  • The discoloration of traditional paintings could be induced by various chemical reactions of inorganic pigments due to temperature, humidity, light and air pollution. In this study, we made artificial samples including azurite and malachite as inorganic pigments using the traditional method on hanji called 'Korean paper'and investigated the artificial aging process occurred by the interaction between pigments and environmental factors. It was found that the azurite was influenced by the humidity of weathering tests and the salt fog of salt spray tests according to XRD and TGA results. However, it was shown that the malachite was chemically changed by the ultraviolet radiation of weathering tests and UV radiation tests according to color difference and TGA results.

  • Nanosized rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) is used in inorganic pigments and cosmetics because of its high whiteness and duality. The high quality of the white pigments depends on their surface coating technique via the solgel process. SiO2 coatings are required to improve the dispersibility, UV-blocking, and whiteness of TiO2. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is an important coating precursor owing to its ability to control various thicknesses and densities. In addition, we use Na2SiO3 (sodium silicate) as a precursor because of its low cost. Compared to TEOS, which controls the pH using a basic catalyst, Na2SiO3 controls the pH using an acid catalyst, giving a uniform coating. The coating thickness of TiO2 is controlled using a surface modifier, cetrimonium bromide, which is used in various applications. The shape and thickness of the nanosized coating layer on TiO2 are analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and the SiO2 nanoparticle behavior in terms of the before-and-after size distribution is measured using a particle size analyzer. The color measurements of the SiO2 pigment are performed using UV-visible spectroscopy.

  • This study analyzes the , one of the three panels of 《Welcoming Banquets for the Governor of Pyeong-an》, a documentary painting of the late Joseon Dynasty, with the aim to identify the coloring materials used in the painting. The painting was first imaged at each wavelength in order to minimize the potential problems in the process of analyzing specific parts. This study applied X-rays to identify ink, gold, and organic and inorganic pigments and used infrared rays to find ink and copper-based pigments. It also applied hyperspectral imaging to distinguish organic pigments from black, blue, and green materials. It also analyzed spots selected for each color to identify the following materials: white lead (white), ink/indigo (black), a combination of red lead and cinnabar (red), pink dye, purple dye, iron oxides (brown), orpiment/dye (yellow), malachite/malachite and yellow dye/indigo (green), azurite/white lead and indigo/indigo (blue), indigo and cochineal (violet), and gold leaf (gold). It is expected that more efficient analysis will be made possible by securing a sufficient library for each wavelength.

  • It was intended to conduct basic research to reduce development lead time and cost consumed in DTP process technology development. For the simulation of HTPE fabric, virtual engineering software was used to generate fiber model, yarn model, fabric model, and finite element model of HTPE fiber. The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation and error rate between the stiffness numerical analysis results according to the direct DTP process parameters using reactive dyes in the generated finite element model and the stiffness measurements of the actual sample ac- cording to ASTM D1388. And, after dyeing the HTPE plain fabric according to the direct DTP process parameters, we want to analyze the dyeability of the HTPE fabric fabrics according to the direct DTP process parameters through the color fastness analysis. When looking at the results of the analysis of the finite element model, a higher value was shown when the distance between the nozzle and the fabric was 3mm than when the distance was 10mm. When the distance between the nozzle and the fabric was 10mm and 7mm, the reactive dye did not penetrate sufficiently, resulting in poor clarity when viewed with the naked eye.

  • We searched thermal stability of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ using red color filter for display. In the PDP(Plasma Display Panel), the color filter layer is lied normally between front glass and transparent dielectric materials, so it might be needed to study the reaction of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ and transparent dielectric materials. The transparent dielectric materials containing ZnO has good transparency. Red colorlayer of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ contacted with dielectric material layer containing ZnO is changed to colorlessness over 500$^{\circ}$C because ZnO defuse ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, the dielectric materials without ZnO, however, maintain red color at the same condition. We suggest that a layer contacting with ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ red color layer has to lie with transparent dielectric materials without ZnO, then the materials containing ZnO is coated over to get color of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ for red color filter

  • Bongchae is primarily employed for toning, which is the last step in the conservation treatment of paper's cultural properties. The objective of this study is to identify the coloring patterns of four types of Bongchae(Bonram, Gamboge, Yeonji, and Daeja) and determine the associated color change patterns through accelerated aging experiments. By examining the coloring patterns, it is observed that Yeonji, Bonram, and Daeja are painted as particles, whereas Gamboge indicates a close state of coating. Results obtained from X-ray diffraction analysis of Bongchae indicate that the presence of quartz, calcite, and pyrophyllite can be equally detected in Bonram, Yeonji, and Daeja. Additionally, the presence of goethite is also detected in Daeja. Gamboge becomes discolored from yellow to orange color during wet thermal aging, and Gamboge and Yeonji become decolorized during UV irradiation aging. Hence, cultural properties of paper colored with Gamboge can be predicted to become discolored to orange color by alkalis and can be darkened by UV rays because the decolorization of Gamboge and Yeonji occurs preferentially.

  • This paper is to investigate experimentally an effect of carbon amino silica black-superplasticizer(CASB-SP)on the engineering properties and chromaticity of black color concrete with 0.45 of W/C(water to cement). CASB-SP and carbon black were applied for pigment of the concrete. To prevent efflorescence of concrete, four different water repellent agents were also applied. As results, it was found that use of CASB-SP increased the slump and air contents. Furthermore, the use of CASB-SP increased the compressive strength. As CASB-SP dosages increased, chromaticity was well developed. For the effect of water repellent agent, the use of epoxy type was effective for protection from efflorescence. Based on test results, it was evaluated that 0.5% of CASB-SP effectively improve the concrete quality as well as enhance the chromaticity with proper dosage.

  • In this study, the effects of pre-converted nitrite from Swiss chard powder (PS) on the color stability and shelf-life of cooked pork patties during refrigerated storage for 28 d were investigated. Nitrite was added at a concentration of approximately 120 ppm. Five treatments were formulated as follows: Control (120 ppm nitrite), T1 (2% PS), T2 (2% pre-converted nitrite from celery powder; PC), T3 (1% PS + 60 ppm nitrite), and NC (nitrite-free). The T1 and T3 samples had higher nitrosoheme pigment contents, which were associated with the redness of the samples (p<0.05). T1 resulted in the highest redness value (p<0.05). The redness and yellowness of the cooked pork patties increased with increasing PS levels. The pH of the samples subjected to all treatments decreased with progress of the storage period (p<0.05). The pH of the T1 and T3 samples treated with PS was lower (p<0.05) than that obtained with other treatments, as PS has a lower pH value. The treatments in which PS was added were most effective for reducing the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and the residual nitrite content relative to the control. T1 resulted in the highest flavor, off-flavor, and overall acceptability scores during storage (p<0.05). The total viable bacterial count for all treatments was below 1 Log CFU/g, and E. coli and coliform bacteria were not detected during storage. Therefore, these results suggested that pre-converted nitrite from Swiss chard powder is a potential replacement for nitrite in meat products.

  • The National Agrobiodiversity Center (NAS, RDA, Republic of Korea) has continually collected new valuable genetic resources. In this study, we regenerated conserved kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm which couldn't be available because of seed quantity and quality, and we also surveyed their morphological characters for the sustainable utilization. A total of 431 kidney bean accessions were regenerated and 18 morphological traits were surveyed according to the characterization guideline of RDA Genebank. Among the surveyed traits, flowering time ranged from May 23 to September 4 and 73.8% of tested accessions were mainly flowering in June. The maturity time ranged from July 1 to October 15 and main flowering time was July (91.4%). For plant type, 270 accs (62.6%) were climbing type followed by medium type of 86 accs (20.0%) and dwarf type of 65 accs (15.1%). The seed coat colors were various; yellow (34.6%), white (22.3%), brown (17.9%), red (10.7%), black (5.8%), violet (11%), pink (1.4%), navy (0.9%). Principal component analysis indicated that five principal components (PCs) with Eigen values >1 accounted for more than 65.8% variability. The first PC was more related to growth habits such as growth type, flowering time, and plant type. The second and third PCs showed higher values of the pigment characters such as seed coat color, flower color, and pod color. In fourth and fifty PCs, there were the higher positive values of the pod shapes. Our results provided insight into the characteristics kidney beans, thus the utilization basis of kidney beans might be elevated for bio-industry.

  • A string wallcovering is a kind of textile wallcovering which is made of cellulose fiber yarn laminated on base paper. Compared with normal paper or PVC wallpaper, a string wallcovering is preferred continually in the interior design market, as it is not only environmentally friendly but it also has less cost on mass production without the weaving process and has a natural visual effect, excellent functionality such as thermo keeping, permeability, sound absorption. However, in the dyeing process, it is not appropriate to use plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals considering the environmental trend and the government policy plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals. Currently, a string wallcovering is made of raw white yarn and padding with direct dye or pigment which includes toxic elements, especially the use of direct dye is restricted in a part of the developed country due to inclusion of azo. In this study, we researched dyeing based on cold pad batch dyeing of a string wallcovering with reactive dyestuff. The peel strength and bending depth test confirmed that the optimum adhesive type and spread amount improved the water resistance of the string wallcovering. Also, pad batch dyeing with optimum reactive dyestuff enhanced the color fastness to light and rubbing in dry and wet conditions. Additionally, for improvement of color fastness to rubbing in a wet condition, the additional treatment finishing without soaping process which is used water. The results of this study can be used as basic data for environmentally friendly and energy saving of the textile wallcovering.
