Social media (SM) for expressing thoughts and opinions of people in network communities can support collaboration among stakeholders in business activities. To enhance collaboration for product design, this study integrates SM with a product data management (PDM) system that manages main product development processes and data in manufacturing companies. This study proposes a text messaging SM model that shares core components of PDM systems and uses product structures in PDM systems as networks for SM broadcasting. The SM model is implemented with a research purpose PDM system and applied to product design experiments to show feasibility of the proposed SM model in PDM systems.
Marine equipment makers today face a multitude of challenges including the needs of an internal system for easy management of their business processes and a collaboration system to streamline communications with the parent company, increasing product complexity and heightened requirements for information technology. In this research, a BPM-ERP system called Biz $Tower^{(R)}$ was implemented based on cloud computing for especially, small and medium marine equipment makers to standardize and visualize the entire business process from order placement to release. This system also provides their parent company with visibility into the status of orders and user can easily access the system on the web at a low price through cloud computing service. Thus far, this paper demonstrates the applicability of Biz $Tower^{(R)}$ to improve management visibility, process performance, and collaboration with the parent company for small and medium marine equipment makers.
The importance of simulation of plastic flow in the injection mold is increasing as the parts are more complex, but the small-scale enterprises can't afford to invest for the infra individually. CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) service was naturally born based on these needs. This paper presents the engineering collaboration model between the large and the small/medium enterprises in the field of injection molds. Based on the engineering collaboration hub and CAE service, small-scale enterprises could research the necessary technology and develop the proper products. The analysis results of CAE are provided by the integrated visualization system on the web. This paper also deals with the delivery shorting process of CAE service for electric/electronic parts which should meet the needs of customers as soon as possible.
The rapid development and diversification of technology require that firms should adjust and cope with a high degree of uncertainty regarding independent efforts in technology development. An alternative to these strategic responses is the R&D or technological collaborations among firms. There have been many researches on the reasons for and effects of these collaborative relationships; however, research examining the risks involved in the process of collaboration is lacking. The researches into essential prerequisites for successful technological collaborations have remained more or less premature despite of the increasing demand for interfirm R&D collaborations. In other words, the existing literature has mainly focused on the choice of collaborations, but has paid little attention to the processes of collaborations. This study tries to identify and integrate both success and risk factors affecting the decision making of whether collaborations are attempted or not and R&D collaboration processes. Finally, a model of interfirm collaborations is suggested and also practical implications for the firms which consider R&D collaboration with other firms are provided.
Building resilient community is often a complicated process to be gained by interorganizational collaboration. Since patterns of interorganizational relations among governments and sectors are constantly changing due to internal and external factors in the field of emergency management, understanding the dynamic nature of interorganizational collaboration is a critical step for improving a community’s ability to bounce back from a catastrophic event. From two theoretical perspectives, this research aims to examine the essential role of working across levels of governments and sectors in building resilient community by focusing on sources of community resiliency and a strong commitment. The empirical evidence highlights the importance of studying resilience as a way to understand the motivation and incentive for organizations to work jointly during emergency response. The study of organizational resilience also draws attention for the importance of various forms of interorganizational collaboration such as formal and informal relations. It also highlights how local organizations can utilize their relations to seek resources without necessarily jeopardizing their ability to perform their core organizational functions.
This paper proposes the distributed virtual environment framework for collaboration between heterogeneous platforms. The proposed system consists of Client, Content Server(CS), and Reflector Server(RS). The Client is composed of VR library(VRL), Interaction Manager(IM), Distributed Interaction Manager(DIM), and Network Interface(NI). The proposed Client structure can support various display environments. The XML-based IM and DIM lets the users define and add the interactions. The proposed Server structure synchronizes the distributed interaction between heterogeneous platforms and provides transparency to the users. Therefore, the proposed framework enables the users to implement virtual collaboration environment for their tasks. Moreover, it can also be used for research and development activities between a large number of the remote users. The usefulness of the framework was verified by applying it to the virtual heritage tour system.
Collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) is the most recent successful management initiative that provides supply chain collaboration. By adopting CPFR, companies can dramatically improve the effectiveness of supply chain. The CPFR process has three major sub-processes; planning, forecasting and replenishment, which are formed by a number of steps. Despite the existence of a detailed and comprehensive process model, which is published by the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards Association, in practice CPFR can take a number of different forms. Therefore, this research suggests that business process management system (BPMS) can be utilized as a base system on which a CPFR is consistently constructed and implemented, regardless of a number of its possible forms. We illustrate how a CPFR protype is implemented by using a BPMS and then describe how the prototype is agilely extended to adopt a variety of changes of CPFR collaboration process.
Firms often collaborate on building an infrastructure, which benefits all the firms in the industry, although in unequal magnitudes. Then a difficult and tricky issue is concerned with 'free riding.' Should there be only 'common, i.e., industry-wide' benefits in such collaboration, the literature indicated that the free rider problem is unavoidable, In this paper, however, we suggest that while collaborating, the firm also learns firm-specific knowledge, experience, and know-how, which can be directly utilized for its own internal improvement. That is, the collaboration between firms provides them with not only 'industry-wide,' but also 'firm-specific' benefits, Our analysis shows that if there indeed exist two types of benefits simultaneously, depending on the balance between the two, the free rider problem can be mitigated or even eliminated.
The Physics Outreach Unit at UNSW Australia contributes to the goals of the IAU's Commission 55 by collaborating with established institutions to improve public engagement with science. We aim to not only increase public awareness of astronomy but also ensure the benefits to society of our scientific endeavours are understood. We have found collaborating with like-minded institutions who are working in similar spaces allows both parties to make a larger impact than working alone. For example, our long-term collaboration with the Australian Museum provides the opportunity to engage urban and rural communities with science, audiences to which we do not normally have easy access. To increase our national presence we are exploring new relationships with other institutions, in particular the Astronomical Society of Australia (ASA), in hosting events such as public talks with eminent astronomers, star parties and astronomical workshops. These partnerships help build firm foundations for planning future events, in particular during the International Year of Light 2015.
Recently, the aging society is a serious problem; we paid attention to the welfare and a disaster prevention cyber city. In this research, we propose the validity of Safe Human Cooperation Mobility System in Collaboration with Cyber City, and show Vehicle Warehousing Support System as an example.
