  • There were two transmission tower collapses due to Typhoon 'Maemi' in 2003. The reason that a collapse was happened was excessive wind load. One was buckled in the leg part and the other was buckled in the middle bracing part. To investigate a steel transmission tower failure mechanism, 2nd order nonlinear analysis should be performed. Considering the effect of initial imperfection and theresidual stress of angle section during nonlinear analysis, this study can estimate the ultimate strength and the ultimate behavior of the transmission tower.

  • The recent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway bridge structures. In particular, it has been demonstrated that concrete columns with inadequate lateral reinforcement contributed to the catastrophic collapse of many bridges. The poor detailing of the starter bars in these columns compounded the problem of seismic deficiency. Therefore, this study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel and confinement steel type for the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Eight concrete columns were constructed with existing scale as diameter, 1.2m and height, 4.8m. 4 confinement steel types were adopted for seismic performance evaluation. All specimens were rested under inelastic cyclic loading while simultaneously subjected to a constant axial load. The longitudinal steel lap-splice is highly effective in seismic performance deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • To gain more knowledge of aluminum foam sandwich structure and promote the engineering application, aluminum foam sandwich consisting of 7050 matrix aluminum foam core and 304 stainless steel face-sheets was studied under three-point bending by WDW-T100 electronic universal tensile testing machine in this work. Results showed that when aluminum foam core was reinforced by 304 steel face-sheets, its load carrying capacity improved dramatically. The maximum load of AFS in three-point bending increased with the foam core density or face-sheet thickness monotonically. And also when foam core was reinforced by 304 steel panels, the energy absorption ability of foam came into play effectively. There was a clear plastic platform in the load-displacement curve of AFS in three-point bending. No crack of 304 steel happened in the present tests. Two collapse modes appeared, mode A comprised plastic hinge formation at the mid-span of the sandwich beam, with shear yielding of the core. Mode B consisted of plastic hinge formation both at mid-span and at the outer supports.

  • The aim of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of ultimate the fatigue strength of hopper knuckles in merchant vessels carrying bulk cargo or LNG/LPG/ The ultimate strength test is undertaken on the hopper knuckle model, subject to end tip load. A series of fatigue tests are carried out on the hopper knuckle models varying the level of the nominal stresses. The elasto-plastic finite element analysis is performed to examine the distribution of hot spot stresses near weld toe and also the progressive collapse behavior of the test model. S-N curves are developed based on the fatigue test results.

  • In the case of reinforced concrete beams strengthening by steel plate, sometimes these beams collapse due to the stress concentration at the ends of steel plates before the design expected failure. This kind of failure is called premature failure. This study analyzes the behavior of strengthened RC beams to control premature failure of these plated beams with either changing the geometries at the ends of plates or strengthening steel plates beside the ends. The results from the former cases show that, the effect of expanded plates sections at the ends was very small, and the beams which are rounded the ends of plates effectively increased the initial rip-off loads about 14% compared with control beam but the ultimate loads was almost same. However, the beams in the latter cases effectively increased the initial and the ultimate rip-off loads with changing failure mode, especially around 14~19% in the ultimate rip-off load comparing with control beam.

  • We model the torsional oscillation of a suspension bridge, which is the forced sine-Cordon equation on a bounded domain. We use finite difference method to solve nonlinear partial differential equation numerically. The partial differential equation has multiple periodic solutions. Whether the span oscillates with small or large amplitude depends oかy on its initial displacement and velocity. Moreover, we observe that the qualitative properties are consistent with the behavior observed at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on the day of its collapse.

  • In the design of ductile moment-resisting frames (DMRFs) following the strong column-weak beam dsign philosophy, it is desirable that the joint and column remain essentially elastic in order to insure proper energy dissipation and lateral stability of the structure. The joint has been identified as the "weak link" in DMRFs because any stiffness or strength deterioration in this region can lead to substantial drifts and the possibility of collapse due to P-delta effects. Moreover, the engineer is faced with the difficult task of detailing an element whose size is determined by the framing members, but which must resist a set of loads very different from those used in the design of the beams and columns. Four 2/3-scale beam-column-slab joint assemblies were designed according to existing code requirements of ACI 318-89, representing interior joints of DMRFs with reinforced high strength concrete. The influence on aseismic behavior of beam-column joints due to monolithic slab, has been investigated.estigated.

  • Collapsible soil presents a porous unsaturated structure, its sudden settlement after humidification, without supplementary charge, can be of a big nuisance for the foundations and therefore for the constructions built on it. To improve its structure and limit its instability, samples of laboratory reconstituted soil, with different percentages of water contents and compacted at different compaction energies, were treated with glass-fiber. The study of the mechanical behavior was performed by oedometer tests. The microstructure was explored by the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results obtained show clearly the efficiency of the treatment with glass fiber on reducing the collapsibility of such soil.

  • Along with series of concrete block experiments, a demolition experiment was conducted for a scaled concrete box girder bridge to investigate collapse and blast behavior. Tri nitro toluene (TNT), the standard explosive for strength was adopted as concussion charge. The result show that demolition was caused by not only direct detonation pressures at charging spots but also blast pressures at inner wall of concrete box girder.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the ultimate strength and behavior of triangular and rectangular frames in steel towers. Investigations of collapse mechanism including local and global failures of partial frame are carried out through finite element analysis and small scaled experiments. Ultimate strength and deformation are investigated in case of shape variations with change of the interior and exterior frames. The efficiency of rectangular frame saving sub-brace members are verified with comparisons of the ultimate strength of triangular frames.
