  • In the prestressed concrete structures, the effective prestressing force of tendon is basically most important item for structural safety and serviceability. The frictional loss is one of the major items for determinating the effective prestressing force and depend on the construction accuracy of the structures. In this thesis, it will be analyzed and found through measured hydraulic jack pressure, tendon elongation and prestressing control system that the tendancy of apparent curvature friction coefficient, the ratio of jacking force and required prestressing force, the ratio of initial jacking force and required prestressing force and compatibility of specified friction loss coefficient. The specified control limit for curvature friction coefficient of prestressing control system is about 0.25 and wobble friction coefficient 0.005. Thus, the control limit should be modified according to changed vale of friction coefficient.

  • This paper presents an adaptive approach to control the amount of slip of the torque converter bypass clutch using its estimated friction coefficient. The proposed approach can be readily implemented using the inexpensive speed sensors currently installed in an automobile. A measurement feedback control law to drive the slip error to zero together with an adaptation law to identify the unknown friction coefficient is developed using the Lyapunov control design method. The robustness of the control and adaptation laws to parametric and/or torque uncertainties as well as the convergence of the friction coefficient are investigated. Simulation results verify the viability of the proposed control algorithm in real-world vehicle control applications.

  • Present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of composition ratio and temperature on the friction and wear of PTFE-polyimide composites under the atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The load range was 0.62-3.46 MPa, and the temperature range was room temperature and 200$^{\circ}$C. To mention some of the notable results, friction coefficient of PTFE 100% varied relatively little within the given load and temperature ranges. Polyimide 100% showed the lowest friction coefficient of 0.06 at 200$^{\circ}$C among all the experiments. PTFE 80%-polyimide 20% showed the lowest wear factors on the whole. Friction coefficient of PTFE 20%-polyimide 80% varied from the highest 0.35 to the lowest 0.09 among all the materials at room temperature, and showed almost the same lowest values with polyimide 100% at 200$^{\circ}$C. Suggestion of friction and wear mechanisms of the materials was tried to explain the observed phenomena including above mentioned results.

  • The use of carbon materials in mechanical components such as bearings, seals, and bushings that do not require lubricants is increasing rapidly. This paper reports on establishing the optimal condition for resin-bonded carbon materials. We fixed the content ratio of materials, which include graphite powder and diatomite as a lubricant modifier and a friction modifier, respectably, with resin used as a bonding material. We then produced bushings using hot-pressing within the temperature range of resin curing. The properties of bushing, the friction coefficient, wear rate and the mechanical strengths are discussed in relation to the content of respective materials, with correlation of friction coefficient and sliding distance. Finally, we examined the friction coefficient changes according to the applied load on bushing and the friction coefficient changes according to contact speed of bushing.

  • Electric motors are widely used from precision industry to home appliance. For the precision control of the motors, if it is possible, we need the information of the correct motor parameters. In the motor torque equation, the motor inertia moment and the viscosity friction coefficient are regarded as constant. However the viscosity friction coefficient is not constant in the real system. In this paper, we show that the viscosity friction coefficient has the nonlinear property through the real test and we present the nonlinear function for the viscosity friction coefficient.

  • PTFE(polytetrafluoroetylene) is widely used as representative sliding friction materials, but there could be difficulties in applying it to various industry fields by the shortage of carrying capacity under high facial pressure and by the change of friction coefficient according to the environmental conditions. Accordingly, this study was to do comparative analysis on the friction coefficient by environmental temperature at the same facial pressure of UHMWPE which was mainly used as sliding friction materials under high facial pressure. In addition, this study was to proceed with the double shear structure by using two test specimen in order to minimize the frictional forces.

  • In this study, application feasibility of Magneto-rheological elastomer to friction control is investigated to identify the reciprocating friction and wear performance in applied magnetic field. Friction and wear of MR elastomerare measured by reciprocating tester by controlling the magnetic field. In the case of applied magnetic field, the coefficient of friction increases as both load and velocity increase. For the case of no magnetic field, the value of coefficient of friction hardly changes during the test. The amount of destruction is measured through cross section images of MR elastomer after tests. The depths of destruction are compared for MR elastomer with or without magnetic field. The results show that the depth of destruction of MR elastomer with magnetic field is deeper than without magnetic field. Based on the obtained results, optimal braking and driving performance can be achieved by controlling the coefficient of friction of MR elastomer, which can be applied to various industrial applications such as driving systems of automobiles and robots.

  • Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction. The average friction coefficient of nano-oil was reduced by 60% compared to raw oil under 600 N and 1,000 rpm. It is believed that the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were also investigated by the optical and atomic force microscopy. Conclusively, it is expected that wear and friction coefficient of compressor can be reduced by alignment applying nano-oil as refrigerant oil.

  • Effects of resin contents, number of carbonization, graphitization, sliding speed, and oxidation on friction and wear behavior of carbon/carbon composite materials were investigated. Friction and wear tests were carried out under various sliding conditions. An experimental setup was designed and built in the laboratory. Stainless steel disks were used as the counterface material. Friction coefficient, emperature, and wear factor were measured with a data acquisition system. Wear surfaces were observed by the scanning electron microscope. It has been shown that the average friction coefficient was increased with the sliding speed in the range of 1.43~6.10 m/s, but it as decreased in the range of 6.10~17.35 m/s. Specimens prepared by different numbers of carbonization. showed variations in friction coefficient and friction coefficient of the graphitized specimen was the highest. Friction coefficients depended on contribution of the plowing and adhesive components. As the number of carbonization was increased, wear factor was reduced. Wear factor of the graphitized specimens dropped further. In the case of graphitized specimens, sliding speed had a large influence on wear behavior. When the tribological experiments were conducted in nitrogen atmosphere, the wear factor was decreased to two thirds of the wear factor obtained in air. It is obvious that the difference was affected by oxidation. Results of friction and wear tests were applied to a neural network system based on the backpropagation algorithm. A neural network may be a valuable tool for prediction of tribological behavior of the carbon/carbon composite material if ample data are present.

  • The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance according to the change of apply load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and the wear test results exhibited as following ; The epoxy matrix composites showed lower coefficient of friction compared to the neat epoxy through the whole sliding distance. As increasing the sliding velocity the epoxy matrix composites indicated lower coefficient of friction, whereas the neat epoxy showed higher coefficient of friction as increasing the sliding velocity. The specific friction work of both materials were increased with apply load. In case of the epoxy matrix composites, the running in periods of friction were reduced as increase in apply load. The epoxy matrix composites were improved the wear resistance by adding the nano silica particles remarkably. It is expected that the load carrying capacity of the epoxy matrix composites will be improved by increase of Pv factor.
