  • We consider the use of error control coding in direct sequence-code-division multiple access (OS-COMA) systems that employ multiuser detection (MUO) and space diversity. The relative performance gain between Reed-Solomon (RS) code and convolutional code (CC) is well known in [1] for the single user, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this case, RS codes outperform CC's at high signal-to-noise ratios. We find that this is not the case for the multiuser interference channel mentioned above. For useful error rates, we find that soft-decision CC's to be uniformly better than RS codes when used with DS-COMA modulation in multiuser space-time channels. In our development, we use the Gaussian approximation on the interference to determine performance error bounds for systems with low number of users. Then, we check their accuracy in error rate estimation via system's simulation. These performance bounds will in turn allow us to consider a large number of users where we can estimate the gain in user-capacity due to channel coding. Lastly, the use of turbo codes is considered where it is shown that they offer a coding gain of 2.5 dB relative to soft-decision CC.

  • The Wireless Internet services widely spread out with the developments of CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) networks and wireless units. In contrast to the telecommunication network, WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) enables to transmit data and voice in personal area. Although WPAN technologies are commercially utilized, the combined services with COMA network are not so poplar up to now. Various services can be provided using the combination between COMA and WPAN. This paper presents the practical and united model between COMA and WPAN. Specially, the main focus of this research lies on the design of the Middle-ware system of a handset which could be managing both COMA and WPAN. This system used Bluethooth by WPAN. For the devices with the proposed WPAN Middle-ware, service areas of the COMA network can be expanded to WPAN, various services can be realized by the transmission of data and voice, and consequently, the user computing environment could be improved.

  • In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (COMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) is considered In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical COMA network can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations in the decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the indoor optical wireless LANs.

  • Rapid time variations of the mobile communication channel have a dramatic effect on the performance of multi-carrier modulation. This paper analyzed the bit error rate (BER) performance for multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) network, and derived the equivalent signal-to-total noise plus interference(SNIR) of MC-CDMA system in the reverse link, the performance of MC-CDMA/BPSK signal is evaluated taking into account the fraction of partial-band interference and interference power. and the effect of partial-band interference is comprehensively studied in order to further improve the Qos of multi-carrier multimedia system.

  • In this paper, a generalized blind adaptive algorithm is introduced for multi-user detection of direct sequence code division multiple access (OS-COMA) wireless communication systems. The main property of the proposed algorithm is its ability to resolve the multipath fading channel resulting in inter symbol interference (ISI) as well as multiple access interference (MAI). Other remarkable properties are its low complexity and mitigation to the near-far problem as well as its insensitivity to asynchronous transmission. The proposed system is based on the minimization of the output energy and convergence to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector. It is blind in the sense that it needs no knowledge of the other users' signatures, only the intended user signature and timing are required. Furthermore, the convergence of the minimum output energy (MOE) detector to the MMSE detector is analytically proven in case of M-ary PSK. Depicted results show that the performance of the generalized system dominates those previously considered. Further improvements are obtained when multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique is employed.

  • A multi-used detector(MUD) using a radial basis function(RBF) network is proposed in a multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system. In the proposed scheme, a RBF network is connected to the frequency domain in order to effectively utilize the frequency diversity. Simulations have been performed over the frequency selective and multipath fading channel. From these simulations, the proposed receiver is verified to be used for making the performance improvement in combating near-far effects and increasing the number of active users. The system capacity is increaed about 1.8 times at a BER of $10^{-3}$ under a single cell when the proposed scheme is compared with MUD using a parallel interference canceller(PIC).

  • In this paper, we propose a ubiquitous $SaO_2$ monitoring system for patients using oxygen therapy. For these patients, the ability to monitor oxygen saturation ubiquitously is very important fur accurate adjustment of ventilator's flow rate to match the patient's time-varying requirements with the shortest lag time possible. We have developed a portable device to measure $SaO_2$ and transmit it to hospital in real-time or in store-and-forward mode through the integration of $Bluetooth^{TM}$ technology and the code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular network. We also developed software for doctors to receive and manage the patients' $SaO_2$ information. Performance of the developed system was evaluated as acceptable by assessing the accuracy of the measured oxygen saturation value and the stability of communication network. Test results in real clinical setting demonstrate that our system is feasible for immediate use in home oxygen therapy.

  • A novel method of adaptive beam forming is presented in this paper. The proposed technique provides for a suboptimal beam pattern that increases the Signal to Noise/Interference Ratio (SNR/SIR), thus, eventually increases the capacity of the communication channel, under an assumption that the desired signal is dominant compared to each component of interferences at the receiver, which is precoditionally achieved in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile communications by the chip correlator. The main advantages of the new technique are:(1)The procedure requires neither reference signals nor training period, (2)The signal interchoerency does not affect the performance or complexity of the entire procedure, (3)The number of antennas does not have to be greater than that of the signals of distinct arrival angles, (4)The entire procedure is iterative such that a new suboptimal beam pattern be generated upon the arrival of each new data of which the arrival angle keeps changing due tot he mobility of the signal source, (5)The total amount of computation is tremendously reduced compared to that of most conventional beam forming techniques such that the suboptimal beam pattern be produced at vevery snapshot on a real-time basis. The total computational load for generating a new set of weitht including the update of an N-by-N(N is the number of antenna elements) autocovariance matrix is $0(3N^2 + 12N)$. It can further be reduced down to O(11N) by approximating the matrix with the instantaneous signal vector.
