A study was made of the effect of cold working and stabilizing temperature on the fatigue properties of Aluminum alloy 5083. The amount of cold working ranged from 14% to 35% and stabilizing temperature was 120.deg. C-160.deg. C. Rotary bending fatigue test was carried out, and it was found that 1) E specimen that had been cold worked by the cold reduction of 35% and stabilized at 160.deg. C for 2 hours was showed the most excellent fatigue limit and endurance ratio and, 2) By the results of the between crack propagation behavior and stress intensity factor, E specimen was showed the better resistance to fatigue crack growth than others.
This study was made of the effect of cold working on the stress corrosion cracking(SCC) of austenitlc 304 stainless steel in boiling 42% $MgCl_2$ solution. For this experiment, specimens cold-worked of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% were fabricated respectively, and then experiments of mechanical properties and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) of these specimens were carried out. The results of these experiments indicate that the maximum resistance to SCC showed at 20% of cold working degree and that the SCC susceptibility depended on the volume fraction of deformation-induced martensite by cold working and the work hardening of matrix. On the other hand, the fracture mode was changed. This phenomenon was considered that deformation-induced martensite was grown from transgranular fracture mode to intergranular fracture mode and caused by increased of dislocation density along the slip planes.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of transformation induced martensite on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy. α' and ε-martensite were formed by cold rolling, and these martensite were formed with according to the specific direction, surface relief and partially intersection. With an increasing degree of cold rolling, amount of α'-martensite was slowly increased, whereas amount of ε-martensite was rapidly increased. Volume fraction of ε-martensite formed by cold working was large than α'-martensite. Tensile strength was rapidly increase and elongation was rapidly decreased with an increasing of degree of cold rolling. This means that tensile strengh and elongation was greatly influenced by the volume fraction of ε-martensite formed by cold rolling then α'-martensite.
The purpose of this study was to define the effects of the finger temperature response according to the daily life of college student. For this study, 31 healthy female college students were taken as a subject group. To define the effects of the finger temperature response, housing style, subjective thermal sensations during daily life in the house and domestic working time were surveyed. The finger temperature response items were measured. The results were as follows. Strong, normal and weak group members were divided according to their cold resistance index(RI) 3, 8, 20 people, repectively. Subjective thermal sensations during daily life in the house affects the cold resistance index(p<.01). The cold resistance index(RI) got higher as domestic working time was increased(p<.05, F-value=3.927). The percentage wearing protective gloves during domestic work in the weak group was higher than the normal or strong groups. Subjective sensations during daily life and domestic working time effected the local cold tolerance, living in a comfortable environment continuously can weaken one's cold tolerance.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of deformation induced martensite on the damping capacity of Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite were formed by cold working, and; deformation induced martensite was formed with according to the specific direction and the surface relief. With an increasing degree of cold rolling, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite increased rapidly, while the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite decreased after rising to a maximum value at a specific level of cold rolling. Damping capacity was increased, and then decreased with an increasing of the degree of cold rolling. Damping capacity was influenced greatly by the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite formed by cold working, but the effect of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite have a actually on effect on the damping capacity.
This study investigates two-phase cooling system of close-loop by using FC-72 and PCM(Phase change material). The cooling system consists of evaporator, cold plate, micro pump, and condenser. The heat input on the performance of evaporator is appreciated by visualizing the boiling on the evaporator. The heat performance of cooling system is investigated to determine the effects of volume fill ratio change at working fluid, pump flow rate change, and volume fill ratio change at PCM in cold plate. Experimental results show the ideal condition when the volume ratio of working fluid, the pump flowing, and the volume ratio of PCM are 60%, 6ml/min, and 60% respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain size on the damping capacity of the Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ were formed by cold working, and these martensites were formed with a specific direction and surface relief. With an increase in grain size, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increased by decrement the austenite phase stability. This volume fraction more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold-rolled. The damping capacity also increased more with the augmentation an increased grain size and more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold rolled. The effect of grain size on the damping capacity was larger in the cold-rolled specimen than the specimen that was not cold-rolled. Damping capacity linearly increased with an increase in volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$. Thus, the damping capacity was affected by the ${\varepsilon}-martensite$.
For semi-solid forging, it is necessarily required to prepare a workpiece with globular microstructure. Among several processes to obtain golbular microstructure, SIMA process is very simple and advantageous with respect to equipment. This paper presents the influence of effective strain on the globularization with aluminium 2024 alloy in cold working stage by SIMA process. Upsetting and forward extrusion are tested for cold working and induction heating is also carried out for reheating to obtain golbular microstructure. Microstructure is observed with an optical microscope. And finite element simulations to obtain effective strain in cold working stage are performed by using commercial finite element code, DEFORM.
In a structure, many components are fastened together using bolts, nuts and rivets through drilled holes. Not only do these fastened joints enable easy assembly and dismantling, they are also able to transfer as well as to distribute loads applied onto the structures. The major drawback of such connections, however, is that the fatigue life of the components is reduced by the presence of the hole since the stress concentration around the hole is increased. In addition, the hole drilling process itself may introduce defects or roughness at the surfaces of the hole that may cause further decrease in fatigue performance of the components. For applications where fatigue loadings are important, one way to compensate the decrease in fatigue life of the components is by introduction of beneficial compressive residual stress around the hole using cold working. The material used for this research were A12024-T351 and A17050-T7451 using the primary member of aircraft. We present, In this paper, the characteristics of coldworking by evaluation of the hole expansion ratio, residual stress distribution, and fatigue properties.
The change of thermal expansion and mechanical behaviors by cold working has been investigated in Fe-29%Ni-17%Co low thermal expansion Kovar alloy. Fe-29%Ni-17%Co alloy was cold rolled gradually and prepared to plates having reduction ratio of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. Annealing effect on the properties was also studied. Thermal expansion was measured from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $5^{\circ}C$/min by using vacuum differential dilatometer. It was found that thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha_{30{\sim}400}$) slightly decreased (reduction ration of 20%) and then remarkably increased (above reduction ration of 40%) with increasing reduction ratio of cold rolling. Thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha_{30{\sim}400}$) was sharply decreased after annealing heat-treatment. Yield and tensile strengths were continuously increased and elongation was decreased by cold roiling. Microstructural observation and X-ray diffraction analysis results showed that the $\alpha$ phase significantly increased as the reduction ratio increased. The slight decrease of thermal expansion coefficient bellow reduction ration of 20% could be explained by the destroying short-range ordering and the decreasing of grain size. The significant increase of thermal expansion coefficient with cold rolling mainly attributed to the appearance of $\alpha$ phase. The correlation between the microstructural cause and invar phenomena for the low thermal expansion behavior was also discussed.
