  • Recent research has shown that university students experience severe stress and depleted directed attention due to study, social relationships, and economic dependency. Based on the stress reduction theory and the attention restoration theory, this study aims to investigate the effects of natural landscape on university students' stress and cognitive performance through a wide array of measurements including GSR(galvanic skin responsse), IBI(interbeat interval), ZIPERS(Zucherman Inventory of Personal Reactions), and mental arithmetic test. The restorative effects of natural landscape were compared with those of urban landscape. 128 university students participated in the study, and the data of 120 students was analyzed. The results showed that natural landscape was more restorative in relieving psychological stress and in enhancing cognitive performance than urban landscape, which evidenced the restorative effects of natural landscape. Therefore, it could be proposed that natural landscaping of the university campus contributes to students' stress reduction and cognitive enhancement. But such effects were not found in the two physiological measures(both GSR and IBI). Moreover, it was analyzed that urban landscape had a more beneficial effect than natural landscape for IBI, which might resulted from the participants' characteristics and the study landscape. Specifically, the young age span of the participants(average 23.8 years old) and the very natural setting of the university where they were enrolled might lead to the conflicting results in physiological measures. Also, the urban landscape used in the study had a sense of "scope", which is one of the Kaplan and Kaplan's restorative characteristics. Based on this opinion, it was suggested that future study should investigate the impact of the landscape type and contents as well as the participants' characteristics on the restorative effects of natural landscape.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the cognition of speculative aesthetics in the architectural space. Architectural space as the subject of the aesthetical study has been ignored such a long period though it should be centered of the whole architectural theory. Even it has not been dealt with independently but just only as a part of aesthetic or artistic field. Also it is also true that academic approach to the architectural space as per the aesthetic recognition has not been done so satisfactorily. The transcendental subjectivity as the aesthetic cognitive viewpoint of the architectural space means speculative aesthetics and the understands the essential meaning of the function and composition The conclusions of this study are as follows : The formalistic cognitive concepts including organic functional space between the whole and the part and anti-cubic synchronous space are included in the architecture of the speculative cognition, and finally the contextual cognitive concepts including the restoring analogical space of the in-depth constituent factors and associated centripetal spaces.

  • ROS is based on a graph architecture where processing takes place in nodes. Nodes communicate together by passing messages through topics based on the publish/subscribe model. On the other hand, OPRoS components know each other and are tightly-coupled via port connections, and different coupling schemes make the interoperation between two platforms difficult. This paper describes an extension of OPRoS framework to support the interoperation with the ROS topic.

  • This paper presents an analytical framework for dynamic spectrum allocation in cognitive radio networks. We propose a distributed queuing based Markovian model each for single channel and multiple channels access for a contending user. Knowledge about spectrum mobility is one of the most challenging problems in both these setups. To solve this, we consider probabilistic channel availability in case of licensed channel detection for single channel allocation, while variable data rates are considered using channel aggregation technique in the multiple channel access model. These models are designed for a centralized architecture to enable dynamic spectrum allocation and are compared on the basis of access latency and service duration.

  • Many intelligent agent systems are known to incorporate BDI architecture for cognitive reasoning. Since this architecture contains all the knowledge of world model and reasoning rule, it is very complex and difficult to handle. This paper describes a methodology to design and implement BDI architecture, BDIAXml based on XML for multi-agent systems. This XML-based BDI architecture is smaller than any other BDI architecture because it separates knowledge for reasoning from domain knowledge and enables knowledge sharing using XML technology. Knowledge for BDI mental state and reasoning is composed of specific XML files and these XML files are stored into a specific knowledge server. Most systems using BDIAxml architecture can access knowledge from this server. We apply this BDIAXml system to domain of Hospital Information System and show that this architecture performs more efficiently than other BDI architecture system in terms of knowledge sharing, system size, and ease of use.

  • To analyze in detail the cognitive factors in the sense of place in Korea traditional temples and their occurrence and significance, the questionaring was conducted about the actual condition of visitor's using of and preference for Pulkuksa Temple as an object of the investigation. The result from the analysis of the visitors' sense of respective factors forming the image of the temple is as follows: 1. While the male visitors for outnumbered the female, the female visitors are more satisfied with the senses of the temple than male. The younger visitors are larger in number while the older visitors have the more satisfaction. It took the largest number of the visitors at least three hours to come to the temple. The most numerous are the visitors who came to the temple. The most numerous are the visitors who came to the temple by their own cars. The visitors are coming not only from the Kyunsang Provinces but from all over the country and they made a family trip to the temple. 2. 86 people among the questionees replied that the Tower stands best for Pulkuksa temple. The second largest number of the questionees replied that the main sanctuary does. The third largest number of the questionees replied that the natural environment does. 3. The visitors who came to the temple for sightseeing showed their highest preferences for each of the main sanctuary and the tower. The buddhist visitors also showed the same tendency as non Buddhist ones in their preference. 4. On the whole, the space factors such as buildings and scenes which represent Pulkuksa Temple are the towers such as Sukka Tower and Tabo Tower, the sanctuary buildings such as main sanctuary, the natural scenery such as Toham Mountain, and the steps such as Chungwun-Kyo and Paekwun-Kyo. 5. The potential factors to explain the structural characteristics of the scenery in Pulkuksa Temple are revealed to be a factor of overall valuation, of orderliness, of individuality and of comfortableness, through hypothetical. T.V was 54.1% and the orderliness of Sukkatap was highly evaluated in factor score analysis.

  • The language of architecture is a kind of tool which helps people to experience the environment not as the thing itself but as a meaningful one. It, gathered by place, constitutes 'genius loci', as the existential structures. It, in other words, gives a thing 'cognitive quality', and serve people to 'dwell' because 'a place is a gathering thing with concrete presence.' Our environment, only when it possesses the language, presents itself as a namable thing or an understood world. Such a meaningful identification is dwelling. The modern world is a complex melting-pot. It is 'complexities' and 'contradiction'. The language of architecture is never created, rather it is selected by needs of the time and the place. In this sense, architectural design means discovery and interpretation of the poetic order of architypal form and style, and the poetic order is a way for people to dwell in the humanistic sense. These reminds me of Martin Heidegger's statement : "Architecture belongs to poetry, and its purpose is to help man to dwell."

  • In this study, we employ CPM-GOMS analysis for explaining physical and cognitive processes and for quantitatively predicting when users are typing Korean text messages on mobile phones using both hands. First, we observe the behaviors of 10 subjects, when the subjects enter keypads with both hands. Then, basing upon MHP, we categorize the behaviors into perceptual, cognitive, motor operators, and then we analyze those operators. After that, we use the critical paths to model two task sentences. Also, we used Fitts' law method which was applied many times to predict text entering time on mobile phone to compare with the results of our CPM-GOMS model. We followed Lee's (2008) method that is well suited for text entry task using both hands and calculate total task time for each task sentences. For the sake of comparison between the actual data and the results predicted from our CPM-GOMS model, we empirically tested 10 subjects and concluded that there were no significant differences between the predicted values and the actual data. With the CPM-GOMS model, we can observe the human information processes composed on the physical and cognitive processes. Also we verified that the CPM-GOMS model can be well applied to predict the users' performance when they input text messages on mobile phones using both hands by comparing the predicted total task time with the real execution time.

  • Disruptions in manufacturing systems caused by system changes and disturbances such as the tool wear, machine breakdown, malfunction of transporter, and so on, reduce the productivity and the increase of downtime and manufacturing cost. In order to cope with these challenges, a new method to build an intelligent manufacturing system with biological principles, namely an ant colony inspired manufacturing system, is presented. In the developed system, the manufacturing system is considered as a swarm of cognitive agents where work-pieces, machines and transporters are controlled by the corresponding cognitive agent. The system reacts to disturbances autonomously based on the algorithm of each autonomous entity or the cooperation with them. To develop the ant colony inspired manufacturing system, the disturbances happened in the machining shop of a transmission case were analyzed to classify them and to find out the corresponding management methods. The system architecture with the autonomous characteristics was generated with the cognitive agent and the ant colony technology. A test bed was implemented to prove the functionality of the developed system.

  • The urban representative landscapes play a leading role in establishing city identity via a symbol of the city and a mediator to make the city all the more worthy of being peculiarized. The study aims at evaluating the perceptive factors in the representative landscapes around the metropolitan Seoul derived from the preliminary researches through questionnaire surveying, in an attempt to analyze their characteristics by type and reason, while further proposing progressive management plans. This study was mostly focused on the visibility factor, activity factor, aesthetic factor and cultural factor influencing on the cognition of urban representative landscapes. The important findings discovered in this research are as follows. First, it was found that people were being interested more on the cultural factors and the activity factors these days rather than visibility factors in the cognition of urban representative landscapes. Second, it was found that the priority rank of urban representative landscapes revealed in this study based on the total account of more diverse perceptive factors, showed so much alteration compared to the previous researches focused mostly upon the visual image.
