  • Noise and vibration was encountered in exhaust duct system which is connected with a gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator(HRSG) of a cogeneration power plants. Especially, these problems occurred when water was added to the fuel injection to reduce NOx contents of the exhaust gas. Through the cavity mode analysis and measurements, It was concluded that these problems occurred due to the acoustic resonance between the duct cavity mode and the excitation force induced by turbulent gas flow during water injection. To reduce the noise and vibration, optimal baffle plate to change the cavity mode was installed inside of duct and noise levels of about 8 dB(A) are reduced in duct system. The effects of baffle plate and guide vane to the HRSG or inlet duct vibration were also evaluated and it was verified that there is no relation to the resonance phenomena. So, vibration of inlet duct was easily reduced by the reinforcement of structures.

  • An analysis program for the thermal performance prediction of steam turbine cogeneration systems with multi-extraction, reheat and regeneration has been developed on the basis of the thermodynamic heat balance method. Heat balance analyses were performed for a commercial cogeneration power plant using the program. Its appropriateness was verified by comparing its heat balance results with those of other commercial programs and those provided by the original system designer. Further parametric analyses were carried out and performance improvement measures in designing the plant were suggested.

  • High pressure steam pipe in power plants is subjected to service conditions under which creep processes take place limiting the component's lifetime. To ensure a safe and economic operation it is necessary to get accurate information about the lifetime situation of single components as well as of the whole system. Careful evaluation is combined with FEM analysis, NDT, microstructure evaluation. Especially, 14MoV63 steel is used as material for main steam pipe for 30 years old power plants. In service inspections have shown an increasing number of cracks and creep cavities beside stress concentration parts. A detailed analysis came to the conclusion that lifetime has been consumed to a high degree, 80%level.

  • Exergetic and thermoeconomic analyses were performed fer a 137-MW steam power plant. In these analyses, mass and energy conservation laws were applied to each component of the system. Quantitative balance of the exergy and exergetic cost for each component, and for the whole system was carefully considered. The exergo-economic model, which represented the productive structure of the system was used to visualize the cost formation process and the productive interaction between components. The computer program developed in this study can determine production costs of power plants, such as gas-and steam-turbines plants and gas-turbine cogeneration plants. The program can also be used to study plant characteristics, namely, thermodynamic performance and sensitivity to changes in process and/or component design variables.

  • In this study, cogeneration power plants that use biomass as a raw material to convert them into energy have recently received a lot of attention worldwide and are gradually increasing in South Korea. Therefore, in order to confirm the possibility of using the generated floor material as a fine aggregate for concrete, properties and stability evaluation experiments were performed. Compared to standard sand, the compressive strength of wood chip aggregate was improved by 11 % to 111 %, the length change rate was 89 %, and the waste processing test results met all criteria for hazardous substances. All of these are satisfied, and it is judged that the floor materials by the cogeneration power plant can be used as a fine aggregate for concrete.

  • Recently, it is considered that environment and energy are critical issues all over the world. In power generation sector in Korea, almost power stations are constructed and operated as cogeneration plants in conformity with this trend. KDHC(Korea District Heating Corporation) goes one step further adopting renewable energy technology like heat pump using wasted heat for energy-saving and environment improvement. This study investigates the performance characteristics by the location of waste heat recovery heat pumps of 5 Gcal/h capacity in 150 MW-class Gwang-gyo cogeneration plant using commercial software 'THERMOFLEX'. Prior to analysis, the simulations are performed with actual operation data, and then the validation of simulations is verified by checking the error within 2%. After verification, the simulations are carried out with 3 locations and the effect on electrical power output and heat output is analyzed. As a result, overall efficiency of cogeneration plant is the highest in the case of heat pump located before DH(District Heating) Heater because of the largest increase of heat output despite of decrease of electrical power output.

  • The tendency to renewables is one of the consequences of changing attitudes towards energy issues. As a result, solar energy, which is the leader among renewable energies based on availability and potential, plays a crucial role in full filing global needs. Significant problems with the solar thermal power plants (STPP) are the operation time, which is limited by daylight and is approximately half of the power plants with fossil fuels, and the capital cost. Exergy analysis survey of STPP hybrid with PCM storage carried out using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) program with genetic algorithm (GA) for three different scenarios, based on eight decision variables, which led us to decrease final product cost (electricity) in optimized scenario up to 30% compare to base case scenario from 28.99 $/kWh to 20.27 $/kWh for the case study. Also, in the optimal third scenario of this plant, the inner carbon dioxide gas cycle produces 1200 kW power with a thermal efficiency of 59% and also 1000 m3/h water with an exergy efficiency of 23.4% and 79.70 kg/h with an overall exergy efficiency of 34% is produced in the tetrageneration plant.

  • In industrial and fluid handling systems, frequently the protective film forming materials suffer from severe corrosion due to microbial effects. As an example, various micro-organisms, including bacteria, exist in seawater normally fed to power and desalination plants. Unless seawater intakes are properly disinfected to control these microbial organisms, biological fouling and microbial induced corrosion (MIC) will be developed. This problem could destroy metallic alloys used for plant construction. Seawater intakes of cogeneration plants are usually disinfected by chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite solution. The dose of disinfectant is designed according to the level of contamination of the open seawater in the vicinity of the plant intake. Higher temperature levels, lower pH, reduced flow velocity and oxidation potential play an important role in the enhancement of microbial induced corrosion and bio-fouling. This paper describes, in brief, the different types of bacteria, mechanisms of microbiological induced corrosion, susceptibility of different metal alloys to MIC and possible solutions for mitigating this problem in industry. A case study is presented for the power plant steam condenser at Al-Taweelah B-station in Abu Dhabi. The study demonstrates resistance of Titanium tubes to MIC.

  • The recent development of efficient thermal prime movers for distributed generation id changing the focus of the production of electricity from large centralized power plants to local generation units scattered over the territory. The scientific communality is addressing the analysis and planning of the distributed energy resources(der) with wide spread approaches, taking into account technical, environmental, economical and social issues. The coupling of cogeneration system to absorption/electric chillers or heat pumps as well as the interactions with renewable sources, allow for setting up multi-generation systems for building cooling heating and power(BCHP) systems of different energy vectors such as electricity, heat(at different enthalpy levels), cooling power, hydrogen, various chemical substances and so forth. Adoption of the composite multi-generation systems may lead to significant benefits in term of higher efficiency, reduced $CO_2$ emissions and enhanced economy. This paper outlines the main aspects of the BCHP system framework, illistrating its characteristics and summarizing the relevant distributed multi-generation structures.
