Recently, high electrochemical performance anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries are of interest. Here, we present silicon-carbon-graphene (Si-C-GR) composites for high performance anode materials of lithium ion secondary battery (LIB). Aerosol process and heat-treatment were employed to prepare the Si-C-GR composites using a colloidal mixture of silicon, glucose, and graphene oxide precursor. The effects of the size of the silicon particles in Si-C-GR composites on the material properties including the morphology and crystal structure were investigated. Silicon particles ranged from 50 nm to 1 ㎛ in average diameter were employed while concentration of silicon, graphene oxide and glucose was fixed in the aerosol precursor. Morphology of as-fabricated Si-C-GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball and the Si particles were well wrapped in carbon and graphene. The size range of composites was about from 2.2 to 2.9 ㎛. The composites including silicon particles larger than 200 nm in size exhibited higher performance as LIB anodes such as capacity and coulombic efficiency than silicon particles less than 100 nm, which were about 1500 mAh/g at 100 cycles in capacity and 99% in coulombic efficiency, respectively.

Transports of heterogeneously charged particles were investigated based on column experiments. Synthesized mono-dispersed ferrihydrite (${\sim}100nm$) and amorphous $SiO_2\;({\sim}40nm\;and\;{\sim}80nm)$ particles, of which surfaces are oppositely charged under pH < 9.0 (ferrihydrite, positive; amorphous silica, negative), were used. $177{\sim}250{\mu}m$ quartz sand was used as a stationary matrix. The results show that even favorable particles (i.e., ferrihydrite) can show a conservative transport through the oppositely charged media (i.e., quartz) when they coexist with humic acid or with much greater number of oppositely charged particles. These results imply that transports of both negatively and positively charged contaminants may be possible at the same time under a condition of heterogeneous colloidal system.
The $Gd_{1.9-x}Li_{0.1}Eu_xO_3$ (x=0.02, 0.05, 0.08, and 0.12) powders (${\thickapprox}1{\mu}m$) synthesized by sol-gel method, whose surfaces are modified in a colloidal silica suspension (size of $SiO_2$ particles: ${\sim}30$ nm), have been fabricated to highly stable and effective luminescent films on the glass substrates. Thanks to the fused $SiO_2$ nano particles in the vicinity of the glass softening temperature (at around $700^{\circ}C$), $Gd_{1.9-x}Li_{0.1}Eu_xO_3$ powders are strongly attached onto the surface of glass substrate (>9H, pencil hardness tester). This simple and low-cost method to get $Gd_{1.9-x}Li_{0.1}Eu_xO_3$ phosphor films without any loss of luminescence brightness would promise for applications to display devices.

The electrical conductivity of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP's) has been improved by indium-tin oxide (ITO) nano-particle coating on carbon fibers for the purpose of lightning strike protection of composite fuselage skins. ITO nano-particles were coated on the surface of carbon fibers by spraying the colloidal suspension with 10~40% ITO content. The electrical conductivity of the CFRP has been increased more than three times after ITO coating, comparable to or higher than that of B-787 composite fuselage skins with metal wire-meshes on the outer surface, without sacrificing the tensile property due to the existence of nano-particles at fiber-matrix interface. The damage area by the simulated lightning strike was also verified for different materials and conditions by using ultrasonic C-scan image. As the electrical conductivity of 40% nano-ITO coated sample surpass that of the B-787 sample, the damage area by lightning strike also appeared comparable to that of the materials currently employed for composite fuselage construction.
The objective of this study was the development of immunochromatography (ICG) for the rapid and accurate detection of Listeria monocytogenes. Here, monoclonal antibodies (MAb) were conjugated with 40 nm colloidal gold particles, where the conjugate was used as the detection reagent in the ICG. The ICG was composed of three pads (sample, conjugate, and absorbance pads) and one nitrocellulose membrane. The colloidal gold-MAb conjugate was applied to the conjugate pad, and the test line and control line on the membrane were treated with MAb (FKLM-3BI2-37) and anti-mouse IgG, respectively. The detection limit of the ICG was $10^{5}$ cell/mL and it showed no cross-reaction to food borne pathogens. We inoculated meat and lettuce samples with various counts of L. monocytogenes, and analyzed them by ICG. All the inoculated meat samples gave positive results after enrichment for 24 h in LEB. These results indicate that ICG was able to serve as a primary screening tool for L. monocytogenes in various foods and agricultural products within 20 min after enrichment.

Reinforced concrete(R/C) is commonly used to structures because they have many merits that compressive strength, economy and so on. However, reinforced concrete has a crack at the tensile section which is due to the relatively lower tensile strength than its compressive strength Latex modified concrete(LMC) has higher tensile and flexural strength than the ordinary portland cement, due to the interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beam with latex modified concrete, having the main experimental variables such as concrete types(ordinary portland cement concrete, latex modified concrete), latex contents(0%, 15%), flexural steel ratios(0.012, 0.0235), and with/without shear reinforcement. The beam of LMC showed considerably higher initial cracking loads and ductility than that of OPC, but, similar to ultimate strength and deflection. This might be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic, and colloidal properties of the latexes resulting in reduced water evaporation. The beam with latex modified concrete could be adopted at field for controlling and reducing the tensile crack due to its higher tensile strength.
In this study, the colloidal stability and sedimentation behavior of crystalline $TiO_2$ particles (300nm) in various organic solvents have been investigated by means of a backscattered light flux profile (Turbiscan). The backscattered light flux profiles revealed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were readily sedimented in water, methyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol due to a flocculation-induced particle growth, while a particle coalescence and a sedimentation of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were hardly observed in isopropyl alcohol. The migration velocities of the $TiO_2$ particle were measured as around 6.15/min, 12.53 m/min, 6.51m/min, and 0.18m/min for water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol, respectively, showing a remarkably slow migration of the $TiO_2$ particles in isopropyl alcohol.

In this study, a TiO2 colloidal sol was synthesized by sol-gel process, which was used as a "glue" agent to enhance interconnection of TiO2 particles in low temperature process for plastic dye sensitized solar cell. The crystalline phase of this TiO2 glue is pure anatase with average particles size of 5 nm, which was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and high revolution-TEM. The viscous alcoholic paste without any organic binder was prepared from the mixture of commercial P25 powder and glue. Paste composition and sintering process parameters were optimized for high photovoltaic performance based on low temperature process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photocurrent-photovoltage transient spectroscopy were also employed to investigate the mechanism of electron transport in this binder free TiO2 film system.

Submicron colloidal silica coated with ceria were prepared by mixing of silica and nano ceria particles and modified by hydrothermal reaction. The polishing efficiency of the ceria coated silica slurry was tested over oxide film on silicon wafer. By changing the polishing pressure in the range of $140{\sim}420g/cm^2$ with the ceria coated silica slurries in $100{\sim}300nm$, rates, WIWNU and friction force were measured. The removal rate was in the order of 200, 100, and 300 nm size silica coated with ceria. It was known that the smaller particle size gives the higher removal rate with higher contact area in Cu slurry. In the case of oxide film, the indentation volume as well as contact area gives effect on the removal rate depending on the size of abrasives. The indentation volume increase with the size of abrasive particles, which results to higher removal rate. The highest removal rate in 200 nm silica core coated with ceria is discussed as proper combination of indentation and contact area effect.
