  • Nitride films such as TiN, CrN etc. deposited on glass by PVD processes have been developed for many industrial applications. These nitride films deposited on glass were widely used for not only decorative and optical coatings but also wear and corrosion resistance coatings employed as dies and molds made of glass for the example of lens forming molds. However, the major problem of nitride coatings on glass by PVD process is non-uniform film owing to pin-hole and micro crack. It is estimated that nonuniform coating is influenced by a different surface energy between metal nitrides and glass due to binding states. In this work, therefore, for the evaluation of nucleation and growth mechanism of nitride films on glass TiN and CrN film were synthesized on glass with various nitrogen partial pressure by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Prior to deposition, for the examination of relationship between surface energy and film microstructure plasma pre-treatment process was carried out with various argon to hydrogen flow rate and substrate bias voltage, duty cycle and frequency by using pulsed DC power supply. Surface energy owing to the different plasma pre-treatment was calculated by the measurement of wetting angle and surface conditions of glass were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). The microstructure change of nitride films on glass with increase of film thickness were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).

  • Silica membranes were prepared on a porous metal sheet by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method for gas separation at high temperatures. In order to improve the permselectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived $silica/\gamma-alumina$ intermediate layer by pyrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) at 873 K. The pyrolysis with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores, Knudsen diffusion regime, that were left unplugged in the membranes. At permeation temperature of 523 K, the silica/alumina composite membrane showed $H_2/N_2$ and water/methanol selectivity as high as 17 and 16, respectively, by molecular sieve effect.

In order to remove the coffee ring effect in the ink drop, we have introduced a co-solvent system in order to create Marangoni flow in the ink drop, which leads to the dense packing of ceramic powders on the substrate during inkjet process. The packing density of the Inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ films is around 60% (max. 70%) which is very high compared to the value obtained from the same material films by other conventional methods such as film casting, dip coating process, etc. The voids inside the films (which are around 40% of the entire film volume) are filled with the polymer resin (Cyanate ester) by the infiltration process. This resin infiltration is also implemented by the inkjet printing process right after the Ah03 film ink-jetting process. The microstructures of the printed $Al_2O_3$ films are investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to understand the degree of packing density in the printed films. The inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ films have been characterized to investigate its thickness and roughness. Quality factor of the printed $Al_2O_3$ film is also measured to be over 300 at 1MHz.

  • A simple and very flexible automatic dipping machine was constructed for producing functional multilayer films on wide substrates via the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The proposed machine exhibits several features that allow a fully automated coating operation, such as various depositing recipes, control of the dipping depth and time, operating speed, and rinsing flow, air-assist drying nozzles, and an operation display. The machine uniformly dips a substrate into aqueous mixtures containing complementary (e.g., oppositely charged, capable of hydrogen bonding, or capable of covalent bonding) species. Between the dipping of each species, the sample is spray cleaned with deionized water and blow-dried with air. The dipping, rinsing, and drying areas and times are adjustable by a computer program. Graphene-based thin films up to ten-bilayers were prepared and characterized. This film exhibits the highly filled multilayer structures and low thermal resistance, indicating that the robotic dipping system is simple to produce functional thin film coatings with a variety of different layers.

  • In a mass manufacturing system of optical fibers, the sufficient cooling of glass fibers freshly drawn from a draw furnace is essential, asinadequately cooled glass fibers can lead to poor resin coating on the fiber surface and possibly fiber breakage during the process. In order to improve fiber cooling at a high drawing speed, it is common to use a helium injection into a glass fiber cooling unit in spite of the high cost of the helium supply. The present numerical analysis carried out three-dimensional thermo-fluid computations of the cooling gas flow and heat transfer on moving glass fiber to determine the cooling performance of glass fiber cooling depending on the method of helium injection. The results showed that afront injection of helium is most effective compared to a uniform or rear injection for reducing air entrainment into the unit and thus cooling the glass fibers at a high fiber drawing speed. However, above a certain amount of injected helium, there was no more increase of the cooling effect regardless of the helium injection method.

  • In the hot section of a gas turbine, the turbine blades were protected from high temperature by providing a thermal barrier coating (TBC) as well as by cooling air flowing through internal passages within the blades. The cooling air then passed through discrete holes on the blade surface, creating a film of cooling air that further protects the surface from the hot mainstream flow. The holes are subjected to stresses resulting from the lateral growth of thermally grown oxide, the thermal expansion misfit between the constituent layers, and the centrifugal force due to high-speed revolution; these stresses often result in cracking. In this study, the deformation and cracks occurring near a hole on a heat-resistant alloy subjected to thermo-mechanical cycling were investigated. The experiment showed that cracks formed around the hole depending on the applied stress level and the number of cycles. These results could be explained by our analytic solution.

  • Protein affinity membranes were prepared via coating of chitosan gel on the porous flat and hollow-fiber polysulfone membranes, followed by the immobilization of the reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) to the chitosan gel. Maximum protein binding capacity of these affinity membranes was about 70 $\mu{g/cm}^2$. Using the affinity flat membrane module, the elution chromatography of human serum albumin (HSA) was performed to determine the optimum condition of eluent buffer. The optimum condition of eluent was the universal buffer solution of 0.06 M concentration containing 1 M KCl at pH 10. For the frontal chromatography of HSA using the flat module, the dynamic protein binding capacity was rapidly decreased from the equilibrium values with increasing flow rate and HSA concentration of the loading solution. However, in the case of hollow-fiber module, the dynamic binding capacity was maintained an equilibrium value without depending on the operating conditions. These results showed that the hollow-fiber module was more effective than the flat module as an affinity chromatography column.

  • Transparent conducting indium tin oxide (ITO) films were deposited onto the Polyethersulfone (PES) substrate by using a magnetron sputter type negative metal ion source. In order to investigate the influence of cesium (Cs) partial pressure during deposition and annealing temperature on the optoelectrical properties of ITO/PES film the films were deposited under different Cs partial pressures and post deposition annealed under different annealing temperature from $100^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ for 20 min at $3\;{\times}\;10^{-1}$ Pa. Optoeleetrical properties of ITO films deposited without intentional substrate heating was influenced strongly by the Cs partial pressure and the Cs partial pressure of $1.5\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ Pa was characterized as an optimal Cs flow condition. By increasing post-deposition vacuum annealing temperature both optical transmission in visible light region and electrical conductivity of ITO films were increased. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) micrographs showed that the surface roughness also varied with post-deposition vacuum annealing temperature.

  • Three methods for VOCs emissions control in indoor air are reduction at the source, ventilation between indoor and outdoor, and removal. The best alternative should be to replace highly emitting sources with sources having low emissions, but the pertinent information on VOCs is not always available from manufactures. Other ways of improving indoor air quality are needed. It is to increase the outside fresh-air flow to dilute the pollutants, but this method would generally provide only a dilution effect without destruction in residence. An ideal alternative to existing technologies would be a chemical oxidation process able to treat large volumes of slightly contaminated air at normal temperature without additional oxidant such as ozone generator and ion generator. Photocatalytic oxidation(PCO) represents such a process. It is characterized by a surface reaction assisted by light radiation inducing the formation of superoxide, hydroperoxide anions, or hydroxyl radicals, which are powerful oxidants. In comparison with other VOCs removal methods, PCO offers several advantages. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibilities for photocatalytic purification of slightly contaminated indoor air by using visible light such as flurescent visible light(FVL). In this study, a PCO of relatively concentrated benzene using common FVL lamps was investigated as batch type and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) using a common FVL lamp and penetrated sun light over window. The results of this study shown the possibility of TiO$_2$ photocatalyst application in the area of indoor air quality control.

  • The properties of AlTiN films by a cathodic arc deposition process have been studied. Oblique angle deposition has been applied to deposit AlTiN films. AlTiN films have been deposited on stainless steel (SUS304) and cemented carbide (WC) at a substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. AlTiN films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, glow-discharge light spectroscopy, micro-vickers hardness, and nanoindenter. When applying a current of 50 A to the cathodic arc source, it showed that the density of macroparticle of AlTiN films was 5 lower than other deposition conditions. With the increase of the bias voltage applied to the substrate up to -150 V, the density of macroparticle was decreased. The change of the $N_2$ flow rate during coating process made no influence on the film properties. For the multi-layered films, the film prepared at oblique angle of $60^{\circ}$ showed the highest hardness of 28 GPa and $H^3/E^2$ index of 0.18. AlTiN films have been shown a good oxidation resistance up to $800^{\circ}C$.
