  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of supplementation of fish oil on serum lipid in young healthy females. Eighteen female college students were divided into 3 groups. Each group fed a typical Korean diet supplemented with 15g, 12g and 9g of fish oil respectively for 1 week. Blood samples were obtained 4 times before supplementation, immediatly after supplementation, 1 week after stopping supplementation and 3 week after stopping supplementation. After 6 week break, the doses of fish oil were interchanged among 3 groups and the experiment was repeated to reduce interindivisual variation. The level of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol in the serum samples were determined immediately after stopping supplementation and then the value compared with those of the before supplementation period. The results obtained are summarised as follows; The serum TC levels decreased significatly(p<0.01) immediately after supplementation of fish oil and 1 week after stopping supplementation. The serum TG levels also decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after supplementation of fish oil. The HDL-cholesterol levels increased significantly(p<0.05) at 2 week and 3 weeks after stopping supplementation of fish oil in the 12g and the 15g supplementation groups. The LDL-cholesterol levels decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after and 1 week after stopping supplementation of fish oil. The ratio of HDL-C to TC increased significantly(p<0.01) and the ratio of LDL-C to HDL-C, and index of artherogenesity, decreased significantly(p<0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the recognition of citizens in Busan on the doctor-designation system, the awareness of medical consumers with experience of using this system and their satisfaction in an effort to seek ways of improving this system. The subjects in this study were the selected citizens in Busan who were at the age of 20 and up. As a result, it's found that the largest group of the respondents was female, in their 20s, received college or higher education, students and in the service industry, and that the most common monthly mean income was between two and 2.99 million won. 27.7 percent were aware of the doctor-designation system, and 23.7 percent became cognizant of the system through others who had used it. The rate of knowing the rules of the doctor-designation system (the right answer) stood at 66.3 percent. They got to know about the system through mass media(31.9%), and used it since it offered highly specialized treatment(57.5%). The respondents who had used it intended to reuse it(76.3%), and the reason was that they were provided with high-class medical services (35.2%). The respondents who had used this system got a mean of 2.96 in satisfaction level, which was not high in general. They mentioned more publicity efforts(91.2%), offering information in a conspicuous place (96.7%) and cutting doctor-designation treatment fee as a means of improving this system. As for how to ensure the operating efficiency of the system, sustained publicity seem to be necessary to raise awareness of the system among patients, and it's required to take measures to relieve patients of financial burden caused by medical bills.

  • Minimum Housing Standard is an instrument to cope with the problems of public health and community hygiene, deterioration of working class housing conditions appeared commonly in the process of capitalist industrialization and rapid rural-to-urban migration. This paper aims to examine the institutionalization of histories of minimum housing standard in the advanced countries, and analyze the spatio-temporal changes and characteristics of households failing to meet the New Minimum Housing Standard in Seoul Metropolitan since 1995. The analysis of this paper is based on the census data on population and housing. The results are as follows; Households failing to meet the New Minimum Housing Standard in Seoul are 501,000 households(1.368 million person, 14.4%). This means Seoul has overtaken the national average 11.8% for the first time and there are structurally marginal band of households who can not improve the housing conditions by themselves. In addition, the fact that the rate of Seoul households living in the marginal shelter including the basement and rooftop room is the highest in Korea means the housing quality issues of Seoul is serious. Spatial distribution of households failing to meet the standard is divided into the northeast area and the southwest area in Seoul. Main features of the households are female-headed families, middle and old-aged people, divorce families, lower educated people, under and graduate students, non-apartments, dweller in 15~20 year old houses.

  • In this study, changes in performance of 2-back task, blood oxygen saturation and heart rate due to $40\%$ concentration oxygen supply were observed. Five male $(25.8\pm1.3)$ and five female $(23.0\pm1.0)$ college students were nked to perform 2-bark task during two types of oxygen (concentration $21\%,\;40\%$) administration. The experimental sequence consisted of Rest1(1 min.), 0-back Task (1 min.), 2-bark Task (2 min.), and Rest2 (4 min.) and the physiological signals such as blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured throughout the stages. The experimental result showed that the performance increased significantly at $40\%'s$ concentration of oxygen rather than $21\%'s$, which shows oxygen supply has positive influence on cognitive performance. When $40\%$ concentration oxygen is supplied, the oxygen saturation in the blood increased and heart rate was decreased significantly comparing to $21\%$. It is Suggested that $40\%$ oxygen can stimulate brain activation bY increasing actual blood oxygen concentration in the process of cognitive performance, and hyperoxia makes heart rate decrease.

  • Library and information science professionals have to grasp user's needs and make the best decisions when designing, acquiring, and managing library information systems. However, it is not easy for them to make the decision owing to the lack of an understanding of the characteristics of a specific user group in computer-based information systems in libraries. The aim of this study was to provide information on the characteristics and abilities of specific user groups such as male & female student groups, undergraduate & graduate ones, Sciences and Humanities majored ones etc. The actual OPAC systems were searched by specific student user groups in selected academic libraries in both Republic of Korea and the States for the purpose(Author, Title, and Subject search). Ouestionnaire was prepared and administered to Korean college students in the city of Taegu, Korea and adjacent area. Two hundred and seven usable questionnaires were obtained and analyzed. These were analyzed using descriptive, inferential statistics, and SPSS software. The major findings by data analysis of this study were described in chapters 4 and 5 of this paper in detail. Also, conclusions were drawn from the findings in this paper, and recommendations were proposed when designing, adopting, or managing a new system.

  • To investigate the effects of isoflavone supplementation on both bone mineral density and hormone variation in premenopausal women who had decreased bone mass, the 24 subjects were divided into two groups: one was the underweight group, consisting of 13 subjects, and the other was the normal weight group consisting of 11 subjects. For each group, we investigated the effects of isoflavone supplementation of 90 mg/day on both bone mineral density and hormone variation during 3 menstrual cycles. Anthropometric measurements, dietary recall, and analyses of blood and urine were assessed from baseline to post-treatment. The results were as follows: The average age of the underweight group was 21.8 years old and that of the normal weight group was 23.2 years old. The comparative results for the two groups at baseline were as follows: Onset of menarche, menstrual cycle, and menstrual length were not significantly different between the groups. Serum protein, total, HDL-, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, Ca, P, Mg, Cu, and Zn level were not significantly different between the groups. Serum estradiol, SHBG, LH, and FSH level were also not significantly different between the groups. Lumbar spine BMD by T scores of the underweight group was significantly lower than that of the normal weight group. Serum osteocalcin, urinary DPD, and urinary pH were not significantly different between the groups. The comparative results for the two groups at post-treatment were as follows: From baseline to post-treatment, the intake of energy, nutrients and isoflavone in food did not significantly change in either group. Serum protein, total cholesterol, HDL-, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels did not significantly change in either group. Serum Ca, Cu, and Zn levels were significantly lower in both groups and serum Mg level significantly decreased only in the underweight group. Serum estradiol levels were significantly lower in both groups, but serum SHBG, LH, and FSH levels did not significantly change in either group. Lumbar spine BMD by T score of the underweight group significantly increased to 15%, but that of the normal weight group did not significantly change. Serum osteocalcin of the underweight group significantly increased to 28%, while that of the normal weight group significantly increased to 40%. Urinary DPD of the normal weight group significantly increased to 12%. The results show that the BMD of the underweight group was lower than that of the normal weight group. Therefore, the underweight group had a disadvantage in obtaining maximum bone mineral density. The results also show that isoflavone supplementation during 3 menstrual cycles was effective in increasing the bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and affected bone metabolism markers in premenopausal underweight women. Therefore, it can be concluded that sufficient intake of isoflavone could be helpful in preventing decreases in bone mass among premenopausal women, especially underweight women.

  • This study investigated the effect of 40% oxygen administration on the addition task performance in three levels of difficulties and physiological signals. Ten male and female college students were selected as the subjects for this study. The experiment consisted of two runs: one was a addition task, with normal air (21% oxygen) administered and the other was with hyperoxic air (40% oxygen) administered. The experimental sequence in each run consisted of Rest1 (3 min), Task1 (1 min, one digit addition task), Task2 (1 min, two digit addition task), Task3 (1 min, three digit addition task), and Rest2 (4 min). Blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured throughout the five phases. The accuracy rates of the addition task were enhanced with 40% oxygen administration compared to 21% oxygen. Difference in the accuracy rates grew higher with the rise of difficulty. When 40% concentration oxygen is supplied, blood oxygen saturation increased and heart rate was decreased comparing to 21%. This study showed that the supply of high concentration oxygen increases blood oxygen saturation, which in turns accelerates brain activation resulting from cognitive process and enhances arithmetic abilities. Particularly when difficulty is high, demand for oxygen increases and, as a result, the effect of high concentration oxygen becomes more significant.
