Axenic purification and cultivation of an Arctic cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena KNUA005, with cold tolerance potential for sustainable production of algae-based biofuel

  • A psychrotolerant cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena KNUA005, was isolated from a cyanobacterial bloom sample collected near Dasan Station in Ny-${\AA}lesund$, Svalbard Islands during the Arctic summer season. To generate an axenic culture, the isolate was subjected to three purification steps: centrifugation, antibiotic treatment and streaking. The broad antibacterial spectrum of imipenem killed a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria, while the cyanobacterium was capable of enduring both antibiotics, the remaining contaminants that survived after treatment with imipenem were eliminated by the application of an aminoglycoside antibiotic, kanamycin. Physical separation by centrifugation and streaking techniques also aided axenic culture production. According to the cold-tolerance test, this mat-forming cyanobacterium was able to proliferate at low temperatures ranging between 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ which indicates the presence of cold-tolerance related genes in N. spumigena KNUA005. This suggests the possibility of incorporating cold-resistance genes into indigenous cyanobacterial strains for the consistent production of algae-based biofuel during the low-temperature seasons. Therefore, it is needed to determine the cold-tolerance mechanisms in the Arctic cyanobacterium in the next research stage.

상용차용 중공형 휠 너트 렌치의 냉간단조 공정 개발 (Development of Cold Forging Process of Hollow-type Wheel Nut Wrench for Commercial Vehicles)

  • A wheel nut wrench is one of the hand tools used to loosen and tighten lug nuts on automobile wheels and it has generally a solid-type geometry for commercial vehicles. However, the solid-type wheel nut wrenches manufactured by hot forging processes exhibit several drawbacks such as heavy weight and rough surface finish. Thus, many efforts have been devoted to change the part geometry and improve the manufacturing process. For this purpose, the weight of the final product can be reduced drastically using a hollow tube as the initial stock, which can be manufactured by the more economical manufacturing process of cold forging. In this study, the cold forging of a hollow-type wheel nut wrench for commercial vehicles was designed based on the results of fundamental experiments and CAE analyses using the commercial finite element code DEFORM-3D. In addition, cold forging experiments were conducted on a special-purpose forming machine for hollow wheel nut wrenches in order to validate the designed process sequence. As results, it was found that the final products with a weight reduction of 39% and better surface appearance can be manufactured without any defect with the newly designed cold forging process.

성형하중 감소를 위한 냉간단조금형 최적설계에 관한 연구 (A study on the cold forging die geometry optimal design for forging load reduction)

  • 본 연구에서는 냉간단조공정에서 성형하중과 금형내 응력집중 감소를 위해 자동차 엔진 밸브 스프링 리테이너 제품의 형상최적화를 위한 금형형상 최적설계를 수행하였다. 기존 생산에 사용되는 각 성형공정별 냉간단조 금형에 대한 유한요소해석 시뮬레이션을 통해 절단공정을 포함해 총 6공정으로 구성되어 있는 냉간단조공정 별 단조 프리폼의 성형 시에 발생하는 성형하중과 성형유동 특성을 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 금형 내 응력집중이 발생하는 주요 설계인자를 확인하였다. 상형금형과 하형금형부의 챔퍼(chamfer) 및 에지필렛(edge fillet) 형상을 대상으로 4인자 3수준 설계인자 및 변수 수준을 설정하고, 성형해석 시뮬레이션과 다구찌법을 활용하여 설계인자별 영향도를 분석하여 최적의 최적설계인자를 결정하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 최적설계변수를 적용하여 엔진밸브 스프링 리테이너의 최적설계 시뮬레이션 결과, 각 프리폼 성형공정별로 최대 36 %, 전체 공정 평균 20 %의 성형하중 감소 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 엔진의 고효율, 고출력, 고성능화 목표가 지속적으로 높아짐에 따라 고강도 소재의 활용이 많아지게 되어 이에 대응할 수 있는 성형공정 및 금형설계의 최적화가 필요하며, 향후 연구 결과를 활용하여 현업에 적용하여 제품단조성형성 개선 및 금형수명관리를 위한 기술자료로 활용하고자 한다.

HDPE 관의 TEE 성형에 대한 유한요소해석 (Finite Element Analysis of TEE Forming for HDPE Pipe)

  • 본 논문에서 HDPE 관의 일체형 TEE성형 공정은 강소성 유한요소 해석 프로그램인 DEFORM-3D를 이용하여 해석을 하였다. 이중 보온관에서 외관으로 사용되는 HDPE 관은 관을 통하여 흐르는 온수의 온도를 유지하기 위한 관으로, TEE는 주관에 가지관을 연결하여 열의 수송방향을 바꾸는 역할을 한다. TEE제작에 압출 용접(Extrusion Welding)을 사용하는 기존의 방법으로는 이음부에서 강도가 취약한 문제점이 발생하기 때문에 HDPE 관을 성형시켜 TEE 형태로 일체화시킨 후에 맞대기 용접(Butt Welding)을 하는 방식을 제안하였다. 열간과 냉간 성형 실험을 실시하였고, 초기 구멍 형태에 따른 모델 파라미터가 강소성 유한요소해석에 의해 규명되어 졌으며, 이는 실제의 제품 제조 공정에 적용되어 졌다.

  • We have studies on the Microstructures and densities as a function of forming pressures and the magnetic properties of the specimens with additive Bi$_2$O$_3$ that sintered at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 4.5 hours for synthesizing optimal Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite. Green density rose generally as Forming pressure increased from 1.7 ton/cm$^2$to 2.5 ton/cm$^2$and Cold Isostatic Pressure(CIP) method was more effective than Die Pressure(DP) method to high green density. Forming pressure had no influence on apparent density but on the other hand Bi$_2$O$_3$contents were strongly dominant to appaernt density than forming pressure. Bi$_2$O$_3$liquid phases created during sintering process promoted sintering and grain growth so that apparent density, grain size and permeability increased compared to that of the specimens which were sintered with non-additive Bi$_2$O$_3$.

  • Conventional automatic transmission system includes a hydrodynamic torque converter to transfer engine torque from an engine crank shaft to a rotatable input members, which are of complex design permitting them to serve several functions. These are clutches or brakes which couple the rotatable input member to member of a planetary gear set. The annulus gear for an automatic transmission is a monolithic gear having a set of gear teeth formed on an inner surface which is coupling with a set of planetary gear. In this study, the flow forming method is applied to the manufacturing of the annulus gear. This cold forming is proper method in order to manufacture dimensionally precise and round hollow components such as annulus gear. By pre-calculated amount of wall thickness reduction, the seamless tube of SAE1026 is compressed above its yield strength, plastically deformed and made to flow in several roll passes. According to this study, the desired geometry of the annulus gear can be achieved when the outer diameter and the thickness of the tube are properly decreased by compressed roll passes and the available material volume is easily forced to flow longitudinally over the shape of mandrel.

  • A new forming technology has been developed to fabricate near-net shape products using light metal. A semi-solid forming technology has some advantages compared with the conventional forming processes such as die casting squeeze casting and hot/cold forging. In this study the numerical analysis of semi-solid filling for a straight die shape and orifice die shape in gate pattern is studied on semi-solid materials(SSM) of solid fraction fs =30% in A356 aluminum alloy. The finite difference program of Navier-Stokes equation coupled with heat transfer and solidification has been developed to predict a filling pattern and the temperature distribution of SSM. The programdeveloped in this study gives die filling patterns of SSM and final solidifica-tion region.

  • Interface friction in blanking dies, cold forging and extrusion of aluminum alloys is a major cause of inefficient process. This paper describes an investigation of femtosecond laser texturing for reduction of interface friction on sliding surfaces in forming process. Femtosecond direct writing technology was used to fabricate a laser micro-machined die and to create microgroove patterns with varying size and density on metal forming dies. A systematic approach to find the optimum parameters and computer simulation comparison of friction coefficients are provided to study the relation of friction coefficients and die profiles. In metal forming tests, the effectiveness of various laser-machined patterns for enhancing interface lubrication is determined.

엔진 벨브 스프링 컵 단조의 유한요소해석 (Finite element analysis of forging for spring cup of engine valve)

  • Forging for spring cup of engine valve was investigated in this study. New method is needed to reduce cost and development lead time required to fix forming process of new product, that eventually can provide die, metal flow and forming loads with high confidence level. FEM could provide required detail information that could reduce trial error in advance before the actual production. By using the rigid-plastic finite element simulation, possibilities of improving former research were explored. Results generated by FEM could foresee expected material deformation in advance and made possible new forming process successfully.

  • A semi-solid forming technology has some advantages compared with conventional forming processes such as die casting, squeeze casting and hot/cold forging. In this study, the numerical analysis of semi-solid filling has been studied with solid fraction fs = 30% of A356 aluminum alloys. The finite difference program of two-phase flow model of Navier Stokes' equation coupled with heat transfer and solidification has been developed to predict a filling pattern, liquid segregation and temperature distribution of semi-solid metals. It gives die filling patterns and final solidification area. It can predict mechanical properties of semi-solid forming processes.
