places where accidents have occurred. Compared to an oil-immersed transformer, a mold transformer has the advantage of requiring a smaller installation area and can be kept clean, while its disadvantages include the fact that abnormal symptoms of an accident are difficult to discover and its repair is impossible. The capacity of the mold transformers collected from places where accidents have occurred was 200kVA with primary voltages being F23,900V, R22,900V, 21,900V, 20,900V, 19,900V, etc., as well as secondary voltages being 380V, 220V, etc. It was found from the analysis on the diffusion of combustion in the damaged mold transformers that fire occurred first inside the U-phase primary winding and that carbonization and heat were diffused to V-phase and W-phase in V-pattern. In addition, from the analysis on the cross-sectional structure of the metal of the melted high voltage winding using a metallurgical microscope, it was found that the boundary surface, voids, and columnar structure were formed when an interlayer short-circuit had occurred Therefore, even though it is not possible to find the cause for the occurrence of an interlayer short-circuit at the inner side of the primary winding, it is thought that, due to the thermal energy generated when the short-circuit occurred, the heat source was diffused to the upper side and outside, causing a secondary accident.
