  • The plasma vapor coatings on two kinds of die steels have been carried out in order to identify the most optimized conditions. When TiN or TiAlN coatings were carried out on the substrates, the coating layer thicknesses were not significantly changed, and the optimized coating thickness was identified as ~ 5 μm. When the optimized coating conditions and stress analysis were applied to the primary piston dies for fabrication of aluminum cylinders, an extended life time of the die was observed. The methodology for extending the life time of dies was discussed in terms of microstructures and stress analysis.

  • Corrosion resistance is one of the essential properties required in steel bolts. The various types of coatings are used to improve the corrosion resistance of steel bolts. But, roll formed, subsequently Zn alloy electrodeposited and top coated steel bolt easily takes place the white storage stain or white rust under high humidity condition. To investigate the corrosion resistance of roll formed and subsequently the various types of coated steel bolts, their polarization curves were measured by potentio-dynamic tester in this study. Based on the measured polarization curves, the more times of chromate and top coating on roll formed steel bolt, the higher corrosion resistance was shown. The roll formed steel bolt, which was Zn-Ni electro-deposited, two times chromated, one time inorganic top coated, one time organic top coated and annealed, showed the best corrosion resistance.

  • The initial clamping forces of high strength bolts subjected to different faying surface conditions drop within 500 hours regardless of loading, any other external force or loosening of the nut. This study develops a mathematical model for relaxation confined to creep on a coated faying surface after initial clamping. The quantitative model for estimating relaxation was derived from a regression analysis for the relation between the creep strain of the coated surface and the elapsed time for 744 hours. This study establishes an expected model for estimating the relaxation of bolted joints with diverse coated surfaces. The candidate bolts are dacro-coated tension control bolts, ASTM A490 bolt, and plain tension control bolts. The test parameters were coating thickness, species of coating. As for 96, 128, 168, and $226{\mu}m$ thick inorganic zinc, when the coating thickness was increased, relaxation after the initial clamping rose to a much higher range from 10% to 18% due to creep of the coating. The amount of relaxation up to 7 days exceeded 85% of the entire relaxation. From this result, the equation for creep strain can be derived from a statistical regression analysis. Based on the acquired creep behavior, it is expected that the clamping force reflecting relaxation after the elapse of constant time can be calculated from the initial clamping force. The manufacturer's recommendation of inorganic zinc on faying surface as $75{\mu}m$, appears to be reasonable.

  • In this study, composite membrane is prepared by Layer-by-Layer method using hydrophobic polymer as a coating material on the polysulfone support. The existence of coating layer on the surface and cross section was confirmed by the scanning electronic microscopy. The flux and rejection of the resulting membranes were characterized using 100 ppm NaCl feed solution. PVSA, PEI, PAA, PSSA, PSSA_MA were used as a coating polymer in this study. The composite membrane prepared by using 8,000 ppm PAA solution (Ion strength = 0.35, Coating time = 3 min) and 10,000 ppm PEI solution (Coating time = 4 min). As a result, PAA-PEI composite membrane showed flux of 101 LMH and salt rejection of 66.7%. The composite membrane showed the comparable performance as good as NE 4040-70 (Flux = 30 LMH, Rejection = 40~70%) model produced by Toray Chemical co.

  • Anti-glare (AG) coating films are applied to various display fields such as liquid crystal displays, LED lighting, and touch panels. In this study, micrometer-sized silica particles were added as fillers in the UV-curable coating solutions to provide anti-glare effect. During this process, the effects of the particle size, content, stirring time, and mixing ratio of silica particles of different sizes were investigated on the haze values and visible light transmittance of the coating films. As a result, as the size of the silica particles increased and the content of the silica particles increased, the haze values increased, but the visible light transmittance decreased. On the other hand, the stirring time did not significantly affect the haze value and transmittance of coating films. In addition, as the mixing ratio of large-sized silica particles increased, the haze value increased, but on the contrary, the visible light transmittance decreased.

  • Surface sowing is one of the most important methods to establish and improve grassland. An interest in seed-coating technique for surface sowing has been increased tremendously in the world today. An experiment was conducted to develop a technique for pelleting seeds for pasture production in woodlands. Results showed that pelleting seeds was a better technique than coating seeds because the pelleting reduced coating time of seeds, and it increased the amounts of coated seeds per hour. The pelleting technique was able to minimize damage to seeds through the lower temperature processing and by reducing time for drying, thus, germinating energy, and germination rate of pelleted alfalfa seeds improved. Emergence, establishment, and early growth of alfalfa from pelleted seeds were also improved in woodlands. Based on this study, we could conclude that the seed-pelleting is a very useful technique for the establishment and early growth of alfalfa in woodlands.

  • To investigate the drying behaviors of the water-based natural coating made by rosin during drying, the mass transfer and optical change from speckle image and speckle rate were measured and the relationship between two analysis methods were investigated. At a linear scale, the speckle rate measured by HORUS related with the mass transfer of coating during drying, and the speckle rate at a log scale was included not only drying time, but also drying mechanism of coating during drying. Therefore, the HORUS was an available method to investigate the drying time and drying mechanism of coating during drying.

  • The characteristics, such as roughness, thickness, microhardness and corrosion resistance, of plasma electrolytic oxide coatings on AZ91D alloy were investigated under the processing condition of various coating times. The coatings on AZ91D alloy consisted of MgO, $MgAl_{2}O_{4}$ and $Mg_{2}SiO_{4}$ oxides. The surface roughness and thickness of coatings became larger with increasing the coating time. The microhardness in cross section of coatings was much higher than not only that in surface but that in the conventional anodic oxide coatings, which increased progressively as the coating time increased. After being immersed in 3.5%NaCl solution and methyl alcohol, the corrosion resistance of AZ91D alloy was markedly improved by plasma electrolytic oxidation coating treatment, and the AZ91D alloy coated for 50min revealed excellent corrosion resistance.

  • Cost efficiency is today the primary requirement in the paper and board industry. This has led therefore, to a greater preponderance of products with specifically designed functionality to take account of current industry needs. Continually increasing machine coating speeds together with these new coating colour components have put more emphasis on the importance of the correct rheology and water retention of the coating colours to achieve good runnability and end product quality. In the coating process, some penetration of the aqueous phase, to the base paper or board must occur to anchor the pre-coating to the base or the topcoat to the pre-coat. The aqueous phase acts as a vehicle not only for the binder, but also for the other components. If this water or material penetration is not controlled, there will be excessive material shift from the coating colour to the base, before immobilization of the coating colour will stop this migration. This can result in poor machine runnability, unstable system and uneven coating layer, impacting print quality. The performance of rheology modifiers or thickeners on the coating color have tended to be evaluated by the term, "water retention". This simple term is not sufficient to explain their performance changes during coating. In this paper we are introducing a new concept of "material retention", which takes note of the total composition of the coating colour material and therefore goes beyond the concept of only water retention. Controlled material retention leads to a more uniform z-directional distribution of coating colour components. The changes that can be made to z-directional uniformity will have positive effects on print quality as measured by surface strength, ink setting properties, print gloss, mottling tendency. Optical properties, such as light scattering, whiteness and light fastness delivery should also be improved. Additionally, controlled material retention minimizes changes to the coating colour with time in re-circulation giving less fluctuation in quality in the machine direction since it more closely resembles fresh coating for longer periods. Use of the material retention concept enables paper and board producers to have more stable runnability (i.e. lower process costs), improved end product quality (i.e. better performance of used chemicals) and/or optimized use of coating colour components (i.e. lower total formulation cost)
