  • This paper proposes an improved six-color separation reducing the graininess in a middle tone region based on the standard deviation of the lightness and chrominance in S-CIELAB space. Graininess is regarded as visual perception for the fluctuation of the lightness of the light cyan and cyan or light magenta and magenta. In the conventional methods, the granularity is extremely heuristic and inaccurate due to the use of the visual examination score. Accordingly, this paper proposes a method to calculate the objective granularity for six color separation. First, we use the lightness, redness-greenness, and yellowness-blueness of the S-CIELAB space reflecting the spatial-color sensitivity of the human and normalize the sum of the three standard deviations. Finally, we apply the proposed granularity to the six color separation after assigning the granularity to the lookup table and obtain the result reducing the graininess in a middle tone region.

  • Shore-to-sea visible light communication using color clustered multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) is presented. The proposed maritime visible light communication (MVLC) offers a low-cost, high-speed wireless link for shore-to-sea maritime communications. Each color cluster is comprised of 50 red, green and blue (RGB) light emitting diodes (LEDs) and is modulated using on-off-keying (OOK). Selection combining is performed at the receiver, producing diversity effect within that color cluster. In this paper, we employ sea states (wave height, wind speed, etc.) data from both Pierson-Moskowitz and JONSWAP spectrum models under atmospheric turbulence conditions. Based on the simulation model, the maritime link quality is analysed in terms of coverage distance and bit error rate performance. The results show that the proposed system provides an efficient MVLC, while satisfying International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) requirements for maritime buoyage system and also offering sufficient illumination from high power LEDs.

  • In the results of investigating the role of LED light quality in enhancing the ornamental value of indoor foliage plants, amber and red light increased plant height, leaf width, and leaf stalk, and the consequent tree shape decreased the ornamental value. The chlorophyll content increased significantly under white light and compound light. With regard to the effect of plant leaf color on ornamental value, the value of lightness was markedly enhanced by red light. As to the functionality of plants according to photosynthetic activity, plants such as Dieffenbachia, Clusia, and Dracaena were found favorable to those staying indoors for a longtime from morning to evening. Spathiphyllum, and Ficus were found to be recommendable for indoor spaces used actively during afternoon because their photosynthesis was activated in the afternoon. With regard to power consumption according to light quality, white light consumed 119 W/hour, around 45% lower than that of fluorescent lamps, so it is considered the optimal artificial light quality that can enhance energy efficiency. Red light consumed 72 W/hour, only 33% of that of fluorescent lamps, but it was not considered the optimal light quality because plant growth was poor under the light quality. White light and compound light were found to be the ideal light sources for improving the functionality and ornamental value of indoor plants and reducing the cost of maintenance, but because compound light hinders people from recognizing the original color of plants and makes their eyes easily tired, white light was considered the optimal light satisfying all of the ornamental value, economic efficiency and functionality resulting from plant growth.

  • This study examines visual perception and spatial satisfaction according to lighting conditions. Field measurements and surveys were performed in three rest space of university buildings where various lighting conditions were employed. Results indicate that overall impression of space improved when low color temperature, such as 3,000 K governed overall lighting environment and accent lighting was used for wall surfaces. Lighting conditions that kept uniform illuminance levels using area light sources containing fluorescent lamps with 6,500 K failed to keep favorable spatial satisfaction for space. High color temperature was not recommended for lighting in rest space. Asymmetrical illuminance levels formed by low color temperature such as 3000 K is recommended to keep positive mood and improve spatial satisfaction in rest space. Overall impression of the space was influenced by visual comfort, color temperature, spatial satisfaction and brightness. Spatial satisfaction for space was effectively impacted by psychological comfort, color temperature and overall impression for lighting conditions. Psychological comfort in space was influenced by color temperature, spatial satisfaction and visual annoyance from reflected light.

  • This study was to estimate human response to different color light stimulation by measuring physiological parameters of human behavior, For both stimulations we used color lights with 6 color filters such as red, yellow, green, blue, violet, and white. The experiment was performed in a soundproof chamber. 30 young male and female subjects participated in the experiment, For physiological parameters, we measured electroencephalogram (EEG), electr ocardiogram (ECG). The result of EEG analysis showed that the relative power of $\alpha$ wave ratio increased in blue and green, In case of HRV spectrum analysis, HF/LF ratio increased in green and blue. From these results, we knew that the physical response was affected by color environment and it might be an indicator in the design of a color environment.

  • In this study, the dyeability of natural dye extracted from chesnut shell was investigated in order to explore the using of discarded chesnut shell in natural dyeing. Dyeing experiments were done in various dyeing conditions which were different in dyeing temperature, concentration of dyebath, dyeing time, repitition of dyeing. pH of dyebath and mordant with 3 kinds of experimental fabrics silk, nylon and cotton. Color and color difference ($\Delta$ E) of every dyed fabrics were measured and color fastness to drycleaning, washing, perspiration and light were measured. The results were as follows ; 1. The dyebath became thicker with time and temperature of extraction and the characteristics of dyebath prepared chesnut shell 1g : distilled water 30㏄ after 3 hrs-boiling were 32,400ppm and 3.7pH. 2. The dyeabilities of silk and nylon fabrics were good and color difference was increased with dyeing temperature, concentration of dyebath, dyeing time, number of repitition and acidity of dyebath. But the dyeability of cotton was very poor compared to silk and nylon. 3. Without the treatment of mordant, the dyeability of silk was little lower than that of nylon, but after the treatment of mordants it became higher than nylon. After the treatment of mordant Cu and Fe, the dyeability of cotton was increased although the natural dye from the chesnut shell was hardly absorved in cotton without mordant. 4. On the whole, the colorfastness of dyed silk and nylon were very good except the colorfastness to washing in silk and the colorfastness to light in nylon.

  • This study examines the influences of correlated color temperature and illuminance on visual perception and temporary mood sensation in a small office. Field measurements and surveys were conducted in a full-scale mock-up model. Twenty subjects participated in the survey under six lighting conditions formed by three color temperature and two illuminance levels. Results indicate that 4000 K color temperature was effective to mitigate glare sensation from light source. Lamps with low color temperature such as 2700 K was not recommended for office lighting since they are likely to caused glare and visual discomfort. Preferred color temperature was 4000 K and 6500 K for 750 lx and 500 lx target illuminance respectively. The increase of illuminance was not an effective contributor to improve mood perception. The illuminance should be lower than 500 lx to achieve good mood, but the illuminance level in office space should be considered with visual performance simultaneously. This study suggests that fluorescent lighting fixtures with 4000 K lamps would be usefully used for office lighting since they formed friendly conditions for better visual performance.

  • Plant growth and variegated leaf color changes of three leaf variegated Sedum spectabile varieties 'Variegatum', 'Frosty Morn', red colored 'Washfield Ruby', and one Sedum lineare variety 'Variegatum' and Sedum sarmentosum under three levels of shading conditions were examined for leaf ornamental value improvement. Shading levels were 40%($1,500{\mu}mol{\cdot}m-^2{\cdot}s-^1$), 70%($750{\mu}mol{\cdot}m-^2{\cdot}s-^1$) and 85%($375{\mu}mol{\cdot}m-^2{\cdot}s-^1$). Improvements of leaf ornamental value of 'Variegatum' 'Frosty Morn' and 'Washfield Ruby' were observed at 40% shading level and plant heights and leaf sizes were also increased. Plant height of S.sarmentosum were shorten under direct sun light condition and leaf color changed to greenish yellow(RHS143B) but deep green color(RHS144A) was observed under shading conditions. Endurance of S.sarmentosum was stronger than other species and leaf ornamental values remained well at 70% shading level. Leaf width of S.lineare 'Variegatum' were not changed under shading conditions but leaf length was increased. Leaf color was Deep green color was greenish yellow under direct sun light but deepest green color was observed at 85% shading level. Consider all ornamental value criteria, best shading conditions for S.lineare 'Variegatum' were ranged 40% to 70%.

  • Isochromatics obtained from photoelastic experiment shows the stress distributions of full field of a structure under a load. Therefore stress distributions of the structure can be read at a glace through isochromatics. Many experimental data are obtained from isochromatics. And then, the various photoelastic experimental hybrid methods have been developed. Until now, monochromatic light has been used for photoelastic experimental hybrid method. Therefore the photoelastic experimental hybrid method used until now is called the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for black and white isochromatics. When stresses are analyed by photoelastic experimental hybrid method, many experimental data are needed. Therefore some fringe orders of isochromatics are needed for the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for white and black isochromatics. Therefore in this paper, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics is developed. In this case, two fringe orders are enough for the experimental data of photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics. Applying the method to stress concentration problems, its validity is confirmed. In the precision, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics is better than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for white and black isochromatics when fringe orders of isochromatics are few. When fringe orders are few, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics can be used to analyze stress through few fringe orders of isochromatics.
