  • Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthase catalyzed the last enzymic step to synthesize the intracellular PHB of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. No PHB was detected when the phbC coding for PhB synthase was interrupted, and its expression was regulated at the level of transcription. The cellular PHB content increased about four- to six-fold during the growth transition from the exponential to the early stationary phase under both aerobic and photoheterotrophic conditions. The PHB content during the aerobic growth seemed to be determined by the PhB synthase activity. However, the PHB synthase activity of photoheterotrophically grown cells did not correlate with the PhB content, suggesting a photoheterotrophic regulation different from the aerobic control. Thus, the PHB content of R. sphaeroides was regulated at the transcription level only under aerobic conditions.

  • Developing tailor made Multimedia courseware ensuring effective implementation of instruction strategies is a challenge that manifests in myriad problems of software design and coding. In this paper an attempt has been made to analyse and identify coding and implementation problems, in the backdrop of using two different multimedia software development tools i.e. Visual Basic and Toolbook, which underpin the development and effectiveness of use of multimedia courseware. Solutions to such problems have been discussed in context of Tool book. The examples presented in this paper are based on the experience of designing and implementation of two large scale professional quality Multimedia courseware development projects.

  • This paper presents adaptive learning data of evolvable neural networks (ENNs) for time series prediction of nonlinear dynamic systems. ENNs are a special class of neural networks that adopt the concept of biological evolution as a mechanism of adaptation or learning. ENNs can adapt to an environment as well as changes in the environment. ENNs used in this paper are L-system and DNA coding based ENNs. The ENNs adopt the evolution of simultaneous network architecture and weights using indirect encoding. In general just previous data are used for training the predictor that predicts future data. However the characteristics of data and appropriate size of learning data are usually unknown. Therefore we propose adaptive change of learning data size to predict the future data effectively. In order to verify the effectiveness of our scheme, we apply it to chaotic time series predictions of Mackey-Glass data.

  • In this paper, some new results on minimum-bandwidth system are presented. First, we state sufficient condition for the existance of a existance of a power spectral null at the zero frequency and Nyquist frequency. Second, eye boundary functions and eyewidth are obtained for minimum-bandwidth systems of arbitrary numbers of transmitted symbol levels. Third, for linear minimum-bandwidth systems usually known as PR systems, we derived formulars for evaluating DSVs and ASVs in terms of the coefficients of the system polynomials and using formulars, we obtain DSVs and ASVs of various PR systems. Last, the relations among DSV, ASV, power spectral nulls, system polynomial nulls, and the minimum-bandwidth property are summarized.

  • In this paper, the composition method of global and local fuzzy reasoning concepts is researched for reducing the number of rules, not losing the performance for fuzzy controller. A new method is proposed in details that controls the interaction between global reasoning and local reasoning. In order to automatically acquire and optimize the method, the DNA coding algorithm is introduced to the local fuzzy reasoning of the proposed composition fuzzy reasoning method. The method is applied to the real liquid level control system for the purpose of evaluating the Performance. The simulation results show that the proposed technique can produce the fuzzy rules with higher accuracy and feasibility than the conventional methods.

  • In the area of the speech synthesis techniques, the waveform coding methods maintain the intelligibility and naturalness of synthetic speech. In order to apply the waveform coding techniques to synthesis by rule, we must be able to alter the pitches of synthetic speech. In this paper, we propose a new pitch altering method that compensates phase distortion of the cepstral pitch alteration method with time scaling method in the time domain. This method can remove some spectrum distortion which is occurred in conjunction point between the waveforms. For performance test the spectrum distortion rate was used as objective criterion and the MOS(Mean Opinion Score) was used as subjective criterion. As a result, the spectrum distortion and MOS are obtained by 0.66% and 3.9, respectively.

  • In this paper, we focus on maximizing weighted sum energy efficiency (EE) for a multi-cell multi-user channel. In order to solve this non-convex problem, we first decompose the original problem into a sequence of parallel subproblems which can optimized separately. For each subproblem, a base station employs dirty paper coding to maximize the EE for users within a cell while regulating interference induced to other cells. Since each subproblem can be transformed to a convex multiple-access channel problem, the proposed method provides a closed-form solution for power allocation. Then, based on the derived optimal covariance matrix for each subproblem, a local optimal solution is obtained to maximize the sum EE. Finally, simulation results show that our algorithm based on non-linear precoding achieves about 20 percent performance gains over the conventional linear precoding method.

  • DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques provides a basic theory for the implementation of low-power video encoder. Conventional methods decide the parity bit request at decoder side. These are effective in controlling the bit-rate, but, are not able to control the visual quality. Thus, this paper presents an effective method of estimating visual quality improved by correcting the virtual channel noise for the reconstructed frame. Through several experiments, it is shown that the proposed method are able to estimate effectively the decoded visual quality.

  • In this paper, we first point out the limitation of the existing methods in usability evaluation, and propose a new method to find tasks and users that can cause problems in the use of software applications. To deal with object-based applications, we define unit actions and divide a given task into the sequence of unit actions. Then, we propose a new measure to calculate the degree of lostness for the unit actions. In several experiments, we show the proposed method can represent the usability well while the previous method has a problem in object-based applications. We also find that the user's evaluation is more related to the proposed method than the previous method based on execution time through correlation analysis.
