Varietal Classification by Multivariate Analysis in Job′s Tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. mayuen STAPF) (다변량 해석법에 의한 율무의 품종군 분류)

  • Sixty two Job's Tear cultivars were largely classified into ten varietal groups and every varieties. except for Group V forming the Group by one variety. uniformly formed the Groups. From Group I to Group Ⅹ respectively contained three(5%), eighteen(29%), five(8%), thirteen(21%), one(2%), five(8%), seven(11%), four(7%), two(3%) and four(7%) varieties. Group II and Group IV showed considerably large variation whereas Group Ⅷ, IV and Ⅹ showed low variation and inferiority in vigorosity and yield components. Most of the varietal Group were not associated with their geographical origin. Days to flowering and plant height among the nine characters were the largest contributors to the D$^2$ in both inter- and inter groups.

Antioxidant Activities and α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Effect of Water Extracts from Medicinal Plants (약용식물 물 추출물의 항산화 활성 및 α-Glucosidase 저해효과)

  • We studied the total polyphenol content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition of water extracts from 17 medicinal plants. Total polyphenol contents ranged from 10.0 (Coix lachryma-jobi L, CL) ~ 279.7 (Perilla sikokiana, PS)mg/g. The water extract from medicinal plants were evaluated for its free radical scavenging activities and compared with a commercial antioxidant, ascorbic acid. DPPH radical scavenging activity of Pyrus pyrifolia (PP), Chamaecyparis obtusa L. (COL), Chamaecyparis obtusa F. (COF), and PS were higher than positive control. Higher hydroxyl radical scavenging activity were shown in Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) and Cordyceps militaris (CM) than the other plants. The highest anti-${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity was observed in Cornus officinalis (CO) and Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews (PSA) water extracts. PSA showed not only the higher DPPH radical scavenging activity but also the anti-${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity. The results of our study that PP, COL, COF, PS, AS, CM, CO and PSA could be potential candidates for natural antioxidants.

  • We are concerned about how to apply the theories of oriental medicine appropriately, which direction should it be taken, and how it should be developed. And it is believed to be essential for the government to make efforts to set a standard and laws to validate the medicinal effects and process of the assessment so that the systematic development can be encouraged, and to prepare guidance for the food development for national health improvement Ihis study was peformed to provide basic data that predict the usefulness of oriental medicinal herbs to remove the dampness through diuresis for excess syndrome obesity with oriental diet therapy cuisine(Yak-Sun). Five oriental medicininal herbs, Coix lachryma-jobi L, Atractylodes lancea DC., Ligusticum wallichii F., Angelica sinensis D., Zingiber officinale R. were collected and made into mixing extracts(OMCE). And we examined the effects of OMCE on body weight serum glucose, insulin and lipid profile improvement in rats fed high fat diets. Sprague-Dawley rae(230-250 g) were randomly divided into five groups : basal diet(normal diet control group, NCG), only high fat diet(High fat control group, HCG), high fat diet and supplemented with 25mg/100g body weight 50mg/100g body weight 75mg/100g body weight by OMCE(HLG, HMG, HHG). These experimental diets were fed for 6 weeks. The OME fed groups decreased more significantly in weight serum glucose insulin and lipids than the high fat control group did. These results imply that the OMCE can be used as a safe and clinically applicable ingredients for diet called Yaksun of excess syndrome obesity in human.

Effect of Insulin-like Action and Insulin Sensitizing on 3T3-Ll Adipocytes from Coicis Semen (의이인이 3T3-Ll Adipocytes에서 인슐린성 작용과 인슐린 민감성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : In this study, water extracts from Coix lachryma-jobi Linne var. mayuen Stapf. were investigated for their effects on insulin-like action and glucose uptake in 3T3-Ll cells. Methods : We examined the effects of insulin-like action on the differentiation of 3T3-Ll fibroblasts. The Coicis Semen was treated with hot water and the extract was freeze-dried. The hot water extract was chromatographed on nonionic polymer resin (Amberlite XAD-4, Sigma) with distilled water (Fr. 1), 20% (Fr. 2), 40% (Fr. 3), 60% (Fr. 4), 80% (Fr. 5), and 100% EtOH (Fr. 6), successively. Results : Total extract of Coicis Semen was fractionated into 0 to 100% MeOH with Amberlite XDA-4 column. Treatment of cells with $10{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ of total extracts of Coicis Semen significantly increased the differentiation (p<0.05). At $1{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ level of insulin, the differentiation was accelerated (p<0.01). The effect of extracts plus insulin on the differentiation was greater than that of insulin alone. In 3T3-Ll adipocytes, glucose uptake was higher by 2.7 times with 5 uM of total extract in low dosage of insulin (3 ng/ml) than without total extract. 5 and 50 uM of water and 40% MeOH fractions increased glucose uptake by 3.5 times in 3T3-Ll adipocytes (p<0.00l). Conclusions : Coicis Semen contains compounds which playa role of insulin-like action and insulin sensitizer.

  • To find out the optimum fertilizer levcl for Job's Tears, Seungju local cultivar, experiment with six fertilizer levels was conducted on the experimental field of forage crop in Sunchon National University from Apr. 1989 to Aug. 1990. The results obtained were summarized as follows: I .Raising nitrogen(N) application rate up to 13.5 kg/lOa increased dry matter yield linearly. However, at high N application rate, 18 kg/lOa, plants were too leafy and parts of leaves and lodging were decreased. so that dry matter yield was decreased.2. The optimum application rate of fertilizers turned out to be 13.5-6-6 kg/lOa of $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$. Content of crude protein, yield of fresh and dry matter were the highest and that of crude fiber such as NDF. ADF and cellulose were the lowest at this rate.

  • In order to determine the optimum planting density of Job's Tear, We investigatedagronomic characters, yield components and yields by using Ewon and Heuksuk cultivar. The characters, plant height, stem diameter, number of stems per $m^2$ and number of leaves per $m^2$, etc., were excellent in $60{\times}15cm$ planting space for the Ewon and Heuksuk local cultivar. Both the weight of 100 grains and that of 1 liter also higher for the Ewon local cultivar, and yield of stem and seed were the most excellent in $60{\times}15cm$ planting space for the Ewon and Heuksuk local cultivar. For the Ewon and Heuksuk, the analysis of variance for agronomic characters following the difference of planting density were acknowledged to be worth of attention.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield by sowing times and spacing using machine seeder on Coix Lachryma-jobi L. var ma-yuen $S_{TAPF}$. Adlay was seeded at four different dates (April 20, May 5, May 20 and June 5). Planting spaces were controlled by the seed roller of tractor drill seeder attached to tractor at three spacing ($60{\times}15cm,\;70{\times}15cm\;and\;80{\times}15cm$). The results were summarized as follows. Required days to emergence and days to anthesis were shortened as sowing date was late. But days to maturity were prolonged when sowing date was late. The accumulated temperature increased such as required periods increased. In growth characteristics, culm length was significantly different at different sowing times. But all growth characteristics was not affected by different spacings. In yield components, 1,000 grain weight and ripening rate were significantly different at different sowing times, also the number of tillers and branches was significantly affected at different spacings. Grain yield/ha was significantly different at different sowing times. But it was not significantly different at different spacings. Thus, in order to improve the yield of adlay using drill seeder, if it is not frost, sowing should be done as early as possible. As a result, suitable sowing time was April 20 with spacing at $60{\times}15cm$ using machine seeder in Korea.

  • A study was undertaken to examine the effect of the addition of job's tears(Coixlachryma-jobi L.) chungkukjang(soybeanfermented food) and wheat bran powder on quality attributes of pound cakes. Job's tears chungkukjang and wheat bran powder was added to the batter at a ratio of 10, 12.5 and 15% respectively. The antioxidant activity was estimated by DPPH free radical scavening activity, the total phenolic compounds content and flavonoid content in job's tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder and pounds cakes. Antioxidative activity was highly correlated with the total phenolic and total flavonoids contents of job's tears chungkukjang and wheat bran pound cakes respectively(r=0.9671, r=0.8335). The quality characteristics of job's tears chungkukjang powder and wheat bran powder pound cakes were estimated in terms of the specific load volume, hardness, hunter value of crumb and crust and sensory quality of cakes. Variations of Agronomic Characteristics of Collected Coix lachryma-jobi Species (국내 율무 수집종의 특성변이)

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate on agronomic traits of Korean local adlay (Coix lachryma L.) germplasm, 281 cultivars (lines). The largest collected cultivars was from Kyungsangbukdo (56 cultivars), and the next was in the order of Cheonlabukdo (48 cultivars), Kyungsangnamdo (44 cultivars), Kyunggido (39 cultivars) Chungcheongnamdo (23 cultivars), Kangwondo (23 cultivars), Cheonlanamdo (17 cultivars), and Chungcheongbukdo (16 cultivars) in distribution of collected region for 281 cultivars. In the growth stages, days to emergence from seeding were required $16.4{\pm}2.03$ days, days to heading from emergence was required $73.6{\pm}5.87$ days, days to ripening from heading was required $52.3{\pm}4.91$ days and cultivation period was required $142.5{\pm}5.87$ days. Culm length was $210.3{\pm}16.39$ cm, no. of tiller per plant was $10.4{\pm}2.13$, culm diameter was $11.7{\pm}1.09$ mm, fruiting position was $4.6{\pm}0.82$ node, no. of main culm node was $11.1{\pm}0.78$, degree of lodging was $5.3{\pm}3.42$ and severity of leaf blight was $56.1{\pm}0.78$ in the growth characteristics of the germplasm. In the yield of component, no. of grains per $m^2$ was $5,938{\pm}2,152$, percentage of ripening was $67.7{\pm}33.12$, 1,000 grains weight was $123.8{\pm}33.76$ g and grain weight was $473.0{\pm}207.90$ g. Grain weight was correlates significantly positively with no. of main culm node, percentage of ripening and no. of grains per $m^2$ among agronomic traits. Correlation coefficient between grain weight and 1,000 grain weight was positive, while grain weight and severity of leaf blight was significantly negative. Correlation coefficient between grain weight and days to ripening from heading was significant negatively.

New Variety 'Sanggang' of Coix lachryma-jobi L. with Early Maturity and Resistance to Leaf Blight (율무 조숙 내병 다수성 신품종 '상강')

  • 'Sanggang' was a new adlay cultivar which was developed from the three way crosses of $(Hukuhane\;{\times}\;Suwon-6)\;{\times}$ Suwon-6 at the Northern Agricultural Research Station, Gyunggido ARES. This cultivar had green sheaf, dark-green leaf, green culm, milky white silk and darkbrown seedcoat. Sanggang shortened 10 days of heading date and 12 days of ripening time compared with Yulmoo 1. In the yield's conponent of Sanggang, the number of grains was by 56 grains less but ripening rate and 1,000 grain weight were higher by 6.5% and 20.1 g compared with Yulmoo 1, respectively. This cultivar showed moderate resistance to leaf blight. The yield of Sanggang was about 313 kg/10a of unpolished grain at ordinary cultivation. This cutivar showed about 17% and 27% higher yield in Yonchon Gyeonggi province and Cheongju Chungbuk province compared with the check variety respectively. This cultivar was adaptable to mono cropping in central and northern region of Korea.
