The ingestion of corrosive substances often leads to severe morbidity and mortality. Acids produce coagulation necrosis with a lesser degree of penetration, whereas alkalis produce liquefactive necrosis with penetration. Acetic acid is a clear, colorless organic acid with a pungent, vinegar-like odor. The ingestion of highly concentrated acetic acid (glacial acetic acid) may cause a range of complications. On the other hand, perforation of the stomach is extremely rare but it has a high mortality rate. This paper reports a case of perforation of the stomach after the ingestion of glacial acetic acid with suicidal intent in an otherwise healthy 76-year-old woman.
This paper reports the preparation of an ink-jet printed flexible electrochromic device based on a water-soluble viologen-functionalized dendrimer. Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were modified with different concentrations of 1-1 bis(propylamine)-4,4'-bipyridylium dibromides to obtain solution-processable electrochromic materials (K1/2 and K1). FTIR, NMR, and elemental analyses are used to characterize synthesized viologens. Moreover, their electrochemical properties were investigated using cyclic voltammetry in an electrolyte solution consisting of 0.1 M HCl to find the optimum viologens. The low-cost ink-jet printer was used to print the prepared water-soluble electrochromic inks onto the ITO coated PET substrate to form desired transparent patterns. The electrolyte was applied on the printed electrochromic ink to make a sandwich with another ITO coated PET to prepare the electrochromic devices (ECD). By applying an electrical potential (0 to -2 V), the transparent ECD's color changed from colorless to blue. The color changes for the optimum ECD (K1), which had more viologen units on the dendrimer, was accompanied by an optical contrast of 47% and 311.5 ㎠C-1 coloration efficiency at 600 nm.
A novel binding site for metal ion made by designing molecule with tetrazolo quinoline with hydrazine carboxamide (TQC) and the designed molecule successfully synthesized. The probe works by selectively detecting Al3+ ion via both fluorimetric and colorimetric approach. The probe's effectiveness towards aluminium ion detection is highly sensitive and selective with no substantial interference with other competing ions. The added Al3+ ion to TQC fetched a rapid change of visual color to yellow from colorless, also the response of fluorescence turn-on. The fluorescence turn-on and color change visibly by the probe TQC with Al3+ ion credited to the ICT phenomenon (intramolecular charge-transfer transition). The likely interaction of the probe with aluminium ion has also been there predicted from ESI-MS spectral analysis results. The usefulness of the probe confirmed by practical utility by making a test kit to monitor Al3+ ion in water which showed a naked eye detection by notable color change.
Cyanobacteria are the dominant micro flora in rice-fields, contributing significantly to fertility as a natural biofertilizer. Recent studies show a continuous depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, and the consequent increase in solar UV-B (280-315 nm) radiation reaching the Earth's surface. UV-B radiation causes reduction in growth, survival, protein content, heterocyst frequency and fixation of carbon and nitrogen in many cyanobacteria. UV -B induced bleaching of pigments, disassembly of phycobilisomal complexes, thymine dimer formation and alterations in membrane permeability have also been encounterd in a number of cyanobacteria. However, certain cyanobacteria produce photoprotective compounds such as water soluble colorless mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and the lipid soluble yellow-brown colored sheath pigment, scytonemin, to counteract the damaging effects of UV-B. Cyanobacteria, such as Anabaena sp., Nostoc commune, Scytonema sp. and Lyngbya sp. were isolated from rice fields and other habitats in India and screened for the presence of photoprotective compounds. A circadian induction of the synthesis of MAAs by UV -B was noted in a number of cyanobacteria. Polychromatic action spectra for the induction of MAAs in Anabaena sp. and Nostoc commune also show the induction to be UV-B dependent peaking at 290 nm. Another photoprotective compound, scytonemin, with an absorption maximum at 386 nm (also absorbs at 300, 278, 252 and 212 nm), was detected in many cyanobacteria. In conclusion, a particular cyanobacterium having photoprotective compounds may be a potent candidate as biofertilizer for crop plants.
A severe outbreak of gray mold on kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was observed on kenaf grown in the research field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Jinju, Korea in 2014. Gray mold appeared on young plants as gray-brown velvety mold covering stems and leaves. Infections that girdled the stem caused wilting above the infected area and developed a canker. The casual fungus formed grayish brown colonies on potato dextrose agar. The conidia were one celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape, colorless or pale brown in color, and 6-18 × 4-10 ㎛ in size. The conidiophores were 15-32 ㎛ in length. These measurements and taxonomic characteristics were most similar to those of Botrytis. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the complete internal transcribed spacer rRNA gene region confirmed that the fungal isolates were indeed Borytis cinerea. Koch's postulates were supported by pathogenicity tests conducted on healthy plants. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a gray mold caused by B. cinerea on kenaf in Korea.
Acaricidal activity of the active constituent derived from Pyrus ussuriensis fruits against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus was examined and compared with that of the commercial benzyl benzoate. The $LD_{50}$ value of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the aqueous extract of P. ussuriensis fruits was 9.51 and $8.59{\mu}g/cm^3$ against D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus, respectively. The active constituent was identified as quinone by spectroscopic analyses. On the basis of $LD_{50}$ values with quinone and its congeners, the compound most toxic against D. farinae was quinone ($1.19{\mu}g/cm^3$), followed by quinaldine (1.46), benzyl benzoate (9.32), 4-quinolinol (86.55), quinine (89.16), and 2-quinolinol (91.13). Against D. pteronyssinus, these were quinone ($1.02{\mu}g/cm^3$), followed by quinaldine (1.29), benzyl benzoate (8.54), 4-quinolinol (78.63), quinine (82.33), and 2-quinolinol (86.24). These results indicate that the acaricidal activity of the aqueous extracts can be mostly attributed to quinone. Quinone was about 7.8 and 8.4 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate against D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus. Additionally, quinaldine was about 6.4 and 6.6 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate against D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus, respectively. Furthermore, the skin color of the dust mites was changed from colorless-transparent to dark brown-black by the treatment of quinone. These results indicate that quinone can be very useful as potential control agents, lead compounds, or the indicator of house dust mites.
Callus induction and somatic embryogenesis are fundamental to cotton tissue culture biotechnology. An efficient protocol for callus induction, somatic embryogenesis and their maturation have been developed to regenerate plantlets from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) variety coker 312. Embryogenic callus was initiated from hypo-cotyl region that was used as an explant at seedling stage when it was about 7-8 days old. Callus induction was achieved through culturing hypocotyls (5-7mm) on $MS_{1a} medium supplemented with 2,4-D (0.1 mg/L) and KT (0.5 mg/L) for six weeks. A friable, colorless, bulky and well proliferating callus becomes greenish with the addition of NAA (2.0 mg/L), ZT (0.1 mg/L) and removal of 2,4-D (M $S_{1b}$) cultured for two weeks then again transferred to $MS_{1a}. 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) promoted the proliferation of embryogenic callus, but had a negative effect on the differentiation and germination of somatic embryos. ZT (0.1mg/L) and activated charcoal (2g/L), both hormones play an important role in differentiation and germination of somatic embryos in hypocotyls derived embryogenic callus but in case of cotton, such a capability have been observed on MS medium with 1.92 g/L $KNO_3$, but it is considered to attain somewhat more improvement. High embryogenesis frequency was achieved through nutrient deficient stress treatment. The frequency of globular embryogenesis (two-three folds) was achieved when well proliferating callus was (from $MS_{1a}$ media) cultured on MS (1/5 strength) medium for four weeks. Here the development of anthocyanins is the best indicator for somatic embryogenesis. However, when embryoid callus was cultured on MS (full strength) medium, the globular embryos were developed into normal plantlets immediately. In this procedure 27.49% cotyledenary embryos were developed. Of that 70% cotyledenary embryos were developed not only into normal plantlets but rooted simultaneously, when cultured on MS (with 0.05 mgg/L giberrelic acid) medium. So complete plants could be regenerated through somatic embryogenesis from hypocotyl explants within 6 months.s.
This study is for the occurrence types of asbestos within 2 serpentinite mines, Baekdong and Kwangsi, Chungnam. They were exploited as serpentinite mines for several decades and closed in the 1980's. Asbestos with associated minerals were collected from the serpentinite bodies. They were examined with microscopes and FESEM, and analysed with EPMA, XRD and EDX to confirm for the types and/or compositions of the minerals. The serpentinites contain asbestos and nonasbestos minerals. Asbestos include chrysotile, tremolite and actinolite. The chrysotiles occur as veins of several mm to cm thickness with random directions. The tremolite and actinolite occur along cracks and fractures of several cm to ten cm thickness. They show mineralogical characteristics showing common asbestos under the microscope. Non-asbestos including chrysotile, lizardite, antigorite, tremolite and actinolite were also found within the serpentinite. The serpentines form pseudomorphic mesh textures, and also show hourglass or ribbon textures. The tremolite and actinolite were formed from the alterations of the pyroxenes and amphiboles, and plot between tremolite and magnesio hornblende. Tremolitic grains are colorless and occur as commonly elongated grains whereas the magnesio hornblende grains mainly show light green and occur as subhedral to euhedral grains. Overall results suggest that three types of asbestos are found in the Baekdong and Kwangsi serpentinite mines with varieties of the occurrences. Based on the occurrence types for the asbestos, additional studies are required for the asbestos of the top soil and the air.
3-Methylpentane ($C_6H_{14}$, CAS No. 96-14-0), isomer of hexane, is a colorless liquid originating naturally from petroleum or natural gas liquids. 3-Methylpentane has been used as a solvent in organic synthesis, as a lubricant, and as a raw material for producing carbon black. There is limited information available on the inhalation toxicity of 3-methylpentane, and the aim of this study was to determine its subacute inhalation toxicity. According to OECD Test Guideline 412 (subacute inhalation toxicity: 28-day study), Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 0, 284, 1,135, and 4,540 ppm of 3-methylpentane for 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks via whole-body inhalation. Mortality, clinical signs, body weights, food consumption, hematology, serum chemistry, organ weights, and gross and histopathological findings were compared between control and all exposure groups. No mortality or remarkable clinical signs were observed during the study. No gross or histopathological lesions, or adverse effects on body weight, food consumption, hematology, serum chemistry, and organ weights were observed in any male or female rats in all exposure groups, although some statistically significant changes were observed in food consumption, serum chemistry, and organ weights. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) for 3-methylpentane above 4,540 ppm/6 hr/day, 5 days/week for rats.
The Sin po fluorite deposit is of a fissure vein type which strikes $N75^{\circ}E$, dips $80^{\circ}SE$, and is embedded in the pre-Cambrian crystalline schist. The vein is 1 meter in average in thickness, about 800 meters in length and nearly 400 meters in depth. Narrow veins of crustified fluorites and agatic quartz are discontinuously embedded in the quartz gangue. Two-phase fluid inclusions, which are available for the homogenization method by using the Heating Stage Microscope 350, are found in the fluorite crystals. Most of the fluid inclusions are primary in origin and mainly composed of liquid phase associated with minor gas phase. They are tetrahedral, rounded-tubular, wedge shaped, rectangulartrapezoid, and irregular in shape. The maximum diameter of inclusions is 0.5mm and the minimum, 0.03mm, ranging from 0.2mm to 0.08mm in an average. The homogenization temperatures obtained from the test are $135-147^{\circ}C$, $125-138^{\circ}C$, $121-137^{\circ}C$, $116-133^{\circ}C$ and $106-128^{\circ}C$ in greenish, bluish, violet, light grayish blue, colorless and pinkish fluorites respectively. The range of formation temperatures of fluorites is $106-147^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the fluorite deposit of Sinpo Mine is considered to be of low temperature hydrothermal origin. The isothermal lines were drawn on the longitudinal section of the vein from the data of homogenization test. According to the results, the central and lower parts of the ore shoot in the west ore body show the higher temperatures of $130-138^{\circ}C$ and the peripheral and upper parts of it show the lower temperatures of $108-128^{\circ}C$. It seems that the isothermal trend roughly coinside with the pitch of the ore shoot.
