  • This paper proposes a color-matching 3D look-up table that simplifies the complex color-matching procedure between a monitor and a mobile display device, where the image colors are processed in a device-independent color space, such as CIEXYZ or CIELAB, and gamut mapping performed to compensate the gamut difference. The transform from a device-dependent RGB color space to a device-independent color space is implemented by performing display characterization. The mobile LCD characterization error using the S-curve model is larger than the tolerance error since the mobile LCD has the channel-chromaticity-inconstancy and channel-dependence characteristics. In this paper we reduced the characterization error using the electro-optical transfer functions of X, Y, and Z value for R, G, B, C, M, Y, K components. Experimental results demonstrated that 64 ($4{\times}4{\times}4$) was the smallest size of color-matching look-up table that could produce an image with an acceptable reproduction error, based on a comparison of color-matched images resulting from the proposed color-matching look-up table and complex step-by-step color-matching procedures.

  • In current printer industry, four or more colorants are added for color gamut extension because the gamut of printer is smaller than other devices. However, these additional colorants make a redundancy problem that several combinations of colorants reproduced same color stimulus in colorimetric inverse characterization process. Thus, we propose a method of colorimetric inverse characterization using color correlation between colorant's amount. First, for analyzing the combination of colorants which represent the same color stimulus, we estimate the color stimulus for all combination of colorants by Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer printer model. The combination of colorants which has higher color correlation factor comparing combinations of colorant around itself in color space is selected. It can reduced the color difference from the tetrahedral interpolation process which is estimation of the output value(colorants combination) for arbitrary input(color stimulus). The selected combinations of colorants and their color stimulus are stored to the lookup table. In experiment, the CMYKGO printer was used. As a result, the dark region of color gamut was extended and the color tone was more naturally represented.

  • A new 10.4" transflective TFT-LCD has been developed using newly designed color filter for sunlight readable application. High transmittance and color gamut are realized by the dual color filter and dual cell gap structure in the ECB mode. The color gamut of new device provides 17% in transmissive and 18% in reflective mode. This new device provides the $125cd/m^2$ of luminance, 240:1 and 27:1 of contrast ratio in the transmissive and reflective mode, respectively.

  • Recently many devices print electronic images in a variety of ways. The reproduced color, however, is different from the original color because of the difference of hardware characteristics. To maintain device independent color, gamut mapping method is proposed. The proposed color gamut mapping uses nonlinear intensity mapping and clipping for saturation mapping on HSI color space. In the dithering operation, expanded nonlinear ordered dithering and modified error diffusion are proposed. The proposed ordered dithering uses expanded nonlinear quantization which considers overlapping phenomena of neighbored printing dots. In the modified error diffusion, quantization errors to be diffused are adjusted to improve both image blur and color change produced in the error diffusion. So, the printed image is similar to the image of monitor. Our results indicate that proposed algorithm can produce high quality image in the low bit color devices.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method for estimating an accurate gamut based on segment maxima method. According to the number of segments in the segment maxima, a local concavity is generated in the vicinity of lightness axis or a gamut is reduced in high chroma region. It induces artifacts or deterioration of the image quality. To remove these artifacts, the number of segment is determined according to the number of samples. and a local concavity is modified by extending a detected concave point to the line connecting two adjacent boundary points. Experimental results show that the contours in a uniform color region and speckle artifacts from the conventional segment maxima algorithm are removed.

  • Currently many devices reproduce electronic images in the various ways. However the color that is reproduced in any device is different from the original color due to the difference in the gamut between devices. In this paper, an image dependent gamut mapping method is proposed. This method clips the chroma with compensating for the change of lightness caused by the lightness scaling. The anchor point, which is the center point in the mapping, is set as a lower point by the proposed method than a point by the conventional mapping method. This reduces the color difference between point. In addition, to heighten the color contrast on the constant hue, the different two mapping methods are applied to the printer gamut which is divided in two region, bright region and dark region. Consequently, the printer output image was highly consistent with the corresponding monitor image.

  • Various studies with regard to increasing the optical efficiency of plasmonic color filters have previously been conducted, such as mixing materials or applying diverse pattern shapes. Fundamentally, it is important to maximize the photonic crystal effect by finding the optimum periods of lattice as well as calculating the most efficient transmission area. In this study, we propose a technical method for optimizing the plasmonic color filters that have a high color gamut and luminance by analyzing the light spectrums based on the 1931 color coordinate system. Moreover, we suggest a calculation method in order to define the individual color purity of red and green and blue filters. Consequently, efficiency values are obtained independently from each color filter by evaluating the color purity and the luminance. The final result obtained from simulation are 27.6% of relative luminance and 25.3% of color gamut. The proposed optimization method is applicable to all plasmonic color filters having photonic crystal arrays.

  • In this paper, the fabrication of a white light-emitting diode (WLED) package capable of producing different color rendering indexes (CRI ($R_a$)) using different types of phosphors (YAG:Ce, Silicate, Nitride, LuAG) for the LEDs is presented. The color quality is evaluated based on the current and temperature variation conditions. The evaluation method for color quality compares the existing CIE 13.3 method and the new IES TM-30-15 method. The CRI ($R_a$) defined in the conventional CIE 13.3 has the disadvantage. This cannot offer any information relevant to the user's preference. However, the newly proposed IES TM-30-15 method suggests the additional measure related to user's preference such as Color Gamut ($R_g$). The present experimental results obtained using the IES TM-30-15 show that the color quality of the WLEDs using green and red phosphors are better than that of the WLEDs using yellow phosphor, but their luminous efficacies are lower. The color quality of WLEDs using green and red phosphors are more stable than that of the WLEDs using yellow phosphor, for current and temperature variations, and it is verified that the phosphor causes this change. The evaluation method for color quality, based on IES TM-30-15, is proved to be capable of overcoming the problems of the existing evaluation methods by this study.
