  • We have designed and synthesized the colorimetric chemosensor through the reactions of 1,2-anthraquinone and indol-3-carboxaldehyde. Due to its well conjugated D-${\pi}$-A system and the existence of NH-fragment in indole moiety, we expected that the chemosensor can detect target anions with NH-fragment in indole part of the structure. In this regard, UV-Vis absorption spectra were measured to investigate sensing properties of the probe toward different anions in DMSO. This chemosensor shows to detect fluoride anions with absorption change in intensity. These properties are mainly related to the deprotonation effect. ICT system in this molecule was also observed by the computational approach using Material Studio 4.3 package.

  • This work offers a promising approach for development of a temperature-responsive colorimetric display platform. For this purpose, uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) core and a thin polyurethane shell layer were fabricated by conducting in-situ condensation polymerization at the interface of monodisperse CLC-in-water emulsion drops. Colloidal packing-driven microcapsule registry led to exact 2-dimensional positioning of CLC microcapsules into a holes-patterned flexible film stencil. Furthermore, we showed that the designated registry of different color types of CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology capable of reversible text representation according to temperature change.

  • Rhodamine B Hydrazide as a novel fluorescent and colorimetric probe exhibiting remarkably selective fluorescence enhancement toward Hg2+ ion over other 16 metal ions is herein introduced. The probe reacts with Hg2+ ion followed by its spirolactam ring-opening to give a remarkable enhancement of absorption maximum at 550 nm as well as an enhanced fluorescence intensity at 580 nm in aqueous media. Upon titration with Hg2+ ion in various concentration of 10~200 uM, we found that the probe shows a marked color change from colorless to pink, enabling naked-eye detection toward mercury ion. In addition, in the presence of Hg2+ ion, the probe gave rise to change from non-florescence to strong orange fluorescence (Off-On) with a good linearity of R2=0.97. This preliminary results demonstrate that the fluorescent chemosensor we herein introduced can open a new strategy for marked selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions in contaminated soil containing various metal ions.

  • This research compares the change in berberine content in liquid dye and the color and dye uptake of amur cork tree dyed silk upon thermal degradation treatment. Thermal degradation of amur cork tree extract and liquid dye of standard berberine was carried out at room temperature, $4^{\circ}C$ refrigeration, and $100^{\circ}C$ oven conditions for 0-192 hours. Amur cork tree dyed silk was treated in a $100^{\circ}C$ oven for 0-240 hours. The berberine content in liquid dye was measured by the relative abundance of the berberine peak in the HPLC-MS chromatograms. The color and dye uptake of dyed silk was measured using K/S value and colorimetric data. The berberine content in standard berberine dye was 2.4 times that of the amur cork tree extract. A similar result was observed between the K/S value of standard berberine dyed silk and that of amur cork tree dyed silk. The berberine dyed silk showed the highest dye uptake after 120 hours in a $100^{\circ}C$ oven. This result was similar to the change in a berberine content in liquid dye in a $100^{\circ}C$ oven treatment. The change of the K/S value of amur cork tree dyed silk and berberine content of amur cork tree extract was similar up to 24 hours. The result suggests that there is a direct relationship between the color change of amur cork tree dyed silk and the berberine content in amur cork tree dye.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how effects creatine dosage has on the improvement of rowing athletes' performance ability. Rowing athletes were administered with creatine, through which to examine the change of athletic performance ability, blood fatigue substances, and muscular activity. The subjects (participants) of this Study consisted of 12 male rowing athletes at P University, with at least 5 years of rowing experiences, which divided into two groups - creatine dosing group of 6 persons and control group of 6 persons - for random sampling measurement. Enzymatic-colorimetric method using lacrate oxidase and 4-aminoantipyrine was performed for blood lactate level analysis, and wireless EMG system (QEMG-4: Lxtha Korea) for muscular activity analysis, with 4 channels set for data analysis. As body parts to be measured, two muscular parts - latissimus dorsi and lumbar spinel - were chosen. Then, on the 5th day from the date of administering them with creatine (that is, 4 days after dosing them with creatine), rowing movement with the highest level of activity was calculated as peak value, which was measured twice. The test data used for this Study were SPSS/PC 18.0, pre-movement and post-movement two-way ANOVA for repeated measurement for comparative analysis of each muscle, with significant level at .05. As a result, the change of blood lactate level was significantly higher in creatine dosing group than in non-dosing group (p<.05). As for the change of muscular activity, both latissimus dorsi and lumbar spinel showed a significantly higher change of muscle in creatine dosing group than in non-dosing group (p<.05 and p<.05, respectively).

  • Many studies on polydiacetylene(PDA) have been investigated to apply to chemical and biological sensors due to their unique optical properties of color change from blue to red and fluorescence change from non-fluorescence to red fluorescence. Especially, high sensitivity against specific molecules is very important to apply polydiacetylenes to various sensors. In this study, we examined the effect of sensitivity enhancement of 10,12-pentacosadynoic acid(PCDA) vesicles in detection ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin(CD) according to control of vesicle size by filters with different pore sizes and polymerization temperature. Colorimetric response(CR) was calculated using visible spectrometer. In order to investigate the effect of vesicle size on sensitivity of PDA vesicles, two PCDA vesicles were filtered without filtration and with 0.22 ${\mu}m$ filter. The two PCDA vesicles were polymerized at $25^{\circ}C$ and were incubated with ${\alpha}$-CD(5 mM) for 30 min. The CRs of the former and latter vesicles were 31.4% and 74.0%, respectively. Then, two PCDA vesicles filtered with 0.22 ${\mu}m$ filter were polymerized at $25^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ and were reacted with ${\alpha}$-CD(5 mM) for 30 min to examine the effect of polymerization temperature. The CRs of the former and latter vesicles were 74.0 and 99.2%, respectively. This suggests that vesicle sizes and polymerization temperature are key factors in enhancing the sensitivity of PDA vesicles. In addition, these results are expected to be useful to apply the PDA vesicles as biosensors to detect DNA, protein, and cells.

  • To enhance the nutritional quality of the Soboru bread, a dietary fibers extracted from Kombu was added into wheat flour in the amounts of 0, 1, 3, and 5% and the quality of the baked products was characterized. The inherent water holding capacity of the added dietary fibers raised weight of the bread while specific volume and density values were decreased at the same time. Increasing the amount of dietary fiber resulted in the decreased setback time of the raw materials in amylogram. The lower textural hardness of the dietary fiber-enriched bread after one-day storage at room temperature could be attributed to the retarded retrogradation of the starch. Darkened surface of the bread as indicated by the Hunter colorimetric values and the accompanied change in flavor did not significantly influence the sensory evaluation of the products. Judging from texture, taste and overall acceptability of the product, recommended substitution level for the dietary fiber in Soboru bread was 3% or less. Increased intake of the dietary fibers, accompained with more use of seaweed, was expected through the suggested functional bread.

  • The conventional methods for total residual chlorine such as iodometry and DPD colorimetric can cause secondary pollution due to additional agents, also have a wide error range. As for alternative, electrochemical method can measure TRC(Total residual chlorine), and is not required as additional agents, also very suitable for using the fields of ballast water because test time is relatively fast. Therefore, this study was investigated for changing charge by agitation, salt concentration, and temperature change. Charge showed differences based on changes of reduction peak with or without agitation. In contrast, TRC and charge were well correlated in constant agitation speed. As TRC and charge were analyzed with high correlations in constant salinity and temperature of ocean, thereby conductivity was firstly measured, and charge had high correlation for TRC in spite of changing salinity and temperature Pt electrode revealed high reliability ($r^2=0.960$) because it was rarely effected by TRC, On the other hand, Au electrode appeared inadequate ($r^2=0.767$) to use sensor in less than 1.0 ppm of TRC. For high accuracy and detection of TRC, Pt and Au electrodes for test time were, respectively, 14 and 22 seconds. As a result, Pt electrode was more valuable than Au electrode in terms of response time.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare color parameters of different fabrication method of Lava ceram powder, Lava DVS blocks, IPS e.max ceram and IPS e.max zirpress. Methods: The three available shades(A1, A2, A3.5) of Lava & Kavo zirconia blocks were examined. For each of three colors, three different thickness were tested, 5 times of measurement frequency. The measurements were made using a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere using the CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ colorimetric system. Results: Lava build-up group and Lava DVS group showed clinically perceived color difference, on the other hand IPS e.max build-up group and IPS e.max zirpress group did not show clinically perceived color difference to shade allowed on core. When the thickness of porcelain veneer increased from Lava and IPS e.max groups, color differences(${\Delta}E$) were decreased. Conclusion: All-ceramic system has color characteristics that clinicians have to consider when selecting materials. Also, manufacturers of different porcelain systems must make every effort to achieve color reproducibility.

  • 4-Methylsulfinyl-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC) found in the radish (Raphanus sativus L.), is a wellknown anticancer agent. In this study, the mechanisms of the MTBITC induction of cell apoptosis in human A549 lung cancer cells were investigated. Our PI staining results showed that MTBITC treatment significantly increased the apoptotic sub-G1 fraction in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanism of apoptosis induced by MTBITC was investigated by testing the change of mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}m$), the expression of mRNAs of apoptosis-related genes by RT-PCR, and the activities of caspase-3 and -9 by caspase colorimetric assay. MTBITC treatment decreased mitochondrial membrane potential by down-regulating the rate of Bcl-2/Bax and Bcl-xL/Bax, and activation of caspase-3 and -9. Therefore, mitochondrial pathway and Bcl-2 gene family could be involved in the mechanisms of A549 cell apoptosis induced by MTBITC.
