An electrical steel strip is commonly used as a core material in all types of electric transformers and motors. It is produced by a cold rolling process. In this paper, a damage-mechanics-based approach that predicts the edge fracture of an electrical steel strip during cold rolling is presented. We adopted the normal tensile stress criterion and the fracture energy method as a damage initiation criterion and a damage evolution scheme, respectively. We employed finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate crack initiation and propagation at the initial notch located at the edges of the strip. The material constants required in FEA were experimentally obtained by tensile tests using a standard and a notched sheet-type specimen. The results reveal that the edge crack was initiated at the entrance of the roll bite and that it rapidly evolved at the exit. The evolution length of the edge crack increased as the length of the initial notch as well as the front tension reel force of the strip increased.
The effect of annealing temperature on the martensitic transformation behavior, tensile deformation chracteristics and shape recovery etc., has been studied in TiNi based shape memory ribbon fabricated by coldrolling of wire. TiNi based shape memory wire (${\phi}=500{\mu}m$) of which structure is intermetallic compound could be cold-rolled without process annealing up to the reduction rate in thickness of 50%, but a few cracks appear in cold-rolled ribbon in the reduction rate in thickness of 65%. The $B2{\rightarrow}R{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$ martensitic transformation or $B2{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$ martensitic transformation occurs in annealing conditions dissipating lattice defects introduced by coldrolling. However, in case of higher reduction rate or lower annealing temperature, martensitic transformation in cold-rolled and then annealed ribbons does not occur. The maximum shape recovery rate of cold-rolled ribbons with the reduction rate of 35 and 65% could be achieved at annealing temperatures of 250 and $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The shape recovery rate seems to be related to the stress level of plateau region on stress-strain curve.
This study evaluated the enhancement of microstructural and mechanical properties of a cross rolled Ni-10Cr alloy, comparing with conventionally rolled material. Cold rolling was carried out to 90% thickness reduction and the specimens were subsequently annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to obtain a fully recrystallized microstructure. Cross roll rolling was carried out at a tilted roll mill condition of $5^{\circ}$ from the transverse direction in the RD-TD plane. In order to observe the deformed microstructures of the cold rolled materials, transmission electron microscopy was employed. For annealed materials after rolling, in order to investigate the grain boundary characteristic distributions, an electron back-scattering diffraction technique was applied. Application of cold rolling to the Ni-10Cr alloy contributed to notable grain refinement, and consequently the average grain size was refined from 135 ${\mu}m$ in the initial material to 9.4 and 4.2 ${\mu}m$ in conventionally rolled and cross rolled materials, respectively, thus showing more significantly refined grains in the cross rolled material. This refined grain size led to enhanced mechanical properties such as yield and tensile strengths, with slightly higher values in the cross rolled material. Furthermore, the <111>//ND texture in the CRR material was better developed compared to that of the CR material, which contributed to enhanced mechanical properties and formability.
The annealing characteristics of a cold rolled Al-6.5Mg-1.5Zn alloy newly designed as an automobile material is investigated in detail. The aluminum alloy in the ingot state is cut to a thickness of 4 mm, a total width of 30 mm and a length of 100 mm and then reduced to a thickness of 1 mm (reduction of 75 %) by multi-pass rolling at room temperature. Annealing after rolling is performed at temperatures ranging from 200 to $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The tensile strength of the annealed material tends to decrease with the annealing temperature and shows a maximum tensile strength of 482MPa in the material annealed at $200^{\circ}C$. The tensile elongation of the annealed material increases with the annealing temperature, while the tensile strength does not, and reaches a maximum value of 26 % at the $350^{\circ}C$ annealed material. For the microstructure, recovery and recrystallization actively occur as the annealing temperature increases. The recrystallization begins to occur at $300^{\circ}C$ and is completed at $350^{\circ}C$, which results in the formation of a fine grained structure. After the rolling, the rolling texture of {112}<111>(Cu-Orientation) develops, but after the annealing a specific texture does not develop.

In this paper an finite element approach for the edge crack analysis of silicon-steel sheet during cold rolling is presented. Based on the damage mechanics, the proposed approach follows the analysis steps which are composed of damage initiation, damage evolution and fracture. Through those steps, we can find out the initiation instant of crack and resulting propagated length and shape of the crack. The material constants related to fracture is experimentally obtained by tension tests using standard sheet-type specimen and notched sheet-type specimen. To evaluate the prediction accuracy, we performed a pilot rolling test with a initially notched sheets. It is shown that the results obtained by the approach converged to the experimental one concerning about the direction and length of propagated crack. The capability of the proposed one is demonstrated through the application to the actual silicon-steel rolling mill.
Experiment on roughness and micro pit defects of SUS 430 ferrite stainless steel was investigated in laboratory. The relation between roughness and glossiness with reduction in height, roll surface roughness, emulsion parameters was analyzed. The surface morphology of micro pit defects was observed by SEM, and the effects of micro pit defects on rolling reduction, roll surface roughness, emulsion parameters, lubrication oil in deformation zone and work roll diameter were discussed. With the increasing of reduction ratio strip surface roughness Ra(s), Rp(s) and Rv(s) were decreasing along rolling and width direction, the drop value in rolling direction was faster than that in width direction. The roughness and glossiness were obtained under emulsion concentration 3% and 6%, temperature $55^{\circ}C$ and $63^{\circ}C$, roll surface roughness $Ra(r)=0.5{\mu}m$, $Ra(r)=0.7{\mu}m$ and $Ra(r)=1.0{\mu}m$. The glossiness was declined rapidly when the micro defects ratio was above 23%. With the pass number increasing, the micro pit defects were reduced, uneven peak was decreased and gently along rolling direction. The micro pit defects were increased with the roll surface roughness increase. The defects ratio was declined with larger gradient at pass number 1 to 3, but gentle slope at pass number 4 to 5. When work roll diameter was small, bite angle was increasing, lubrication oil in micro pit of deformation zone was decreased, micro defects were decreased, and glossiness value on the surface of strip was increased.
The mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of Mg-8Li-3Al-1Y alloy undergoing different rolling processes were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction, optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy as well as electron backscattered diffraction were used for tracking the microstructure evolution. Tensile testing was employed to characterize the mechanical properties. After hot rolling, the $MgLi_2Al$ precipitated in ${\beta}-Li$ matrix due to the transformation reaction: ${\beta}-Li{\rightarrow}{\beta}-Li+MgLi_2Al+{\alpha}-Mg$. As for the alloy subjected to annealed hot rolling, ${\beta}-Li$ phase was clearly recrystallized while recrystallization rarely occurred in ${\alpha}-Mg$ phase. With regard to the microstructure undergoing cold rolling, plenty of dislocations and dislocation walls were easily observed. In addition, the microstructure of alloys subjected to annealed cold rolling revealed the formation of new fresh ${\alpha}-Mg$ grains in ${\beta}-Li$ phase due to the precipitation reaction. The mechanical properties and fracture modes of Mg-8Li-3Al-1Y alloys can be effectively tuned by different rolling processes.

The formation of preferred orientations in cold rolled and recrystallized Inconel 690 sheets was studied by the x-ray texture measurements and TEM observations. The increasing{220} pole intensity in the plane normal at the higher reductions was related to the{110}<112> texture component. The rolling texture of the Inconel 690 was the pure metal type. THe dislocation cells were found in the near{110}<112> oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111>oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111> oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111> oriented grains caused the weakening of {112}<111> and the development of {552}<115> in the rolling texture. The annealing texture of the Inconel 690 sheets was dependent on the annealing temperature. The annealing texture of 750$^{\circ}C$ annealed sheets was similar to the cold rolling texture. The major preferred orientations of the 950$^{\circ}C$ annealed specimens were {112}<110> and {001}<110>. The formation of fine and closely spaced annealing twins in the specimen annealed at 1150$^{\circ}C$ led to the randomization of the annealing texture.

A disturbance rejection controller using eccentricity filtering and LQ control techniques is proposed to alleviate significantly the effect of roll eccentricity in multivariable cold-rolling processes. Fundamental problems such as process time delay inherent in exit thickness measurement and non-stationary characteristics of roll eccentricity signals can be overcome by the proposed control method. The filtered instantaneous estimate of roll eccentricity may be exploited to improve instantaneous estimate of the exit thickness variation based on roll force and roll gap mearsurements, and a feedforward compensator is augmented as a reference for a gaugemeter thickness estimator. And, LQ feedback controller is combined with eccentricity filter for the attenuation of the exit thickness variation due to the entry thickness variation. The simulation results show that eccentricity components have been significantly eliminated and simultaneously other distrubances also have been attenuated.
