  • The process of energy separation in a low pressure vortex tube with air as a working medium is studied In detail. Experimental data of the temperature of the cold and hot air leaving the vortex tube are presented. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the inner surface of the vortex tube and the temperature distribution in the vortex tube provides useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube. In this study Outer tube is used for the application of Diesel engine exhaust. The hot gas flow is fumed 180° and passes the outside of the vortex tube a second time heating it. From this geometric setup of a vortex tube the effects of energy separation and the prediction of the ignition of Diesel Soot is presented by experimental data.

  • APU for aircraft is operated under severe condition as high altitude and low temperature, and demand high reliability in flight. This study is to be verified of the ignition and the combustion stability of APU under the harsh conditions. The basic data obtained in combustion rig test were directly applied to the altitude test with a engine. That start logic was obtained in ground development test. The results of altitude test show that air swirl injector has good operation and ignition performance at 20kft, hot/cold($-40^{\circ}C$) day.

  • An entrained flow gasifier simulating the cold mode was tested to estimate its performance for coal gasification and flow characteristics with a developed high speed impinging jet nozzle. The burner was designed for high temperature and high pressure(HTHP) conditions, especially for IGCC(Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle). In order to get proper size of droplets for high viscous liquid such as coal slurry, atomization was achieved by impacting slurry with high speed (over 150m/sec) secondary gas (oxygen/or air)/ Formed water droplets were ranged between 100.mu.m to 20.mu.m in their sizes. The flow characteristics in the gasifier was well understood in mixing between fuel and oxidizer. Both external and internal recirculation zones were closely investigated through experimentation with visualization and numerical solutions from FLUENT CODE.

  • The spray-induced mixing characteristics and thermal decomposition of aqueous urea solution into ammonia have been studied to design optimum sizes and geometries of the mixing chamber in SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The cold flow tests about the urea-injection nozzle were performed to clarify the parameters of spray mixing characteristics such as mean diameter and velocity of drops and spray width determined from the interactions between incoming air and injected drops. Discrete particle model in Fluent code was adopted to simulate spray-induced mixing process and the experimental results on the spray characteristics were used as input data of numerical calculations. The simulation results on the spray-induced mixing were verified by comparing the spray width extracted from the digital images with the simulated Particle tracks of injected drops. The single kinetic model was adopted to predict thermal decomposition of urea solution into ammonia and solved simultaneously along with the verified spray model. The hot air generator was designed to match the flow rate and temperature of the exhaust gas of the real engines The measured ammonia productions in the hot air generator were compared with the numerical predictions and the comparison results showed good agreements. Finally, we concluded that the design capabilities for sizing optimum mixing chamber were established.

  • When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.

  • The effect of applied electric fields on jet flow instability was investigated experimentally by varying the direct current (DC) voltage and the alternating current (AC) frequency and voltage applied to a jet nozzle. We aimed to elucidate the origin of the occurrence of twin-lifted jet flames in laminar jet flow configuration, which occur when AC electric fields are applied. The results indicate that a twin-lifted jet flames originates from cold jet instability, caused by interactions between negative ions in the jet flow via electron attachment as $O_2+e{\rightarrow}O_2{^-}$ when AC electric fields are applied. This was confirmed by experiments in which a variety of gaseous jets were ejected from a nozzle to which DC voltages and AC frequencies and voltages were applied, with ambient air between two deflection plates connected to a DC power source. Experiments in which jet flows of several gases were ejected from a nozzle and AC electric fields were applied in coflow-nitrogen provided further evidence. The flow instability occurred only for oxygen and air jets. Additionally, jet instability occurred when the applied frequency was less than 80 Hz, corresponding to the characteristic collision response time. The effect of AC electric fields on the overall structure of the jet flows is also reported. Based on these results, we propose a mechanism to reduce jet flow instability when AC electric fields are applied to the nozzle.

  • The outside environment is very severe while aircraft is cruising. Especially small particle of icing in cold air condition can have negative influence on aircraft performance. If ice particle is attached to leading edge of wing, it can change wing configuration and decrease flight quality. If icing particle is attached to inlet of engine, it can damage compressor blade and have negative influence to aircraft safety. We make icing simulation device with liquid air system for analyzing about variation of engine performance due to incoming of icing to engine.

  • This study was conducted on a high-temperature/high-pressure washer in which low-pressure cold water in a boiler is heated to a temperature range of $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ by supplying diesel combustion heat. The high-temperature water is sent to a compressor to increase its pressure to 200 bar, thereby making high-temperature/high-pressure water, which is sprayed through a spray nozzle. In the results of this study, the spray temperature of the high-pressure washing was shown to be the highest when the ratio between the actual amount of combustible air and the theoretical amount of air was 1:1 and the energy consumption rate of the low-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer was shown to be much lower than that of the high-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer.

  • Recently, waste water treatment system is developed in small and middle size to get more economic advantage. Freeze concentration system has high thermodynamic efficiency and low energy consumption, can re-use purified water and cold energy obtained from ice. This study was experimentally performed to investigate pollution containment in frozen layer by cooling wall temperature, air-bubble flow methods, initial ice-lining thickness of frozen layer in NaCl aqueous solution and the representative heavy metals, Pb and Cr aqueous solution. As the result, a decrease in the cooling wall temperature bring a higher growth rate of ice front and the more solute was involved in frozen layer. The method to inject directly air-bubble into ice-liquid interface through ring shape nozzle gave high purity of ice compared to indirect method. Ice lining in 5mm thickness resulted in frozen layer with higher purity than 1mm thickness.
