Absorbable Plate as a Perpendicular Strut for Acute Saddle Nose Deformities

  • Background : Nasal pyramid fractures accompanied by saddle nose deformities are not easily corrected by closed reduction. We used an absorbable plate as a perpendicular strut to support the collapsed "keystone area" and obtained good results. Methods : Between September 2008 and June 2011, 18 patients who had nasal pyramid fractures with saddle nose deformities underwent surgery. Pre- and postoperative facial computed tomographic images and photographs were taken to estimate outcomes. The operative technique included the mucoperichondrial dissection of the nasal septum, insertion of an absorbable plate prepared to an appropriate length to support the "keystone area", and fixation of the absorbable plate strut to the cartilaginous septum. Results : Functional and esthetic outcomes were satisfactory in all patients. Eleven patients assessed the postoperative appearance of the external nose as 'markedly improved' and 7 patients as 'improved'. The 5 surgeons scored the results as a mean of 4.5 on a 5-point scale. Conclusions : The use of an absorbable plate as a perpendicular strut requires no additional procedures because the plate is gradually absorbed. The mechanical strength provided by a buttress between the "keystone area" and the maxillary crest lasts for a long time before the strut is absorbed.

Preparation and Application of ITO Hollow Spheres (Hollow ITO 제조법 및 응용)

  • Hollow ITO powders were prepared by using polystyrene powders as a template. The specific gravity of the prepared hollow ITO powders was less than half compared with that of normal ITO spheres. As a result, the mismatch between the specific gravity of ITO and that of polymer solution was reduced. When the prepared hollow ITO powders and the polymer solutions are mixed, some portion of the hollow particles were collapsed and generated lots of small fragments. Thousands of the broken fragments from hollow ITO powders caused the increased contact area between particles and finally resulted in the higher electrical conductivity for the coating solution made of the prepared hollow ITO powders and the polymer solution.

  • In the surface pressure-area isotherms of mixed monolayers, mixtures containing as much as 30 mol% of AA form stable condensed monolayer while the monolayer without AA is in the expanded state because PVK take on 3D collapsed. All of the mixed monolayers with 0, 10, 20 and 30 mol% of AA could be readily transferred onto ITO substrate at 16, 17, 24 and 26 mN/m, respectively. The monolayer containing 30 mol% of AA, however, showed a roughness value of 28A and became homogeneous decreasing with the phase separation. We fabricated organic EL device of ITO/CuPc/MEL/BBOT/iLiF/Al using mixed monolayer of 13, 19 and 25 layer deposited by LB method as a emitting layer. In the voltage-current characteristics of EL device, current density was much smaller than that of the spin-coated devices. It may due to the large contact resistance existed at the interface of LB layer/organic layer inhibit carrier injection to the emitting layer. EL spectra of device showed peaks at 450. 470, 505, 555 and 650 nm and the white light emission indicate the CIE coordinate x=0.306, y=0.353.

Quenching of star formation in massive halos at z~2

  • The gradual infall of small dark matter halos onto larger ones has become a relatively straightforward aspect of the standard hierarchical formation paradigm. What happens to the baryons they contain, however, is less well understood. Of special relevance are the processes that regulate and ultimately suppress star formation in galaxies in the early universe. The z=1.5-2.5 epoch is then particularly interesting as a transition period when global star-formation in the universe starts peaking but also where the first ostensibly collapsed and virialized galaxy clusters appear, along with segregated galaxy populations. From a theoretical point of view, the mode of gas accretion in massive halos is also expected to change around this time, switching from a cold to a hot phase and affecting the build-up and evolution of the galaxies they host. A lot of effort has thus been devoted to the search for high-redshift structures, in particular galaxy clusters, through a variety of methods. However, as the limited area for which deep datasets are available remains relatively limited, only few massive z>1.5 structures have been found so far. Here I will instead discuss the regulation of star-formation in lower-mass, X-ray detected halos at z~2 and its implication for galaxy quenching at high redshift. As these smaller, group-size halos are vastly more abundant and structurally simpler than massive clusters, they allow for true statistical studies and offer a novel way to probe environmental effects in this transitional epoch.

A Study on the Typhoon Disaster of Greenhouse (시설원예용 플라스틱 하우스의 태풍피해에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to find a way of improving the windproof capability of greenhouse foundations. Generally, greenhouses are often collapsed due to the strong winds, because they are very light weight structures. In such a critical situations, the foundations are very often subjected to uplift and vibration at the same time. This paper describes both the wind disaster of greenhouses by the typhoon FAEY and the uplift resistance of greenhouse foundations. Followings are the results obtained from this study ; Judging from the view point of year round cultural aspects, it is recommended that some measures be taken for the preventions of greenhouse film ruptures because greenhouse structural damages are found to be directly associated with the local rupture of cover film. In the case of surveyed area, movable pipe-houses or pipe-houses of 1-2W type were found to be completely destroyed when the maximum instantaneous wind velocity was over 30m/sec or so. In the case of movable pipe-houses, the uplift resistance of greenhouse was expected to increase with the increase of pipe diameter and/or the embedment pipe length. But at present situations there is a limitation in raising the uplift resistance of movable pipe-house, because pipe diameters as well as pipe lengths customarily selected by farmers are quite a much limited.

Dam Failure and Unsteady Flow Analysis through Yeoncheon Dam Case(I) -Analysis of Dam Failure Time and Duration by Failure Scenarios and Unsteady Flow - (연천댐 사례를 통한 댐 파괴 부정류해석 및 하류 영향 검토(I) -댐 파괴 시나리오와 부정류 해석을 통한 지속시간 및 파괴시간 해석-)

  • This study aims at the estimation of dam failure time and dam failure scenario analysis of and applied to Yeoncheon Dam which was collapsed August 1st 1999, using HEC-HMS, DAMBRK-FLDWAV simulation model. As the result of the rainfall-runoff simulation, the lancet flood amount of the Yeoncheon Dam site was $10,324\;m^3/sec$ and the total outflow was $1,263.90\;million\;m^3$. For the dam failure time estimation, 13 scenarios were assumed including dam failure duration time and starting time, which reviewed to the runoff results. The simulation time was established with 30 minutes intervals between one o'clock to 4 o'clock in the morning on August 1, 1999 for the setup standard for each case of the dam failure time estimation, considering the arrival time of the flood, when the actually measured water level was sharply raising at Jeongok station area of the Yeoncheon Dam downstream, As results, dam failure arrival time could be estimated at 02:45 a.m., August 1st 1999 and duration time could be also 30 minutes. Those results and procedure could suggest how and when dam failure occurs and analyzes.

Stability analysis of a tunnel excavated in weak rocks and the optimal design for the support pattern (연약지반내 굴착터널의 안정성 평가 및 최적보강설계에 관한 연구)

  • Geological and geotechnical surveys, in general, should precede the excavation to ensure the safety of the tunnel and should be followed up according to the various geological condition during the excavation. However actually the standard support patterns which were decided during the design step used be insisted for the whole excavation steps in spite of the various geological conditions. OO tunnel was excavated with NATM and a support pattern type-V in weak rocks. When the tunnel was excavated up to 25m long, the severe displacement was generated in the portal area and the shotcrete was damaged to make the cracks and the tunnel face was totally collapsed. It might happen owing to the one-day heavy rain, but the exact reason for that accident should be found out and the new optimal support patternt needed. Consequently three dimensional numerical analysis was applied for the evaluation of the cause of the tunnel collapse instead of two dimensional analysis, because three dimensional analysis can show better the real field phenomenon than two dimensional analysis in which the load distribution methods are adopted for the tunnel excavation. We could simulate the actual situations with three dimensional finite difference code and propose the new optimal support patterns.

  • In Korea more than ninety bridges are collapsed every year by flood, which causes the scour of pier foundation. Researches on the quantitative assessment method to assess the integrity of bridge against scour have not been organized systematically in the bridge design practice and maintenance area. In this study, dynamic characteristics assessment experiments are carried out as an emergency inspection method to assess the integrity of the pier foundation for scour after a flood. According to the dynamic characteristics assessment experiment, which simulates foundation scour of the spread footing pier, foundation scour can be evaluated by the first mode natural frequency of the pier.

Occurrence of Eggplant Scab Caused by Cladosporium cucumerinum in Korea

  • A scab disease on eggplant (Solanum melongena L. cv. Chukyang) in plastic film houses around Kimhae area in Korea during the winter season of 0998-1999. The disease started on leaves with small dark brown spots which were gradually expanded to 1 to 3 mm diameter lesions. Later, the central parts of the lesions became collapsed and detached to make holes. Dark brown mold was grown out of the lesions on the lower side of leaf. Numerous conidia were produced on the lower side of leaf. Numerous conidia were produced on the diseased leaves and appeared to be readily dispersed in the air. A fungus was isolated from the diseased leaves, and tested for Koch's postulates to prove the causal agent of the desease. The isolated fungus grew on potato dextrose agar, forming greenish black to pale brown colonies. Conidia were ellipsoidal, fusiform or subspherical, mostly one-celled but occasionally septated, and formed in long branched chains on the erected conidiophores which were pale olevaceous brown and variable in length between 12.4 and $393.4\mu\textrm{g}$. The fungus was identified as Cladosporium cucumerinum Ellis Arthur based on the above morphological characteristics examined. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and conidial formation was about 20 to $25^{\circ}$. In addition to cucumber, the fungus was also pathogenic to watermelon, pumpkin and oriental melon. This is the first report on the scab disease of eggplant in Korea.
