  • Recent progress in manufacture of hot and cold rolled steel strip products and their applications were reviewed. The main trend in the technological development has been to meet the customers' requests for quality improvement and cost reduction. The weight reduction to reduce the fuel consumption is the main issue in the automotive industry and, therefore, various steels have been developed to improve formability as well as strength. The steels include super-EDDQ steels, bainitic steels, TRIP steels, etc. In the oil industry, efforts have been focused to improve strength together with either low temperature toughness or HIC/SSCC resistance. The packaging industry is also a highly competitive market, and steel and canmaking companies have worked cooperatively to develop cost-effective canmaking processes as well as high performance steels. This type of cooperation has also been found important in other industries such as the appliance and electronic industries for the benefits of both steelmakers and customers.

  • Automatic on-line surface inspection systems have been applied for monitoring a quality of steel strip surfaces. One of the important issues in this application is the performance of on-line defect classifiers. Rule-based classification table methods which are conventionally used for this purpose have been suffered from their low performances. In this work, probabilistic neural networks and the enhanced classification tables which are newly proposed here are applied as alternative on-line classifiers to identify types of surface defects on cold rolled strips. Probabilistic neural networks have shown very excellent performance for classification of surface defects.

  • Measurement methods in order to measure the mechanical properties nondestructively have been studied. The mechanical properties of the structural and turbine rotor steels are related with their magnetic properties. If the magnetic properties of the cold rolled carbon steel sheet (CR) for a car are measured nondestructively, its mechanical properties are analogized by their magnetic properties. And then the mechanical properties are monitored on-line by measuring the magnetic properties. We prepared three CR materials, CBQ 3060, CBQ 3041, and CBQ 3036, were prepared in order to measure their mechanical and magnetic properties. The Vickers hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength were measured by ASTM E 8M, and the reversible magnetic permeability was measured by the surface type probe. The coercivity calculated by the peak interval of reversible magnetic permeability increased linearly with the increase of Vickers hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength. The amplitude of the peak interval of reversible magnetic permeability drastically decreased when the lift-off was increased.

  • Non-fluorinated water repellent coating solutions were obtained using methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and trimethylethoxysilane (TMES) as precursors. The solutions were spin-coated on a cold-rolled steel sheet and cured thermally to prepare water repellent coating films. During this process, the effect of molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was studied for the hydrophobic properties of the coating films. Hydrophobic properties of coating films were characterized using contact angle measurement, surface morphology analysis and infrared spectroscopy. When the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was varied from 0 to 30, the contact angle of the un-coated cold-rolled steel sheet was $30^{\circ}$, whereas when the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was 1, the contact angle increased to $104^{\circ}$ and water repellency was significantly improved. In the case of TMES/MTMS molar ratios of 10, 15, 25 and 30, the contact angles of coating films showed $109^{\circ}$, $114^{\circ}$, $117^{\circ}$ and $144^{\circ}$, respectively. At this time, the hydrophobicity of the coating films was improved by the increase of the surface roughness and the content of the methyl component at the coating surface. In particular, when the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was 30, the overall surface roughness was greatly increased due to the presence of surface particles as well as the water repellency due to methyl groups of TMES, resulting in super hydrophobicity of $144^{\circ}$.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze microstructural changes and evaluate the mechanical properties of TWIP steel subjected to variations in heat treatment, in order to identify optimal process conditions for enhancing the performance of TWIP steel. For this purpose, a homogenization heat treatment was conducted at 1,200 ℃ for 2 h, followed by hot rolling at temperature exceeding 1,100 ℃ and cold rolling. Annealing heat treatment is achieved using a muffle furnace in the range of 600 ℃ to 1,000 ℃. The microstructure characterization was performed with an optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties are evaluated using micro Vickers hardness, tensile test, and ECO index (UTS × Elongation). The specimens annealed at 900 ℃ and 1,000 ℃ experienced a significant decrease in hardness and strength due to decarburization. Consequently, the decarburization phenomenon is closely related to the heat treatment process and mechanical properties of TWIP steel, and the effect of the microstructure change during annealing heat treatment.

  • The Rates of formation and heats of activation for the intermatallic Compound Layers between Cold rolled sheet and molten aluminium &ath (adding small amounts of silicon) has been determined by Continous aluminizing method in the temperature range of 680$^{\circ}$ to 760$^{\circ}C$ and with immerssion time. The structure of the intermetallic Compound Layers was the shape of "Tongues" in pure Al-Bath and Al-Bath Containing 1% Si, But in Al-5% Si Bath was "Band" the Composition of the intermetallic Compound Layers were checked by microhardness measurements and X-Ray probe micro analyzer. FeAl intermetallic Compound layer was found to be uniform in pure Al-Bath and Al-5% Si Bath, But Fe Al intermetallic Compound Layer was shown in Al-1% Si Bath. The growth Rates of the intermetallic Compound Layers was most rapidly increased at Temperatures from 720$^{\circ}$ to 760$^{\circ}C$, at the immorsion time above 60 Second in pure Al-Bath, But in Al-1% Si Bath was solwly increased for the same conditions, and then in Al-5% Si Bath was hardly effected by these experimental condition. Heasts of activation of 29, 46 Kcal per mole which calculuted from Layer growth experiments were found in pure Al-Bath, Al-1% Si Bath respectively.

  • We have developed a automatic surface inspection system for cold Rolled strips in steel making process for several years. We have experienced the various kinds of surface inspection systems, including linear CCD camera type and the laser type inspection system which was installed in cold rolled strips production lines. But, we did not satisfied with these inspection systems owing to insufficient detection and classification rate, real time processing performance and limited line speed of real production lines. In order to increase detection and computing power, we have used the Dark Field illumination with Infra_Red LED, Bright Field illumination with Xenon Lamp, Parallel Computing Processor with Area typed CCD camera and full software based image processing technique for the ease up_grading and maintenance. In this paper, we introduced the automatic inspection system and real time image processing technique using the Object Detection, Defect Detection, Classification algorithms. As a result of experiment, under the situation of the high speed processed line(max 1000 meter per minute) defect detection is above 90% for all occurred defects in real line, defect name classification rate is about 80% for most frequently occurred 8 defect, and defect grade classification rate is 84% for name classified defect.

  • Continuous wave C $O_{2}$ laser beam welding and formability of zinc coated steel plates were investigated. First, the optimal welding condition could be obtained in lap configuration by using the data for heat input, gap size and fracture behaviour. The gap size for fully-penetrated bead could be predicted by the gap model by Akhter et al. AIso, it was found that the joining efficiency was constant. Secondly, the butt welding of dissimilar materials (zinc coated steel plate and cold rolled steel plate) with different thicknesses was investigated. In the thickness range of 0.8-2.0 mm, the maximum welding speed of 10m/min was obtained. In the butt welding of two plates with thickness 2.0 mm and l.6mm, the maximum, welding speed of 6m/min was obtained, Finally. the forming results of butt-welded plates showed that the joining design was important to apply the laser welded blank in the automotive production.

  • In the modern days, a galvannealed sheet steel(GA) instead of a cold rolled steel sheet has been widely used as an alternative to extend the life of automotive body. Accordingly, the mechanical properties of GA for automobiles were taken Into account and studied by comparing with the temperature variation on annealing in this study. To clarify the effect of surface features in the mechanical properties of GA, the several tests such as nanoindentation and FE-analysis were executed. For this goal use is made of the method of neural networks. The developed neural networks apply also to obtain reliable mechanical properties of the thin films. Load-displacement curve was computed by the analysis procedure and compared with experimental results.

  • Based on a composition of 99.4 wt% AISI 316L stainless steel, 0.3wt% Ti and 0.3 wt% $Y_2O_3$, an austenitic ODS steel was fabricated by a process of mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and rolling. Fine oxide particles were observed in the matrix, and their chemical formulations were determined to be $Y_2Si_2O_7$ and TiO. Heat treatment of the cold-rolled sample at $1200^{\circ}C$ induced an isotropic tensile behavior at room temperature and at $700^{\circ}C$. This result would be mainly attributed to the equiaxed grains that form as a result of the heat treatment for recrystallization.
