  • We have studied the effects of dampening papers (Dampened paper, Newspaper, Korean paper, Flower sheet), silica gel (30g, 60g) and temperature ($20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$) on color changes of Erythronium japonicum. In the treatment of $20^{\circ}C$, color changes were low in treatments with silica gel rather than in a treatment of dampening papers. In particular, newspaper and Korean paper showed much less changes in colors by the combination treatments with 30g of silica gel. Likewise, in the treatment of $25^{\circ}C$, color changes were low in combination treatments with silica gel rather than in a alone treatment of dampening papers. For the combination treatment with 30g of silica gel, low color changes were shown in the divisions of newspaper and Korean paper, while for the combination treatment with 60g of silica gel, low color changes were shown in the those of Korean paper and dampened paper.

  • This study was aimed at giving help to the people intending to change their own hair color design and also providing the guide line to the cosmetic circles for developing new hair color design and promoting sales by statistically analyzing seasonal changes of hair colors puplished on women's magazines(Vogue Korea, Estetica Korea, Woman Chosun, Ce.ci) from 2003 to 2006. The researching methods were as follows; (1) hair colors published on women's magazines from september 2003 to August 2006 were measured by N.C.S. color reader(4 magazines $\times$10 main hair colors/magazine $\times$ 12 months $\times$ 3 years = 1,440 colors). (2) N.C.S. tone is made of percentage, so measured values and chromas were statistically analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and seasonal deferences were statistically analyzed by t-test and specified on high significant values. But hues were not made of percentage, so these were statistically analyzed by cross tabulation analysis, $x^2$ -test and specified on high significant values. These all had been analyzed by SPSS program(ver. 11.0). The results were as follows; (1) Usually seasonal changes of hair values were significant, specially in foreign licensed magazines, and bright values appeared in S/S and dark values in F/W. (2) Seasonal changes of hair hues were significant only on foreign women's magazines. Therefore seasonal changes of korean hair colors were not significant compared by foreign hair colors because of hardness of color changes of dark black hair and hair damages by hair tints and bleaches and trends of well being and hair care. But hair color changes have been developed gradually and will developed furthermore. So korean hair cosmetic circles have to present hair color trends deferenciated by seasons. And S/S hair values have to be brignt and F/W have to be dark. And new seasonal hair hues matched by korean have to be developed and presented.

  • It is pointed out that the color of composite resin is changing according to it's ploymerization and this color change is a harmful effect for the clinical satisfacion of composite resin restoration. The purpose of this study was to compare the changes of color of newly developed composite resins between before and after exposure of activating light. Five Compostie resins (8 shades) were employed: Palfique Estelite(UL, U, DY, G ; Tokuyama), Photo Clearfil A (US : Kuraray), Photo Clearfil Bright (US ; Kuraray), GC Graft LC(A3 ; GC), Silux Plus(U; 3M), Tristirnulus values of each material were determined before and after curing-light exposure by using a Micro Multi Photometer (MMP-1001, Nihon Denshoku Kogyo). The values were transformed into $L^*\;a^*\;b^*$ system and color changes of the resins were evaluated by the changes of $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values for the individual shades. In addition, the effects of resin thickness and background color on color changes were also studied The finding were as follows: 1. Color changes of $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were recognized due to the light exposure for all products. The $b^*$ values of Palfique Estelite showed negligible changes for all shades. 2. The $b^*$ values were affected strongly by the background color, especially when decreasing the brightness on the background color.(Request original article reprints to Dr. Aoshima)

  • Purpose: The color changes in red pepper during far infrared drying were studied in order to establish a color change model. Methods: The far infrared drying experiments of red pepper were conducted at two temperature levels of 60, $70^{\circ}C$ and two air velocity levels of 0.6 and 0.8 m/s. The results were compared with the hot-air drying method. The surface color changes parameters of red pepper were measured qualitatively based on L (lightness), a (redness), b (yellowness) and total color changes (${\Delta}E$). The goodness of fit of model was estimated using the coefficient of determination ($R^2$), the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean relative percent error (P) and the reduced chi-square (${\chi}^2$). Results: The results show that an increase in drying temperature and air velocity resulted in a decrease in drying time, the values of L (lightness) and a (redness) decreased with drying time during far infrared drying. The developed model showed higher $R^2$ values and lower RMSE, P and ${\chi}^2$ values. Conclusions: The model in this study could be beneficial to describe the color changes of red pepper by far infrared drying.

  • This study was done with a goal to observe changes of color emotions according to time flow and light changes as well as to study its moaning of color experience of natural scene to modern city dwellers with artificial surroundings. Individuals develop various feelings after seeing a color, but there is sometimes a common feeling raised among these various feelings. This study aims to investigate the influence of natural colors of surroundings on the emotions of human beings. First of all, we tried to discover how feelings change after a person is reminded of a color through an experience (recognition) of a natural color. Second, differences in feelings resulting from color perception are analyzed after time passes (sunrise, daytime, and sunset) and the colors of natural surroundings change accordingly. Survey was done in the period of $Jul.8^{th}$ to $10^{th}$, 2005 with 100 people (55 male and 45 female) in various professions and various ages between twenties to forties as respondent.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the coat color appearance of Korean brindle cattle and the changes of relevant hormone levels that may affect the hair pigmentation during different stages of growth and maturation. In mature cattle, levels of both ACTH and DHEA in Korean brindle cattle with brown color were significantly higher than those with black color (p<0.05). Levels of ${\alpha}$-MSH in Korean brindle cattle with whole brindle ($${\geq_-}50%$$) color were significantly higher than those with brown color (p<0.05). In calves of Korean brindle cattle at 2 to 6 months, the concentration of estradiol was significantly higher in calves with whole brindle color than those with part brindle color (p<0.05), when the coat color was confirmed. After 6 month of coat color confirmation, levels of testosterone and ACTH increased in calves with part brindle color and were significantly higher than those with whole brindle color (p<0.05). In calves of Korean brindle cattle at 1 or 2 months, there were no significant differences in hormone levels of estradiol, ACTH, DHEA and ${\alpha}$-MSH between the calves with brindle color and brown color, except estradiol before brindle color appearance. Changes of relevant hormone levels at different stage of growth and maturation may affect the pigmentation of coat during the development of cattle. In addition to the current study correlating the different coat colors with relevant hormone levels, investigation of the coat color associated genes expressed in Korean brindle cattle may further clarify the mechanisms of coat color changes during their development.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the color changes of acid dyed wool fabrics after imparting permanent pleats with si-ro-set finish. Monoethanolamine sulfite was used as a reducing agent. Color changes were determined by measuring CIELAB values after treating the dyed fabrics with various setting temperatures, times and concentrations of MEAS. Setting temperature affected the color changes: in the order of $150^{\circ}C>130^{\circ}C>170^{\circ}C$ Setting time had a tendency to increase the color change. As the concentration of MEAS increased, $\delta$ E was increased. Azo dye was more affected than anthraquinone dye by MEAS treatment. Color changes were mainly due to $\delta$ L.

  • PURPOSE. Surface color is one of the main criteria to obtain an ideal esthetic. Many factors such as the type of the material, surface specifications, number of firings, firing temperature and thickness of the porcelain are all important to provide an unchanged surface color in dental ceramics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color changes in dental ceramics according to the material type and glazing methods, during the multiple firings. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different types of dental ceramics (IPS Classical metal ceramic, Empress Esthetic and Empress 2 ceramics) were used in the study. Porcelains were evaluated under five main groups according to glaze and natural glaze methods. Color changes (${\Delta}E$) and changes in color parameters (${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}a$, ${\Delta}b$) were determined using colorimeter during the control, the first, third, fifth, and seventh firings. The statistical analysis of the results was performed using ANOVA and Tukey test. RESULTS. The color changes which occurred upon material-method-firing interaction were statistically significant (P<.05). ${\Delta}E$, ${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}a$ and ${\Delta}b$ values also demonstrated a negative trend. The MC-G group was less affected in terms of color changes compared to other groups. In all-ceramic specimens, the surface color was significantly affected by multiple firings. CONCLUSION. Firing detrimentally affected the structure of the porcelain surface and hence caused fading of the color and prominence of yellow and red characters. Compressible all-ceramics were remarkably affected by repeated firings due to their crystalline structure.

  • The most popular technique for image retrieval in a heterogeneous collection of color images is the comparison of images based on their color histogram. The color histogram describes the distribution of colors in the color space of a color image. In the most image retrieval systems, the color histogram is used to compute similarities between the query image and all the images in a database. But, small changes in the resolution, scaling, and illumination may cause important modifications of the color histogram, and so two color images may be considered to be very different from each other even though they have completely related semantics. A new method of color feature representation based on the 3-dimensional RGB color map is proposed to improve the defects of the color histogram. The proposed method is based on the three 2-dimensional projection map evaluated by projecting the RGB color space on the RG, GB, and BR surfaces. The experimental results reveal that the proposed is less sensitive to small changes in the scene and that achieve higher retrieval performances than the traditional color histogram.
