  • In order to diagnose and prevent Alzheimer's Disease (AD), it is becoming increasingly important to develop a CAD(Computer-aided Diagnosis) system for AD diagnosis, which provides effective treatment for patients by analyzing 3D MRI images. It is essential to apply powerful deep learning algorithms in order to automatically classify stages of Alzheimer's Disease and to develop a Alzheimer's Disease support diagnosis system that has the function of detecting hippocampus and CSF(Cerebrospinal fluid) which are important biomarkers in diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease. In this paper, for AD diagnosis, we classify a given MRI data into three categories of AD, mild cognitive impairment, and normal control according by applying 3D brain MRI image to the Faster R-CNN model and detect hippocampus and CSF in MRI image. To do this, we use the 2D MRI slice images extracted from the 3D MRI data of the Faster R-CNN, and perform the widely used majority voting algorithm on the resulting bounding box labels for classification. To verify the proposed method, we used the public ADNI data set, which is the standard brain MRI database. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves impressive classification performance compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

  • Dementia among the diseases occurring in the old age is recognized as a disease to be solved at the national level and systematic management is being carried out. However, the awareness and response of the mild cognitive disorder, which is the middle stage of normal aging and dementia, are insufficient and social costs are increasing every year. The subjects of the study were 303 hospitalized patients whose primary diagnosis was mild cognitive impairment (F067) in a nursing hospital located in one district in 2016. The number of days of hospitalization was shorter in autumn and longer in winter or in hospital discharge. The cost of treatment for patients with mild cognitive impairment is lower in autumn and higher in winter or in 'discharge' of medical treatment results. The total cost of medical treatment was high in the winter by season in the ADL 6-12 and ADL 13-20 groups. Difference in the cost of medical treatment according to the characteristics of medical treatment, the medical expenses were the highest when the number of corporal disease was 5 ~ 8. In the medical treatment results, the ADL 6-12 point group and the ADL 13-20 point group had high medical expenses in 'continue'. Considering the clinical characteristics of mild cognitive impairment and considering that 10-15% of the patients with mild cognitive impairment progress to dementia every year, early detection and treatment of mild cognitive impairment is an effective and potentially important task for reducing potential social and dementia patients.

  • This research purports to find out the characteristics of Korean students cognitive attributes and compare it with that of high-achieving countries who took TIMSS 2011 based on the Cognitive Diagnostic Theory. Based on TIMSS 2011 Science framework, nine cognitive attributes were extracted and the researcher analyzed that 216 of the TIMSS 2011 science items require these attributes. This analysis was conducted to come up with a Q-matrix. After producing the Q-matrix, multi-level IRT was used to figure out each countries' characteristics for each of the cognitive attribute. According to the study results, four attributes, such as 'Use Models,' 'Interpret Information,' 'Draw Conclusions,' and 'Evaluate and justify' were easier attributes for Korean middle school students. However, the other five attributes such as 'Recall/Recognize', 'Explain', 'Classify', 'Integrate', 'Hypothesize and Design' were considered as harder attributes compared to other countries. Korean students also considered 'Interpret Information' as the easiest attributes, and 'Explain' as the hardest attributes of all. For Korean students, those attributes considered to be easy were the easiest and hard attributes as the hardest compared to other countries, showing very extreme cases. Therefore, to give students more meaningful learning experience, it is better to use all the attributes altogether rather than use specific attributes while constructing Science curriculum or textbooks.

  • This paper has developed a system for early diagnosis of senile dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by developing software to measure the volume of hippocampus. This software consists of two parts; segmentation and analysis. The segmentation part uses ROI and region growing to segment hippocampus region. On the other hand, the analysis part creates a volume rendering of hippocampus. This software is expected contribute in these research fields for dementia diagnosis and its medication planning.

  • The purpose of this paper is to make a design and implementation of a diagnosis system of learning misconception of students who learn 'be' verb in the English language by using fuzzy theory. In this system, a fuzzy cognitive map exposes the fact that students' perception and misunderstanding about 'the English' language have an intertwined relationship, and diagnoses causes of misconceptions of students by using fuzzy memory associative memory. It suggests that since most existing systems of rule based expert system have had several limitations, this system will be applied to diagnose learners' misconception of learning in varieties of education areas.

  • We report a case of 70-year-old man with glioblastoma presenting as acute encephalitic illness. The patient exhibited sudden onset of cognitive impairment and headache for 2 days. Initial brain MRI showed left temporal lobe hyperintensity, and cerebrospinal fluid cytology revealed a mild pleocytosis. The patient had initially improved after medical treatment with a presumptive diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). After 8 months, the patient complained of recurrent seizures. A follow-up brain MRI revealed marked increases in size and surrounding perilesional edema in the left temporal lesion on T2-weighted images and a new contrast-enhancing lesion on gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images. Stereotactic brain biopsy revealed a glioblastoma. The atypical encephalitic presentation of glioblastoma should be considered if definitive evidence for the diagnosis of HSE cannot be obtained.

  • PCA(Principle Component Analysis) has emerged as a useful tool for process monitoring and fault diagnosis. The general approach requires the user to identify the root cause by interpreting the residual or principle components. This could be tedious and often impossible for a large process. In this paper, PCA scheme is combined with the FCM-based fault diagnostic algorithm to enhance the diagnostic results. The implementation of the FCM-based fault diagnostic system by using PCA is done and its application is illustrated on the two-tank system.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for the fault diagnosis using simple FCM(Fuzzy Cognitive Map) is proposed FCMs which store uncertain causal knowledges are fuzzy signed graphs with feedback. The algorithm allows searching the origin of fault and the ways of propagating the abnormality throughout the process simply and has following characteristics. First, it can distinguish the cause of soft failure which can degenerate the process as well as hard failure. Second, it is proper for the processes which have difficulties to establish the exact quantative model. Finally, it has short amputation time in comparison with the fault tree or the other AI methods. The applicability of the proposed algorithm for the fault diagonosis to a tank or pipeline system is demonstrated

  • Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of musculoskeletal disorders that encompass symptoms caused by abnormalities of the craniofacial structures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), muscles involved in the masticatory system, and other related tissues or structures. Although TMDs can occur at any age, research on the prevalence, epidemiology, and treatment strategies of TMDs has been conducted in all age groups, but primarily in adults. Unlike adults, children and adolescents are in a period of cognitive and physical development. Because of this growth potential, children respond better to TMD treatment than adults do. However, clinicians must remember that chronic pain and growth abnormalities can occur if the patient's symptoms and signs are not accurately diagnosed and treated. This article reviews the growth and development of the craniofacial region, including the TMJ, and discusses considerations when diagnosing and treating TMDs in children and adolescents.
