  • The main objectives of this research are to analyse and evaluate the demolishing walls initiative in Daegu city as the collaborative urban environment improvement initiative in South Korea using the actor network theory concept. Local authorities are unable to effectively and efficiently improve urban environment because of their limited statutory and financial powers. This inability crucially led to the formation of the demolishing walls initiative in Daegu city with building a coalition of the local people, interest groups and public and non-governmental organisations in the operational processes in order to improve the physical and social urban environments. Furthermore, co-ordination between local authorities and landscape architecture specialists not only to change the way in which they tackle urban environmental problems but also to make the local people aware of their potential ability in positively improving the urban environment.

  • In this study, we investigated the perception of elementary school students on inquiry activities and collaborative problem-solving ability in data-based scientific inquiry. For this purpose, 20 data-based scientific inquiry classes were conducted in 26 elementary school students in Gyeongnam City. After selecting the inquiry problem, students conducted an inquiry process to collect data using digital inquiry instruments. The following results were obtained through questionnaires and interviews after the classes: First, students perceived the step on 'inquiry design and execution' as the most useful in the data-based scientific inquiry. Second, students perceived that their scientific ability and cooperation improved through data-based scientific inquiry, with the selection of inquiry problems being the most difficult. Third, students perceived positively the improvement of cooperative problem-solving ability. From the above results, it was found that data-based scientific inquiry is necessary to improve the elementary school students' scientific inquiry ability and cooperative problem-solving ability. Based on this research, we hope that the development and research of various inquiry activities will provide opportunities for inquiry that can cultivate various abilities needed for students living in the future.

  • Hierarchical constraints and constraint satisfaction were analyzed in order to solve the problem of conflict detection in collaborative design. The constraints were divided into two sets: one set consisted of known constraints and the other of unknown constraints. The constraints of the two sets were detected with corresponding methods. The set of the known constraints was detected using an interval propagation algorithm, a back propagation (BP) neural network was proposed to detect the set with the unknown constraints. An immune algorithm (IA) was utilized to optimize the weights and the thresholds of the BP neural network, and the steps were designed for the optimization process. The results of the simulation indicated that the BP neural network that was optimized by IA has a better performance in terms of convergent speed and global searching ability than a genetic algorithm. The constraints were described using the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for computers to be able to automatically recognize and establish the constraint network. The implementation of the conflict detection system was designed based on constraint satisfaction. A wind planetary gear train is taken as an example of collaborative design with a conflict detection system.

  • Tabletop games have been applied to improve the ability of social collaboration based on the characteristics that more than two people simultaneously interact on the tabletop. Especially, the tabletop games can be used as an educational tool for children with autism when it is implemented by considering educational and psychological models for children's behavioral characteristics. However, the previous collaborative games were designed for only disabled children so that it is hard to reflect cognitive and humanistic effects in inclusive education, where disabled children and non-disabled children interact in a same spatiotemporal environment. In this paper, therefore, we design a collaborative game on a multi-touch tabletop to enable spontaneous communication between disabled children and non-disabled children. Through user study, we evaluate the improvement in terms of the positive interaction and the degree of attention by comparing with a conventional collaborative game(e.g., a board game). We found that negative interaction including disabled children's abnormal behavior decreased and positive interaction such as body gestures and verbal communications increased. In addition, the tabletop game supported high immersiveness to all children by deriving equal level of attention time including individual and joint attention. We anticipate that the proposed game design can be utilized to develop collaborative contents for people with differences on sociality and cognitive ability.

  • Prediction of the time-related traits of pebble flow inside pebble-bed HTGRs is of great significance for reactor operation and design. In this work, an image-driven approach with the aid of a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to predict the remaining time of initially loaded pebbles and the time interval of paired flow images of the pebble bed. Two types of strategies are put forward: one is adding FC layers to the classic classification CNN models and using regression training, and the other is CNN-based deep expectation (DEX) by regarding the time prediction as a deep classification task followed by softmax expected value refinements. The current dataset is obtained from the discrete element method (DEM) simulations. Results show that the CNN-aided models generally make satisfactory predictions on the remaining time with the determination coefficient larger than 0.99. Among these models, the VGG19+DEX performs the best and its CumScore (proportion of test set with prediction error within 0.5s) can reach 0.939. Besides, the remaining time of additional test sets and new cases can also be well predicted, indicating good generalization ability of the model. In the task of predicting the time interval of image pairs, the VGG19+DEX model has also generated satisfactory results. Particularly, the trained model, with promising generalization ability, has demonstrated great potential in accurately and instantaneously predicting the traits of interest, without the need for additional computational intensive DEM simulations. Nevertheless, the issues of data diversity and model optimization need to be improved to achieve the full potential of the CNN-aided prediction tool.
