  • This study conducted a case study on the process-centered evaluation competency of a middle-school/high-school science teacher using Teacher's Process-centered Evaluation Competency (T-PEC) measurement tool. The case analysis shows that teacher A in a middle school represents high competency of process-centered evaluation planning and cooperative communication while the competency of utilizing process-centered evaluation results is low owing to the characteristics of non-standardized areas. Teacher B in a high school shows high level of cooperative communication competency whereas low level of process-centered evaluation execution competency because the freedom given to students is not enough during the process of evaluation. The teacher also shows very low level of utilizing process-centered evaluation results due to the lack of time and the school culture not giving feedback to the students. According to cross-case analysis, teacher A and B both represent the highest level of collaborative communication competency and the lowest level of utilization process-centered evaluation results competency. And the lack of clear criteria for process-centered evaluation leads to different understanding of process-centered evaluation between the two teachers, and teacher B shows low the level of utilizing process-centered evaluation affects results due to the students not being concerned on feedback, security problem, and the reality focusing on the university entrance examination in high schools. Based on the results, this study suggests providing clear guidelines of process-centered evaluation to teachers, introducing an application in order to solve the time-lack problem pointed out as the biggest problem of process-centered evaluation, ensuring objectivity and security about process-centered evaluation results, and building the school culture such as the expanded application of standardized areas in order to implementing process-centered evaluation.

  • This study explores the social phenomenon of the universalization of one-person households through a literature analysis and text mining in order to explore a future direction for Home Economics Education(HEE) development in the one-person household era. From 2010 to 2018, texts from newspaper articles and book content of one-person households were analyzed through R program. The results of the study are as follows. In order to develop students' competency to live a happy life in the one-person household era, it is necessary to: (1) expand the preemptive and collaborative research of HEE, (2) develop and operate a curriculum to raise the living competency to live alone, (3) expand opportunities for secondary school students as well as off-campus youth, middle-aged, and elderly students, and (4) develop various HEE's elective curriculum focusing on the ability to live as one-person household. Also, (5) in order to overcome the psychological and social poverty and isolation of one-person households, HEE should strengthen the learner's ability to form relationships through self-esteem, care of others, community life, communication and conflict resolution education. In conclusion, HEE's independent living competency, relationship formation competency, and practical problem solving competency are all necessary competencies to live in one-person households. In this study, it is meaningful to suggest a future direction for HEE and to use new research methods such as word cloud techniques in the absence of HEE's previous research in relation to the increase of one-person households.

  • The purpose of this study is to support the understandings of teachers about the instructional strategies of collaborative problem solving and mathematical modeling as presented in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. For this, tasks of the Cubes unit from six grader's and lesson plans were developed. The specific problem solving processes of students and the practices of teachers which appeared in the classes were analyzed. In the course of solving a series of problems, students have formed a mathematical model of their own, modifying and complementing models in the process of sharing solutions. In particular, it was more effective when teachers explicitly taught students how to share and discuss problem-solving. Based on these results this study is expected to suggest implications on how to foster students' problem solving ability as mathematical subject competency in elementary classrooms.

  • Elementary mathematics textbooks present contents for enhancing problem solving competency. Still, teachers find teaching problem solving to be challenging. To understand the supports textbooks are suggesting, this study examined tasks from the challenging/thinking and inquiry mathematics. We analyzed 288 mathematical activities based on an analytic framework from the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. Then, we employed latent class analysis to classify 83 mathematical tasks as a new approach to categorize tasks. As a result, execution of the problem solving process was emphasized across grade levels but understanding of problems was varied by grade levels. In addition, higher grade levels had more opportunities to be engaged in collaborative problem solving and problem posing. We identified three task profiles: 'execution focus', 'collaborative-solution focus', 'multifaceted-solution focus'. In Grade 3, about 80% of tasks were categorized as the execution profile. The multifaceted-solution was about 40% in the thinking/challenging mathematics and the execution profile was about 70% in Inquiry mathematics. The implications for developing mathematics textbooks and designing mathematical tasks are discussed.

  • In a rapidly changing society with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, future students should have the skills to utilize and organize high-quality knowledge, not the amount of knowledge. With the launch of the revised curriculum in 2015, the curriculum has been reorganized based on competency and the software education has been seeking capabilities such as 'Cultural computing knowledge', 'Computational thinking', and 'Collaborative problem solving skills'. Therefore, practical collaboration tools and education programs that can be used in the field of education are developed based on Pair Programming, which is a specific collaborative learning strategy to develop cooperative problem solving skill. The educational program using this collaboration tool was developed with a focus on developing computational thinking and collaborative problem solving skills through Pair Programming rather than focusing on learning grammar of programming language and programming techniques. In a educational program, students will be able to use collaborative tools for pair programming and foster collaborative problem-solving skills.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic had substantial negative impacts and caused several disruptions to the global supply chain of the shipping industry. The key challenges identified in terms of maritime manpower are the Certificates of Competency (CoC) or the expiration and/or failure to complete refresher and/or revalidation courses, which directly hinder employment retention and lost opportunities at sea. To tackle this issue directly and swiftly, the creation of the APEC SEN Distance Learning Platform was suggested and approved by APEC as part of an official project. This paper introduces the APEC-wide accessible distance learning platform with the following key topics: the organisation and operation of the platform, the themes and content to be prioritised, the process of education, training, certification, and the ways to promote accreditation, mutual recognition on CoC, education and training videos by taking collaborative actions, and the development of content.
