  • Gas-liquid bubble column reactors are extensively used in industrial processes. A detailed knowledge of bubble size distribution is needed for determining the mass transfer in gas-liquid film. Experimental data on bubble size distribution and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient($k_L$) were used to calculate the estimated time to saturation in bubble column reactor. Also, the gas flux was evaluated to the liquid-side mass transfer coefficient($k_L$) and solubility data for hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$) and chlorine($Cl_2$) absorption into water. Simulation results show that $H_2S$ absorption time to 50 % of saturation concentrations are 611 sec and 1,329 sec when bubble diameters are 0.5 mm and 4.5 mm, while absorbing 1 % $H_2S$ gas. In case of $Cl_2$, absorption time range 657 to 1,400 sec when bubble size range 0.5 mm to 4.5 mm, while absorbing 1 % $Cl_2$ gas. Calculated simulation results can be used in the design of emergency relief bubble reactors.

  • This study was accomplished using packed bed column reactors that contain nonsurface-modified polypropylene media and surface-modified media from hydrophobic surface property into hydrophilic property by ion beam irradiation. The objectives of this research was investigated the characteristics of organic compounds removal and microbe attachment from sewage of school cafeteria in these reactors. In 736.8 mg/L of the average inflow $COD_{Cr}$ concentration the reactors with and without surface modification showed 81.8% and 70.3% of average $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiencies, respectively, which proves the $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiency of surface-modified media reactor is higher than that of nonsurface-modified media reactor. After 90 days, there were maximum differences between modified system and non-modified system. In that time the maximum removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was 96.5% in modified system and was 85.2% in non-modified system that showed removal efficiency of surface-modified media system is 11.3% higher than that of nonsurface-modified media system. The average removal efficiency of SS was 80.4% for the surface modified system and 61.6% for the non-modified system under same condition. Also, the reactor of surface-modified media has advantage on microbe attachment and biofilm formation.

  • Bacterial degradation of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) was studied in column reactors under conditions approximating a fluidized bed system, with granular activated carbon (GAC) as a support matrix. A mixed bacterial culture of MCPA-degrading bacteria was used as an inoculum to develop a biofilm on GAC. Initially, adsorption of MCPA by GAC and blofilm formation on GAC were examined. MCPA degradation was evaluated with a batch and continuous mode of operation of the GAC fixed-film column reactors. In the batch operations, complete degradation of MCPA was achieved during the incubation period. Partial degradation of MCPA occurred in the continuous operations and MCPA degradation was dependent on the feeding rate of MCPA solution.

  • pH controlled batch reactor and bubble column reactors have been developed in this research. They were used to produce high concentration of GABA and to determine optimal pH for GABA production. Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was isolated from recombinant E. coli and used for GABA production from monosodium glutamate (MSG). pH control was inevitable because the pH increased with MSG consumption. GAD showed highest activity at acidic conditions at pH 5.5 but the optimal pH for GABA production was pH 6.0. When 1.5 mole of MSG was used as reactant, the 1.05 mole of GABA was produced after 10 hrs batch reaction. Using bubble column reactors, 80 % of MSG was converted to GABA for 6 hrs reaction and 1.2 mole of GABA was produced.

  • In this study, sulfate reduction reaction was used to increase the decomposition of organics, which is the most critical factor for the stabilization of a landfill site. Composite of sewage sludge, papers, and incineration ashes was used in the column. The experimental results indicated that out of 10 reactors, the reactors 3, 4, 8. and 9 showed higher organics (i.e., TOC) removal rate than that in the absence of sulfate. The organics removal rates (K) in R3 and R9 were 8.65e$\^$-4/d and 3.82e$\^$-4//d, respectively. The times to reach 10% of initial concentrations in R3 and R9 was 7.3 and 16.5 years, respectively, showing faster organics decomposition rates in these reactors.

  • Bubble column reactors are considered the reactor of choice for numerous applications including oxidation, hydrogenation, waste water treatment, and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. They are widely used in a variety of industrial applications for carrying out gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid reactions. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used for predicting the gas holdup and its distribution along radial and axial direction are presented. Gas holdup increases linearly with increase in gas velocity. Gas bubbles tends to concentrate more towards the center of the column and follows a wavy path.

  • A suitable culture method and bioreactor type for itaconic acid production were chosen by comparing the maximal concentration of itaconic acid produced in various systems. In batch culture, the maximal concentration of itaconic acid produced in a bubble column reactor was about 5% greater than that produced in stirred-tank or external-loop airlift reactor. These results were thought to be due to lower shear force and higher mass transfer efficiency in a bubble column reactor in comparison with other reactors. Moreover, the fed-batch mode in a bubble column was found to be a suitable one, producing about 25% higher concentration of itaconic acid compared to batch mode.

  • FeS, as a natural reduced iron mineral, has been recognized to be a viable reactive material for As(III) sequestration in natural and engineered systems. In this study, FeS-coated sand packed columns were tested to evaluate the As(III) removal capacities under anaerobic conditions at pH 5, 7 and 9. The column obtained As(III) removal capacity was then compared with the capacity result obtained from batch reactors. In the comparison, two different approaches were used. The first approach was used the total As(III) removal capacity which method was proved to be useful for interpreting pH 5 system. The second approach was used to consider sorption non-linearity and proved to be useful for interpreting the pH 9. The results demonstrated that a mechanistic understanding of the different removal processes at different pH conditions is important to interpret the column experimental results. At pH 5, where the precipitation of arsenic sulfide plays the major role in the removal of arsenic, the column shows a greater removal efficiency than the batch system due to the continuous dissolution of sulfide and precipitation of arsenic sulfide. At pH 9, where adsorption mainly governs the arsenic removal, the sorption nonlinearity should be considered in the estimation of the column capacity. This study highlighted the importance of understanding reaction mechanism to predict column performance using batch-obtained experimental results.

  • For the efficient production of 2, 5-diketo-gluconic acid (2, 5-DKG) by the immobilized cells of Erwinia herbicola, basic characteristics of 2, 5-DKG fermentation were analyzed and a process employing immobilized cell reactor was developed. The immobilized cells appeared to have diffusion limitation, and a maximum production of 2, 5-DKG was accomplished with 2 mm diameters of immobilized beads. Long-term stabilities of the immobilized cells could be maintained by addition of 1.75% (w/v) polypep- tone. Repeated batch fermentations with about 80 mol% of 2, 5-DKG yields were carried out six times in the fluidized bubble column reactors filled with immobilized cells at an aeration rate of 6 vvm.
