  • The microstructure of a newly developed alloy tool steel (KV1) for casting cold-work press dies was analyzed using advanced scanning electron microscopy. Its mechanical properties and durability in use as piercing inserts were tested. It contained a continuous network structure which originated from the micro-segregation during solidification and was composed of retained austenite and primary carbides. However, after quenching and tempering, its continuity was destroyed due to the decomposition of austenite. The discontinuous spatial distribution and the smaller amount of primary carbide in the network presented KV1 enhanced ductility compared to the common alloy (HK700). The reduced C and Cr, the addition of V resulted in a small amount of primary carbides which primarily consisted of MC, as well as fine and uniform dispersion of precipitates. Owing to these features, KV1 exhibited delayed initiation of chipping when used for piercing inserts.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is aimed at diagnosing and suggesting treatment plans for commonly seen clinical manifestation of heat symptom in the upper body and coldness in the lower body, also known as hot above, cold below syndrome. Methods Various reasons attribute to the presence of hot above, cold below syndrome, but mainly contributed by blockage of normal Qi flow by abnormality of heart-kidney root, spleen-stomach axis, and liver-lung axis. Diagnosing these abnormalities and timely alleviation to the healthy state is presented in the study. Results 1For heat in the upper body, Huang Lian Jie Du Tang(黃連解毒湯), CF, or JsD pharmacopuctures are injected on GB21, GB20. Qi stagnation in the thoracic area is treated with BUM injection on CV17. For impairment of transportation and transformation in the middle energizer, BUM pharmacopuncture is injected on CV12. Coldness in the lower energizer was relieved by bee venom or Sweet BV(Bee Venom free from enzymes) on CV6. Conclusion Above proposed methods of regulating water-fire were effective in treating hot above, cold below syndrome in clinical manifestations. But once the symptom subsides, treatment focused on eliminating innate cause should be rendered to achieve more successful results.

  • The hardness of cold-forged products is in close relationship with its effective strain. This study presented the estimating method of hardness for cold-forged SKH9 products without hardness tests in view of resistance to plastic deformation using finite element code, DEFORM$^{TM}$. The flow stress equation obtained from the compression test was only used as a basic data to estimate the relationship between effective strain and hardness. In addition, this new estimating method was applied to the cold-forged product which was widely used in industrial field to show the feasibility. As a result, the predicted hardness numbers through FE simulation showed good agreement with the measured hardness numbers. It is possible to estimate the hardness not by hardness tests, but by only computer simulations for the deformed products. Also, effective strain values were possibly estimated by measuring hardness numbers, and vice versa.

  • The promoter region flanking the 5’ CAZFP1 coding region was isolated from the genomic DNA of Capsicum annuum. To identify the upstream region of the CAZFP1 gene required for promoter activity, a series of CAZFP1 promoter deletion derivatives was created. Each deletion construct was analyzed by Agrobacterium-mediated transient transformation in tobacco leaves after infection by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, or treatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA), ethylene, abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), cold and wounding. Promoter fragments of 685 bp or longer showed 7-fold or greater induction after P. s. pv. tabaci infection and MeJA treatment. The CAZFP1 full-length promoter (-999 bp) also showed 6-fold induction in response to ethylene. The transiently transformed tobacco leaves with the CAZFP1 full length promoter fused-GUS gene showed more than 5-fold induction in response to SA, ABA and cold. These results suggest that the CAZFP1 promoter contains responsive elements for pathogen, MeJA, ethylene, SA, ABA and cold.

  • The effects of the annealing parameters on microstructures were examined in a cold-rolled high strength steel containing 0.1% C, 0.5% Si, 1.5% Mn, and 0.04% Nb. It was impossible to avoid martensite in the microstructure even though the continuous annealing parameters were controlled. This indicates that the alloying elements such as silicon and manganese contributing to manganese equivalent($Mn_{eq}$) should be reduced to produce the ferrite-pearlite microstructure for the solid solution and precipitation hardened steel. It was found that a decrease in the rapid cooling temperature to $520^{\circ}C$ was effective to change the microstructure from ferrite-martensite to ferrite-pearlite-martensite. Typical dual-phase properties exhibiting a low yield ratio and a continuous yielding behavior were obtained when the rapid cooling temperature was in the range of $680^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. The critical volume fraction of martensite for the typical properties of dual-phase steel was about 11 percent.

  • The microstructure of a high-carbon and high-chromium cast steel (HK700) for cold-work die inserts was analyzed by advanced scanning electron microscopy. A continuous network of primary $M_7C_3$ carbide was developed among austenitic matrix after casting. A small amount of $M_2C$ was added to the carbide network owing to the enrichment of Mo and W during the solidification. After quenching in which the austenitization was performed at $1030^{\circ}C$ and double tempering at $520^{\circ}C$, the network structure of $M_7C_3$ was preserved while most of the matrix was transformed to martensite because of additional carbide precipitation. The $M_2C$ in the as-cast microstructure was also transformed to $M_6C$ due to its instability. The continuous network of coarse carbides owing to the absence of hot-working had little influence on the hardness after quenching and tempering, whereas it resulted in severe brittleness upon flexural loading.

  • Mechanical fastening is still one of the main methods used for joining components. Different techniques have been applied to reduce the effect of stress concentration of notches like fastener holes. In this work we evaluate the feasibility of combining laser shock peening (LSP) and cold expansion to improve fatigue crack initiation and propagation of open hole specimens made of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. LSP is a new and competitive technique for strengthening metals, and like cold expansion, induces a compressive residual stress field that improves fatigue, wear and corrosion resistance. For LSP treatment, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with infrared radiation was used. Residual stress distribution as a function of depth was determined by the contour method. Compact tension specimens with a hole at the notch tip were subjected to LSP process and cold expansion and then tested under cyclic loading with R=0.1 generating fatigue cracks on the hole surface. Fatigue crack initiation and growth is analyzed and associated with the residual stress distribution generated by both treatments. It is observed that both methods are complementary; cold expansion increases fatigue crack initiation life, while LSP reduces fatigue crack growth rate.

  • As the large Coolant amount used of a machine holds mass serious trouble recently, an environment pollution is increased, and a machine is conquering large specific gravity in an empty cost plane. It is the stage that must reexamine the parts washing that processing is later with this current way or a problem of a liquid waste treatment back. The environmental problems by using coolant demanded the new cooling methods. As one of them, the studies on the grinding with compressed cold air and oil mist have been done. The cooling method using compressed cold air was effective through going down the temperature of compressed air supplied below -$25^{\circ}C$ and increasing the amount of compressed cold air, but had not enough cooling effect due to the low performance of lubrication. Therefore, the cooling methods using oil mist newly were suggested. This method can satisfy both cooling effect and lubrication with only small amount of coolant, also have the benefit in the point of decreasing the environmental pollution. This paper focused on analyzing the grinding characteristics of the cooling method using oil mist. The grinding test according to compressed cold air and oil mist supply direction were done.

  • In order to measure an antifreezing tolerance, antifreeze proteins accumulated upon cold acclimation in apoplast were analyzed. As Dongborilho were cold-acclimated for 3 to 74 days there was an abrupt increase in apoplastic proteins up to 30 days and then decrease to the similar levels. Among the known antifreeze proteins, CLP produced in E. coli. and TLP purified from apoplast were used to generate antisera that allow to measure and localize the proteins in leaves of barley. The CLP of 27.7 kDa and TLPs of 6, 26, 27, 30, and 31 kDa were increased in their amounts in apoplast as cold treatment being longer. There was a correlation among the amounts of those proteins accumulated in apoplast and freezing tolerance as shown in field and ion leakage tests for five cultivars. The deposit of CLP was localized in the marginal area and the area adjacent to leaf vescular bundle cells in an increasing manner according to duration of cold acclimation but no variation was observed in terms of it's distribution. Based on the close correlation between levels of antifreeze proteins and degrees of freezing tolerance, the immunological methods was to develop to estimate a freezing tolerance in barley.
