A study for the flame stability and the combustion characteristics of coaxial diffusion flame was conducted. The fuel employed was natural gas. The experimental variables were rim thickness of fuel tube, blockage ratio of the outer diameter of fuel tube to the inner diameter of air tube, and momentum ratio of fuel to air. It was consequently found that the stability in the neighborhood of the fuel rim depended on the rim thickness, especially in the case of above 3 mm, and that the stable region of the flame extended remarkably due to the formation of recirculation zone above rim. The effect of the blockage ratio on the flame stability was found to be minor in the case of above 3 mm of rim thickness. Between the momentum ratio 2 and 3, the stable flame zone was widely established as well good combustion. With increasing the fuel-air momentum ratio, axial velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress increased.

Experimental investigations were conducted for two hydrogen-nitrogen coaxial jet diffusion flames. A flame was a conventional coaxial jet diffusion flame and the other was a coaxial jet diffusion flame of which ambient air-jet turbulence was intensified. In this study, firstly two kinds of NOx measuring system were campared by using different convertors, secondly the NOx formation characteristics were investigated in order to examine the effect of turbulence intensity. In this study it is known that stainless convertor has some problem in the converting process from NO$_2$to NO in fuel rich region but molybdenum convertor can detect the amount of NOx correctly. The increase of turbulence intensity reduces the thermal NOx less than a half in our experiment and this effect is conspicuous near the nozzle. The conversion rate from NO to NO$_2$and the portion of NO$_2$among NOx are increased with turbulence intensity. These NOx measurements will help to understand the influences of turbulence intensity on NOx formation.
The purpose of this study is to establish the flame structure and NOx emission characteristics of the swirl flow coaxial diffusion combustion in the model gas turbine combustor. The mean temperature, ion currents and NOx emission measurement technique showed the effect of equivalence ratio into flame length and flame stability. As a result of this study, NOx emission was increased by increasing the equivalence ratio, and the peak value of the NOx was appeared near the flame front.

An experiment was performed to investigate lift-off, blow-off and combustion characteristics of a lifted coaxial diffusion flame according to fuel jet and air velocity. A jet diffusion flame which is attached on the nozzle rim begins to be lifted with increase of air velocity, and finally becomes blow-off at higher air velocity. In experiment, blow-off limit increased with increase of fuel jet velocity, however lift-off occurred at lower air velocity. Flame structure and combustion characteristics were examined by schlieren photos, temperature distributions and emission concentration distributions. Flame temperature became higher at midstream and its RMS became larger at up and downstream with increase of air velocity. Local NO concentration decreased but $CO_2$concentration increased with increase of air velocity, which shows combustion reaction becomes close to be stoichiometric at higher air velocity in spite of lift-off.
The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the l/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.

Measurements of flame length and NOx emissions have been conducted to investigate the effects of acoustic excitation on flame structure in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames with coaxial air. When the acoustic excitation of a specific frequency is applied to coaxial air stream, flame length is dramatically reduced, resulting in reduction of flame residence time. Consequently, EINOx could decrease up to 35 % and this shows that acoustic excitation is effective in reducing NOx emissions. Mie scattering technique has been used to visualize the vortex structure induced by acoustic excitation and vortex formation, development and destruction were observed quantitatively. As a result, vortex entrains coflow air into fuel stream and mixing rate between fuel and air is significantly enhanced, which may contribute to reduction of NOx emissions.

To analyze the dynamic behavior and the structure of the gaseous methane-gaseous oxygen diffusion flame formed by a swirl/shear-coaxial injector, combustion experiments were carried out under different propellant injection conditions. As a result, the OH radical emission intensity of the diffusion flame visualized through chemiluminescence was observed to increase as the propellant mass flow and the momentum flux ratio increased. And flames with swirl showed a more high radical emission intensity than those without swirl.

This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.
The flame length in coaxial diffusion flame configurations was investigated when the kerosene fuel flow rate, temperature of the oxidizer stream, and inert gas concentrations in the oxidizer stream were varied. The diffusion flame was photographed using a Schlieren camera under each of the experimental conditions and the obtained images were then digitized to measure the flame length. The measured flame lengths were proportional to the kerosene fuel flow rate and increased with increasing temperature of the oxidizer stream. In addition, increases in the inert gas concentration in the oxidizer stream resulted in stretching of the flame. In particular, the flame was further elongated in the oxidizer steam diluted with helium gas. Inert substitutions in the oxidizer stream that can adjust the viscous drag are believed to be one of the important mechanisms that affect the length of the coaxial diffusion flames.

Double coaxial are jets(annular and coaxial air jets) between which propane gas is fed was selected to study the structure of diffusion flames in turbulent shear flow. Schlieren and direct photographs are taken to visualize the flame structure. Mean and fluctuating temperatures and ion currents were measured to investigate the macroscopic and the instantaneous flame structure. The objective of this study is to understand the interaction between combustion and mixing process especially in the transition region of turbulent shear flow. The investigation reported in this paper focuses on the macroscopic and the instantaneous structures of three flames obtained. The increased mixing effect resulting from increase of Reynolds number of central air jet makes the flame bluish and short. When the velocity of surrounding air stream is higher than that of central air jet, the instantaneous flame structure is composed of coherent structure. It is considered that the flame structure of transitional region of mixing layer depends on the structure of mixing layer of non-reacting conditions.
