Finite element analysis based fatigue life evaluation approach for railway bridges: a study in Indian scenario

  • Fatigue is a principal failure mode for steel structures, and it is still less understood than any other modes of failure. Fatigue life estimation of metal bridges is a major issue for making cost effective decisions on the rehabilitation or replacement of existing infrastructure. The fatigue design procedures given by the standard codes are either empirical or based on nominal stress approach. Since the fatigue life estimation through field measurements is difficult and costly, more researches are needed to develop promising techniques in the fatigue analysis of bridges through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This paper aims to develop a methodology for the Fatigue life estimation of railway steel bridge using FEA. The guidelines of IIW-1823-07 were used in the development of the methodology. The Finite Element (FE) package ANSYS and the programming software MATLAB were used to implement this methodology on an Indian Railway Standard (IRS) welded plate girder bridge. The results obtained were compared with results from published literature and found satisfactory.

Work-related Stress and Risk Factors among Korean Employees (한국 근로자의 업무관련성 스트레스와 위험요인)

  • Purpose: Work-related stress and risk factors among Korean employees were identified in this study. Methods: Data were obtained from employees aged 20 to 64 using the Korean Working Conditions Survey 2006 (KWCS). Multiple logistic regression analysis using SAS version 9.1 was performed to examine risk factors of work-related stress by gender. Results: The age-adjusted prevalence of work-related stress among male and female employees was 18.4% and 15.1% respectively. After adjustments for multiple variables among both male and female employees, there was a significant relationship between work-related stress and risk factors including education, company size, work time, ergonomic risks, biological chemical risks, and job demands. The significant variables for male employees were housework load, occupational class, and shift work, and for female employees, type of employment. Conclusion: There is a need to develop and support intensive stress management programs nationally giving consideration to work-related stress associated with working time, physical working environment, and job demands. Based on gender specific approaches, for male employes, stress management programs should be developed with consideration being given to occupational class and shift work. For stress management programs for female employees, consideration needs to be given to permanent employment status, specifically those in small companies.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a stress management program on Job Stress in culinary staff at a Hotel. Method: This was a quasi-experimental study using non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 52 culinary staff members(head culinary. first culinary) working at a S hotel. (25 in the experimental group. 27 in the control group) The experimental group was provided with an individual counseling program for 12 weeks and 30 min/week. The control group was provided with booklets. Data were analyzed with SAS Program using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The stress management program was effective to improve job stressors and especially to relax interpersonal conflict among the sub-factors of job stress based on the results mentioned above. Conclusion: This program was effective in reducing job stress. However. further studies are required to measure persistent and long-term effects through the application of the program. which is specifically designed for reduce to job stress. for over 12 weeks.

Factors Related to the Job Stress of Home Health Care Nurses at Health Centers in Seoul Korea (서울시 보건소 맞춤형 방문건강관리 간호사의 직무스트레스 관련 요인)

  • Purpose: To identify factors that affect the job stress of visiting nurses at health centers in Seoul, Korea, who perform home care services. Methods: Data were collected in the period from November 20 to December 10, 2008, from 206 visiting nurses working at 25 health centers in Seoul metropolitan city. Self-report questionnaires of the Organization-Based Self-Esteem (OBSE) and the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) were used. Data were analyzed by the SPSS win 15.0. Results: Several findings were obtained from the study. First, the mean of job stress was 52.4 points, which was higher than that of Korean women. Second, it was shown that by the sub-domain of job stress, the mean value belonged to the top 50% in the four sub-domains of physical environment, job demand, interpersonal conflict, and organizational system. Additionally, it belonged to the top 25% in the sub-domain of job insecurity, wherein the job stress was the highest. Third, the self-esteem of the nurses had the most significant effect on their job stress. Conclusion: Stress related to job insecurity was the highest among the visiting nurses at health centers in Seoul who perform the custom home care service thus, institutional support is urgently needed to alleviate such stress and secure their employment.

Two Cases of Suspected Raynaud's Syndrome Diagnosed by Cold Stress Test Treated with Chiljehyangbuhwan (냉부하검사상 레이노드증후군으로 의심되는 환자에 대한 칠제향부환 투여 2례)

  • Diagnosis of Raynaud's phenomenon is primarily based on clinical symptoms. Cold stress test(CST) done by DITI(Digital Infrared Thermographic Image) can be helpful for objective diagnosis. The cold stress test was performed three times by DITI; the first after 15 minutes of rest, the second right after one minute of soaking in $20^{\circ}C$ water, the third ten minutes after immersion. For a clear diagnosis, the temperature of the finger tips must be low, or the thermal difference between the metacarpophalangeal joints and the fingertips must be large. Also the evaluation of treatment depends on decrease of thermal gradient between the metacarpophalangeal joints and the finger tips after CST. In oriental medicine Raynaud's phenomenon can be categorized by coldness of the limbs or numbness. Numbness was diagnosed as depression of Ki and Chiljehyangbuhwan(Qizhixiangfuwan) was prescribed. Positive results were observed, not only in follow up CST, but also Visual Analogue Scale after treatment.

Correlation of Self-Efficacy, Stress Coping and Adjustment to College Life Nursing Students (간호대학생의 자기효능감, 스트레스 대처, 대학생활적응과의 관계)

  • This study was a descriptive research study to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy, stress coping, and college adaptation among nursing students. The subjects were extracted from students at four-year nursing colleges in K province, and data collection was conducted from October 1 to December 10, 2018. Data analysis was done using the SPSS 22.0 program, frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. The results show that the self-efficacy of nursing college students was 3.07 ± .39, stress coping was 2.15 ± .24, and college adaptation was 3.32 ± .49. There were significant differences in college life adaptation to stress coping, depending on major satisfaction, support motivation, and drinking. The higher the subject's self-efficacy and stress coping level, the higher the adaptation to university life. In addition, there were significant differences in general characteristics according to major satisfaction, academic support motivation, and drinking. Based on the above research results, it is necessary to develop a support program to strengthen the ability to cope with stress among college students.

Stanniocalcin 2 enhances mesenchymal stem cell survival by suppressing oxidative stress

  • To overcome the disadvantages of stem cell-based cell therapy like low cell survival at the disease site, we used stanniocalcin 2 (STC2), a family of secreted glycoprotein hormones that function to inhibit apoptosis and oxidative damage and to induce proliferation. STC2 gene was transfected into two kinds of stem cells to prolong cell survival and protect the cells from the damage by oxidative stress. The stem cells expressing STC2 exhibited increased cell viability and improved cell survival as well as elevated expression of the pluripotency and self-renewal markers (Oct4 and Nanog) under sub-lethal oxidative conditions. Up-regulation of CDK2 and CDK4 and down-regulation of cell cycle inhibitors p16 and p21 were observed after the delivery of STC2. Furthermore, STC2 transduction activated pAKT and pERK 1/2 signal pathways. Taken together, the STC2 can be used to enhance cell survival and maintain long-term stemness in therapeutic use of stem cells.

Game Use Behaviors Classification of College Students: Focusing on Stress, Satisfaction and Balance of the Basic Psychological Needs (대학생의 게임 이용 행동 군집분류: 스트레스와 기본심리욕구 만족 및 균형을 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to classify college students using games based on the stress, satisfaction and balance of basic psychological needs and to identify how gaming behaviors differ according to the divided clusters. This study used data of 447 college students who used games with the support of JangHoon Scholarship Foundation. As a result, the college students using games were divided into four groups with different characteristics according to stress, satisfaction and balance of basic psychological needs. Also, the level of gaming behavior was different according to the degree of satisfaction of basic psychological needs. The lower the stress and the higher the balance when the level of satisfaction was similar, the lower the level of gaming behaviors was. This study confirmed the importance of satisfactory balance of basic psychological needs as well as satisfaction, and supported the biopsychological perspective by suggesting that there are significant differences in gaming behavior according to clusters.

Effects of Perceived Stress, Ego-resilience on Premenstrual Syndrome in Female College Students (여대생의 지각된 스트레스, 자아탄력성이 월경전증후군에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between perceived stress, ego-resilience, and premenstrual syndrome(PMS) and investigate the factors affecting PMS in female college students. The study participants were 215 female college students in Gyeunggi province. Data were collected from October 10 to November 10, 2017, using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. PMS was positively correlated with the perceived stress and negatively correlated with ego-resilience. Eating habits, interference with daily life by menstruation, perceived stress accounted for 44.4% of variance in PMS. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop a management program that integrates psychological factors and lifestyle improvement including dietary habits, as well as efforts to manage menstrual symptoms in order to alleviate the premenstrual syndrome of female college students.

Effects of Anxiety and Infection Control Job Stress on Depression in Nurses (임상간호사의 불안과 감염관리 직무스트레스가 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aims to identify the degree of anxiety and depression related to infection control and job stress in clinical nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the effects of depression. Finally, it intends to develop intervention measures to prevent depression in clinical nurses during epidemics of new infectious diseases and prepare basic data for developing educational programs. Methods: Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire survey administered to 208 nurses. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS (Version 26.0) statistics program. Results: The correlation analysis between participant depression, anxiety, and infection control job stress found that depression had a positive correlation with anxiety (r=.63, p<.001) and infection control work stress (r=.26, p<.001). Anxiety (β=0.60, p<.001) was found to significantly affect participant depression with an explanatory power of 40.2%, confirming that higher anxiety levels induce increased depression. Conclusion: Based on the above results, anxiety is confirmed to be a factor that affects depression. Accordingly, education is required to strengthen individuals' physical and mental capabilities and promote a safe working environment, including providing sufficient personal protective devices and other appropriate gear to defend clinical nurses against outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases at medical institutions and through healthcare policies. Other considerations should include sufficient rest hours and paying additional benefits for nurses caring for patients with severe confirmed COVID-19.
