  • In this study. differences in attention allocation patterns between expert and novIce pilots were investigated by a verbal protocol when pilots were engaged in a task during the instrument flight. Ten pilots including experts and novices were participated to conduct a pre-determined task(a fix-to-fix) on F-5E Cockpit Procedure Trainer Simulator. Experts show better performance as expected with more stable variations in speed. altitude. and attitude. In attention allocation patterns. novices allocated about 83% of attentional resources on the primary instruments (airspeed indicator. altitude indicator. and attitude) relating to the task of the basic flight while experts spent 57%. This difference in the availability of attentional resources allowed expert pilots to accomplish the task better than novices. In other words. training a pilot should consider a program for building up wider instrument scanning patterns to become an expert in a shorter time.

  • More than 90 percent of traffic accidents were caused by human errors in driving situation. However, the ergonomic studies were not enough to prevent these human errors. Especially, drivers acquire more than 70 percent of information using the vision, and this shows the importance of consideration about the driver's visual cognition characteristics. Consequently, the driver's cognition time and the cognition accuracy were measured for the Instrument Panel(IP) of vehicle cockpit in this study. For the experiment, subjects were divided in two groups. The first group of subjects had their own vehicles and the driver license, and the second group of the subjects didn't have own vehicle but had the driver license. IP Images were used in the experiment and the each image was made by changing layout of objects within devices. The results showed that there were no differences for the cognition time and the accuracy between images within the group, and the results between the groups showed the same trend.

  • The Korean Air Force FA-50 aircraft currently operating in the Air Force is using Ultra High Frequency (UHF) frequency communications for navigation communications with ground control stations or other aircraft. The pilot communicates by changing frequency at any time during flight, and performs communication by directly inputting from the Integrated Up-Front Controller installed in the cockpit. The frequency is designated as secret, and the pilot receives the task with the frequency channel number (001~xxx) and finds the frequency of the channel in the list of 4,000 frequency channels and inputs it manually. This reduces the safety and convenience of pilots' operations and exposes them to hazards that may occur especially during night flight missions. In this paper, we propose a function to embed the frequency corresponding to the frequency channel list in IMDC, the aircraft mission computer, and to automatically change the frequency when the pilot only inputs the channel number.

  • Since the VR market is expected to have a high growth, this study aimed to investigate the human factor-related determinants of user satisfaction with mobile VR headsets. A pre-study of customer reviews was conducted with the help of semantic network analysis to identify the core keywords for understanding negative and positive predictors of mobile VR headset experiences. Through laboratory testing with three different commercial models, the main study measured and identified the predictors of user satisfaction. From the results, five factors were extracted as valid predictor variables and used for regression analysis. These factors were immersion, VR sickness, usability, wear-ability and menu navigation interface. All the five predictors were proved to be significant determinants of the perceived user satisfaction with mobile VR headsets. Usability was the strongest predictor, followed by VR sickness and wear-ability. Practical and theoretical implications of the results were discussed.

  • Pilot has been fighting to get over fatigue during flight and thought it as a hinderance for safe flight. The fatigue related problem has been the biggest obstacle for aviation safety so far. Even though pilots and airlines try their best to overcome fatigue during flight, they couldn't overcome this problem. So the airliners let the pilot sleep during flight if pilots are too tired with the report. It is controlled rest used and managed by several European airliners. So this study tries to get Korean airline pilots' fatigue information and figure out the cause and reduce it.
