This study was carried out to establish an efficient selection condition for cold-tolerant individuals among evergreen Quercus spp. To select higher cold-tolerant individuals among four species of evergreen Quercus spp. (Q. acuta, Q. glauca, Q. myrsinaefoila, and Q. salicina), an-year-old seedlings of each species were exposed to low temperature in serial, and then examined for the death of cell tissue and the surface temperature was monitored. It was shown that the higher numbers of seedlings of Q. myrsinaefolia were survived than the others when those seedlings are exposed to cold stress. Thus, selection of the cold tolerant individuals was conducted on Q. myrsinaefolia seedlings. The limit low temperature condition for selecting cold-tolerant individuals was -6℃ for 24 hrs because no seedling of Q. myrsinaefolia was survived after exposed to -7℃ for 24 hours. It was shown that the leaf surface temperature of the selected individuals was higher than those of the non-selected individuals when they were exposed to cold-stress while monitoring them using thermal graphic camera. The results in this study can be used for expanding afforestation area of tree species of the warm temperate zone for preparation of climate change.
In Jeju, on January 23, 2016, a cold surge accompanied by heavy snowfall with the most significant amount of 12 cm was the highest record in 32 years. During this period, the temperature of 850 hPa in January was the lowest in 2016. Notably, in 2016, the average surface temperature of January on the Polar cap was the highest since 1991, and 500 hPa geopotential height also showed the highest value. With this condition, the polar vortex in the northern hemisphere meandered and expanded into the subtropics regionally, covering the Korean Peninsula with very high potential vorticity up to 7 Potential Vorticity Unit. As a result, the strong cold advection, mostly driven by a northerly wind, around the Korean Peninsula occurred at over 2𝜎. Previous studies have not addressed this extreme synoptic condition linked to polar vortex expansion due to the unprecedented Arctic warming. We suggest that the occurrence of a strong Ural blocking event after the abrupt warming of the Barents/Karas seas is a major cause of unusually strong cold advection. With a specified mesoscale model simulation with SST (Sea Surface Temperature), we also show that the warmer SST condition near the Korean Peninsula contributed to the heavy snowfall event on Jeju Island.

In industrially advanced countries, environmentally conscious machining was eagerly studied because of ecological and economical reasons. As the environmental regulations become stricter, the new machining technologies which take environmental aspects into consideration are being developed. Recently the research institutions have established application method for dry, semi-dry, oil-mist and compressed cold air machining. In this paper the performance of new compressed cold air system for environmentally conscious machining is investigated and machinability of dry and new compressed cold air machining is evaluated. A series of tests are carried out by using measuring equipments in condition of dry and compressed cold air machining.

In cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections, web openings are becoming increasingly popular. Such openings, however, result in the sections becoming more susceptible to web crippling, especially under concentrated loads applied near the web opening. This paper presents the results of a finite element parametric study into the effect of circular web openings on the web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections for the interior-one-flange (IOF) loading condition. This involves a bearing load applied to the top flange of a length of member, away from the end supports. The cases of web openings located centred beneath the bearing load (i.e. beneath the bearing plate delivering the load) and offset to the bearing plate, are considered. Three grades of stainless steel are considered: duplex EN1.4462, austenitic EN1.4404 and ferretic EN1.4003. In total, 2218 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, strength reduction factors for load bearing capacity are determined, where these reduction factors are applied to the bearing capacity calculated for a web without openings, to take account the influence of the web openings. The strength reduction factors are first compared to equations recently proposed for cold-formed carbon steel lipped channel-sections. It is shown that for the case of the duplex grade, the strength reduction factor equations for cold-formed carbon steel are conservative but only by 2%. However, for the cases of the austentic and ferritic grades, the cold-formed carbon steel equations are around 9% conservative. New strength reduction factor equations are proposed for all three stainless steel grades.

In cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections, use of web openings for service purposes are becoming increasingly popular. Web openings, however, result in the sections becoming more susceptible to web crippling. This paper presents a finite element investigation into the web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections with circular web openings under the interior-two-flange (ITF) loading condition. The cases of web openings located centred and offset to the bearing plates are considered in this study. In order to take into account the influence of the circular web openings, a parametric study involving 2,220 finite element analyses was performed, covering duplex EN1.4462, austenitic EN1.4404 and ferritic EN1.4003 stainless steel grades. From the results of the parametric study, strength reduction factor equations are proposed. The strengths obtained from reduction factor equations are first compared to the strengths calculated from the equations recently proposed for cold-formed carbon steel lipped channel-sections. It is demonstrated that the strength reduction factor equations proposed for cold-formed carbon steel are unconservative for the stainless steel grades by up to 17%. New coefficients for web crippling strength reduction factor equations are then proposed that can be applied to all three stainless steel grades.
The startup behaviour of PEM fuel cells at subfreeze zero is one of the most challenging tasks to be solved before PEM fuel cell vehicle is commercialized. Automotive companies are trying to increase cold statup capability of fuel cell. In this study, we found out the design factor of the stack to increase cold startup capability using 4kW stack and then cold startup test was performed at the various shutdown condition and the various current. In order to test the cold startup possibility and capability in vehicle, we installed 80kW stack in the vehicle and this 80kW fuel cell vehicle was housed in an environmental chamber to investigate the characteristics of cold startup and driving. We found that it is possible for fuel cell vehicle with 80kW stack to self-heated cold startup and drive at $-15^{\circ}C$.
RC (Reinforced Concrete) members are always subjected to loading conditions and have construction joints when constructed on a big scale. Service life for RC structure exposed to chloride attack is usually estimated through chloride diffusion test in sound concrete, however the test is performed without consideration of effect of loading and joint. In the present work, chloride diffusion coefficient is measured in concrete cured for 1 year. In order to evaluate the effect of applied load, cold joint, and mineral admixtures, OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and 40%-replaced GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete are prepared. The diffusion test is performed under loading conditions for concrete containing cold joint. Investigating the previous test results for 91 days-cured condition and the present work, changing diffusion coefficients with applied stress are normalized considering material type and cold joint. For evaluation of service life in RC continuous beam with 2 spans, non-linear analytical model is adopted, and service life in each location is evaluated considering the effects of applied stress, cold joint, and GGBFS. From the work, varying service life is simulated under various loading conditions, and the reduced results due to cold joint and tensile zone are quantitatively evaluated. The effect of various conditions on diffusion can provide more quantitative evaluation of chloride behavior and the related service life.
The nano-particles are known to influence the environmental protection and human health. The relationships between transient vehicle operation and nano-particle emissions are not well-known, especially for diesel passenger vehicles with DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter). In this study, two diesel passenger vehicles were measured on a chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matter (PM) emission of these vehicles was investigated by number and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was evaluated using the standard gravimetric measurement method, and the total number concentrations were measured on a ECE15+EUDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). According to the investigation results, total number concentration was $1.14{\times}10^{11}$M and mass concentration was 0.71mg/km. About 99% of total number concentration was emitted during the $0{\sim}400s$ because of engine cold condition. In high temperature and high speed duration, the particulate matter was increased but particle concentration was emitted not yet except initial engine cold condition According to DPF performance deterioration, the particulate matter was emitted 2 times and particle concentration was emitted 32 times. Thus DPF performance deterioration affects particle concentration more than PM.
The mechanical property related to lap shear strength of the joint structure between carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite and metal (Ni-Cr Alloy) under varying environmental conditions (temperature and humidity) was studied in order to apply to the aircraft fan blade. Room temperature dry (RTD), elevated temperature wet (ETW), and cold temperature dry (CTD) environmental conditions were chosen for investigation based on the flight conditions of aircraft. Lap shear strength tests were conducted according to ASTM Standard D3528 to evaluate the shear strength. The microstructure characteristic of failure zone was analyzed by SEM images to check the adhesive shear strength with the three environmental conditions. In comparison with shear strength for the RTD condition, the shear strength in the ETW condition was reduced by 72.8% while those for the CTD condition increased by 56.5%. The moisture absorption and high temperature in ETW condition strongly had an affect on mechanical property of adhesive, while cold temperature could enhance the adhesive shear strength due to the higher brittleness.

At 21st century, material development concepts were changed to fulfill the environmental friendly demands. This study is to study the effect of pressurized nitrogen gas and manganese in high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel(HNS) in which N and Mn elements substitute the nickel element. 100kg HNS ingots were made by Pressurized Vacuum Induction Melting(P-VIM) and were forged according to free forging process. As forged HNS were hot and cold rolled by pilot scale rolling machine. Depending on the rolling condition, the mechanical properties of HNS were changed. The roll thrust and sheet folding showed asymmetry condition between work and drive side during cold and hot rolling. The purpose of this study are to improve workability the hot and cold rolling machine and to set the conditions for establishing the rolling process.
