  • The physiochemical characteristics and sensory properties of the Samgyetang herb to which different dried medicinal herbs were added were investigated to find the best formulation for the product. For the Samgyetang herbal product, Schizandra chinensis, Atractylodes lancea, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and Zizyphus jujube were used at a fixed ratio in the formulation, and Paeonia lactiflora (PL), Codonopsis lanceolata (CL), and Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) were added, with different amounts. The pH of Samgyetang increased along with the SB amount, and the soluble-solid content increased along with the CL amount. S7, which had the highest SB addition level, had the highest L value, and the b values were the highest in S7, which had the highest SB addition level. In the sensory evaluation, S7, which had the highest amount of SB, had the highest score in flavor, taste, and overall acceptability. In conclusion, the best formulation for Samgyetang would include PL 8 g, CL 4 g, SB 12 g, Schizandra chinensis 6 g, Atractylodes lancea 4 g, Glycyrrhiza uralensis 2 g, and Zizyphus jujube 4 g.

  • The present study was designed to investigate the antihyperlipidemic effect of Coconopsis lanceolata extract in C57BL/6J mice. The mice were divided into four groups: normal diet group (ND), high fat diet group (HFD), positive control group with 0.05% metformin (PC), Coconopsis lanceolata extract group (UCL). After 5 weeks of feeding, average body weight of the UCL group mice was slightly decreased, while that of the HFD group significantly increased) Also, liver and adipose tissue weights in the UCL group significantly increased. The levels of trigliceride (TG) and total in the plasma of UCL-supplemented group were significantly lower than those of high fat diet group. On the other hand, HDL-cholesterol level was increased. Expression level of proteins related with adipogenesis such as SREBP-1c, ACC, and FAS in the liver of the UCL group mice was much lower comparing with the HFD group mice. In conclusion, the results showed that the Coconopsis lanceolata extract possesses significant antihyperlipidemic effects in C57BL/6J mice.

  • To study the effect of crop rotation on the control of ginseng root rot, growth characteristics and root rot ratio of 2-year-old ginseng was investigated after the crops of 18 species were cultured for one year in soil contaminated by the pathogen of root rot. Fusarium solani and Cylindrocarpon destructans were detected by 53.2% and 37.7%, respectively, from infected root of 4-year-old ginseng cultivated in soil occurring the injury by continuous cropping. Content of $NO_3$, Na, and $P_2O_5$ were distinctly changed, while content of pH, Ca, and Mg were slightly changed when whole plant of crops cultured for one year were buried in the ground. All of EC, $NO_3$, $P_2O_5$, and K were distinctly increased in soil cultured sudangrass, peanut, soybean, sunnhemp, and pepper. All of EC, $NO_3$, $P_2O_5$, and K among inorganic component showed negative effect on the growth of ginseng when they were excessively applied on soil. The growth of ginseng was promoted in soil cultivated perilla, sweet potato, sudangrass, and welsh onion, while suppressed in Hwanggi (Astragalus mongholicus), Deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata) Doraji (Platycodon grandiflorum), Gamcho (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), Soybean. All of chicory, lettuce, radish, sunnhemp, and welsh onion had effective on the inhibition of ginseng root rot, while legume such as soybean, Hwanggi, Gamcho, peanut promoted the incidence of root rot. Though there were no significant correlation, $NO_3$ showed positive correlation, and Na showed negative correlation with the incidence of root rot.

  • Sugar beet nematode (Heterodera schachtii Schmidt) was first detected in 2011, in Chinese cabbage grown in the highland areas of Korea. Chemical control of the nematode by nematicides is not feasible due to its cyst-forming characteristics; therefore, the cultivation of non-host crops is a preferable alternative to utilize nematode-infected fields. In this study, a total of 276 plant cultivars belonging to 18 different families were screened to evaluate their resistance to the nematode. Based on the number of cysts formed following nematode inoculation, the tested crops were classified into 3 levels: susceptible, moderately susceptible, and resistant/immune. Among the 276 cultivars tested, 106 cultivars were susceptible, 40 cultivars were moderately susceptible, and 130 cultivars were resistant/immune. Among the resistant/immune cultivars, cyst formation was not observed on eggplant, tomato, lettuce, perilla, carrot, celery, watermelon, oriental melon, cucumber, pumpkin, chives, onion, welsh onion, balloon flower roots, deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata), Jandae (Adenophora triphylla), and bean. Therefore, these plants are regarded as immune to the cyst nematode. However, many crops belonging to Solanaceae, Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Poaceae families showed moderate susceptibility or immunity, depending on the crop or cultivar. This study provides a basis for alternative crop recommendations for sugar beet nematode cyst-infected farms in Chinese cabbage production areas.

  • This paper contains the results obtained by ecological investigation of flora in Muie Island of Incheon Harbor in the western coast in Korea. 14 varieties, 147 species, 57 families and 142 genera of Tracheophyta were recorded by field investigations conducted over three times in May and July, 1976 and August, 1980. The flora of this island showed a plant community predominated by Pinus densiflora grown in miggle with Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata and Rhododendron mucronulatum. Generally, the number of plant species was scarce, but it was an unexpected result that such remote mountainous plants as Lysimachia clethroides, Syneilesis palmate and Lilium disticum etc. were encountered in a wood surrounding Seohwang-dang, the shrine of a tutelary deity, on 126-Meter Hill at the northern end of the island. There also countered in Hoyong mountain valley were deciduous broad-leaved forests without pine tree which mainly consisted of Prunus leveilleana, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Platycarya strofilada, Quercus serrata, Quercus acutissima and Acer mono. In addition, herbaceous plants, such as Syneilesis palmata, Codonopsis lanceolata and Lysima barystachy were grown as the undergrowth of these forests. Drosera rotundifolia, an unlooked-for plant, appeared in the middle of the eastern coast of the island. Camellia jpaonica was gro주 spontaneously in Deogjeog Island 26km southwest from the island, while no evergreen broa-leaved tree could be located except 2 species of Vitex rotundifolia and Euonyhmus japonica. It may be considered that such simple flora of this island compared with that of land is attributed to the fact that the formation of the former took place in the period far latter than that of the latter.

  • Campanulaceae having the most growing areas among medicinal crops cultivated in Korea occasionally failed to establish a reasonable standing in practice. The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of prechilling (0 : 4 : 8 days), light quality (red : white : dark) and daily irradiation hours (8 : 12 : 16) after sowing on seed germination and radicle elongation of Campanulaceae (Platycodon grandiflorum : Codonopsis lanceolata : C. pjlosula) to give an information on their earlier standing establishment. Mean germination rate of P. grandiflorum was the highest but that of C. pilosula was the lowest regardless of all the treatments. 12 hours irradiation or prechilling increased to 8 days enhanced their earlier or later germination, respectively. White light increased the rate of P. grandiflorum but alleviated that of C. lanceolata regardless of the daily irradiation hours. Although prechilling eliminated such effect of white light, light quality treatment effect on their mean germination rates was influenced by period after sowing, daily irradiation hours or prechilling. On the 9th day after sowing, C. lanceolata showed the greatest radicle length, and both daily 8 hours irradiation and 8 days prechilling enforced to elongate their radicles, while P. grandjflorum and C. lanceolata more lengthened their radicles in all prechilling treatments than in no chilling but C. pilosula showed the similar result only in the 8 days prechilling.

  • Priming has been used to establish a better standing in practice as controling the seed moisture content after sowing. The experiment was done to measure the effect of priming (material ; concentration ; period) and light quality (red ; white ; dark) after sowing on seed germination and radicle elongation of Campanulaceae (Platycodon grandiflorum ; Codonopsis lanceolata ; C. pilosula) to give an information on their earlier standing establishment. The germination test was carried out with 12 hours irradiation for 9 days after priming treatment. In the darkness, the mean germination rate of all the species was decreased in the order to P. grandiflorum, C. pilosula, C. lanceolata. Their germination and radicle elongation became more inclined when primed with $Ca(CO_3)_2$ or with 50 to 150mM than with $KNO_3$ or no priming although there was no difference between priming periods. Under irradiation during their seed germination, however, the former order was changed to P. grandiflorum, C. lanceolata, C. pilosula because light quality treatment given after priming reduced the rate of C. pilosula but enhanced that of C. lanceolata. Although light quality forced after priming did not affect the mean germination rate of P. grandiflorum, it increased earlier or alltime germination of C. lanceolata or C. pilosula, respectively. White light after priming repressed germinations of C. lanceolata and C. pilosulai but increased earlier germinatin of P. grandiflorum, meaning that seed germination and radicle elongation of Campanulaceae could be determined by light quality treated after priming.

  • The safety of plant species used as a source for herbal medicines and dietary supplements has recently been questioned due to poisonings associated with the presence of cadmium (Cd) in these plants. These plants can derive Cd from their presence in the soil. Organic matter (OM) concentrations in soils could affect the availability of Cd for plants. To determine the effect of OM concentration in soil on the concentration of plant available Cd and uptake of this toxic element by medicinal plants, soil and plant samples were collected from 102 fields supporting for 5 species of medicinal plants in 6 province of South Korea. Concentrations of OM and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soils affected the phytoavailability of Cd. One M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration in soil increased with increasing OM concentrations. There were significantly positive relationships between 1 M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration and OM concentration in soil and between 1 M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration and DOC concentration. Likewise, OM and DOC concentrations significantly affected Cd concentration in medicinal plant soils. Cadmium concentration in medicinal plants increased with increasing OM concentration in soil [Cd concentration $(mg\;kg^{-1})= 0.179+1.424{\times}10^{-3}$ OM concentrations, $R^2=0.042*$] and with DOC concentration [Cd concentration $(mg\;kg^{-1})= 0.150+5.870{\times}10^{-4}$ DOC concentrations, $R^2=0.124***$]. These results might result from Cd-DOC complex which is easily absorbed Cd form by plant root. Dissolved organic carbon concentration had more positive relationship with Cd concentration in medicinal plants and 1 M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration in soils than OM. Cadmium concentration in all 5 species of medicinal plant (Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi, Astragalus membranaceus, Codonopsis lanceolata, Platycodon grandiflorum, and Rehmannia glutinosa) significantly increased with increasing DOC concentration in soil. From the above results, formation of Cd-DOC complex caused by OM application might be mainly attributed to increase in Cd concentration in medicinal plants.

  • This study investigated the effect of traditional medicinal plants on the quality characteristics of Samgyetang breast meat and broth. The traditional medicinal plants used in this study were roots of Panax ginseng, Codonopsis lanceolata, Platycodon grandiflorum, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Adenophora triphylla, and Allium hookeri. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the moisture, protein, ash content, water holding capacity, and cooking loss of Samgyetang meat with the addition of traditional medicinal plants. The color values (lightness, redness, and yellowness) of Samgyetang meat and broth were significantly different (P<0.05); the 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and shear force of Samgyetang meat were significantly different (P<0.05); and the pH, turbidity, and viscosity of Samgyetang broth were also significantly different (P<0.05) with the addition of traditional medicinal plants. In the overall acceptability of Samgyetang meat, the addition of S. miltiorrhiza showed the highest score compared to that of other treatments (P<0.05). Thus, the addition of traditional medicinal plants in the production of Samgyetang were found to affect the lipid rancidity beneficially with plant species when compared to Samgyetang with Panax ginseng. In conclusion, with the development of Samgyetang using S. miltiorrhiza, it will be possible to develop products with superior quality characteristics in antioxidant, shear force, and overall acceptability.
